Trump's Photo Op at St. John's - Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde speaks out

Did you see Trump slink and defeat-hover around after reporters asked him questions during the photo op? He just sorta bumbled around like he wanted to answer but couldnt thinnk of anything. And just sorta slowly walked off. It looked super odd.

"Sir, is that your Bible?"
"It's a Bible."

It was one of most awkward moments in a presidency filled with awkward moments during the most awkward photo op I've ever seen.

I don't think there's anything Trump can do or not do that wouldn't unleash a barrage of insults and accusations. Nobody really knows what he was thinking when he went to the church, despite all the cynical speculation. Personally, I think he just wanted to show the country that the church was still standing, but who knows?? Talk about a horrible job!! Every little dinky thing he does is analyzed ad nauseum with all kinds of vile speculation as to his motives. Who cares why he went there?? I wish people would focus more on policies, and less on speculative drivel. If people focused on his policies, they could make a coherent argument why he should or shouldn't be reelected. Thanks!!

And showing the church was still standing required using police brutality against peaceful protestors?

Post the video evidence of peaceful protesters being shot and gassed. I'd like to join you in denouncing such behavior.

There you go my friend. Plenty of other sources out there if you don't like this one.

The thing that tipped him over the edge was the viral hashtag #BunkerBitch. People on Twitter picked it up fast and spread it like wildfire. That roasted Trump's ass particularly after he and Fox had been repeating the 'Joe Biden 'hiding in his basement' lie for weeks. He had to make some kind of public display and all he did was inflame Christians everywhere and just returned back to the safety of his bunker afterwards.

The hashtag has even been turned into cute t-shirts and the term is still trending on Twitter.

100% what that photo op was for.

I would suggest that much of what you are seeing now with rubber bullets and tear gas involves PRESERVING freedom, not limiting it.

What does Orange Hitler's bootheel taste like?

100% what that photo op was for.

Absolutely. The hashtag got under his skin. There's one thing Trump can't take and that's being mocked. We witnessed that at the White House Correspondent Dinner in 2011 when President Obama mocked him and he was right there, but the annual press dinner is always a roast. Everyone has taken turns at being mocked at the WH press dinner. But Trump's fragile ego couldn't accept it, and Barack Obama became enemy #1 to him on that night. Trump is lethally vindictive and by that I mean he would set fire to this entire country to 'get even'.

Uh, it's not police brutality if people won't get out of the way on a thoroughfare. If they won't get the heck out of the way, then those whose job it is to enforce civility have to take some rather strong measures to move them out of the way. For example, if a bunch of people didn't like you and were blocking the entry to your business or your home or even your church so you couldn't have access, would you prefer the police do nothing to help you?? Look, protesters can protest legally, but there shouldn't be an assumption that if they block access or traffic, even foot traffic, that that's simply their privilege, while the people they're blocking have no rights. It doesn't work that way!!

Someone should have really thrown him a hard question like 'Any idea who wrote that Bible?'

I didn't see any "peaceful" protesters, just the ones who refused to disperse.

Feel free to show video of peaceful protesters sitting in a circle singing love songs and cuddling with stuffed bears.

Lafayette Park is not a "thoroughfare". Your post fails on its very first sentence. The rest can thus be summarily dismissed without comment.

Hmmmm…

1. The President does not need anyone's permission to do what he did.

Incorrect on two counts. First, St. John's Episcopal Church and it’s grounds are not public property and he had no permission from the Diocese to be there. The Bishop made abundantly clear that he would not have been given that permission. He was trespassing. Second, the Constitution doesn’t place any qualifiers on the right to peacefully assemble. He violated the Constitutional rights of peaceful protestors to trespass for a photo op.

So if Obama had ordered DC police to have Tea Party protesters arbitrarily dispersed so he could have a photo-op, then the police used rubber bullets and tear gas on them, you would have supported Obama?

How surprising, you’ve shifted the goalposts. Better luck next time buddy.

And as we learned from Ahmaud Arbery's case, if someone is trespassing, the Right believes they can be executed without trial. Too bad we didn't have three bubbas in a truck with shotguns to chase Trump.

Such a clumsy display for the base. Trump is such a one trick pony. He could have reached wide. Instead Bunker B!tch gets up and talks tough for the cameras, teargases peaceful demonstrators before the curfew started, kicked a priest out of a church so he could stand in front of it and do a photo op waving a bible and appealing to white evangelical identity politics: "Look at this, you-know-who broke a church window, but we'll set the dogs on them."

He's a bum and a fake.

There was something different about Obama. Can't put my finger on it.

Perhaps you need to look up the definition of a thoroughfare. It is a "a road or path forming a route between two places." My use of the word thoroughfare was deliberate. The park is a public place that by it's public establishment denotes the reasonable assumption that it is legal to move from point A to point B unhindered. I certainly would not expect you to comment on the rest of my post. Thanks!!

Hmmmm…

1. The President does not need anyone's permission to do what he did.

2. Like any other American, he retains the right to express his opinions and views.

3. The President made reasonable comments condemning the damages to the church, other national monuments, and the city in general.

4. The Bishop also has the right to express an opinion.

This is still America folks; non-violent freedom of expression is how things are, and should remain.

The reader is also free to express theirs.
For now, Trump isn’t just any American, he is our president and his words matter far more than any other American. He is very aware of that fact, and has used the power of the mic to create/increase divisions among Americans for his entire time in office.

And Trump moving from point a to point b requires rubber bullets and tear gas?

Thank you for confirming he's a brutal dictator because brutal dictators require shooting their own citizens to move around.

The only thing the incident proves is that sometimes God runs out of or can’t find his thunderbolts. I can imagine him fumbling in his heavenly closet trying to remember where he stashed them. Else Trump would be crispy bacon.
