Journalists covering US George Floyd protests find themselves under attack | South China Morning Post

There have been reports of several journalists being seriously injured in the growing unrest across the US following the death of an unarmed black man

Journalists covering nationwide protests over the death of a black man at police hands in Minneapolis have found themselves under attack, by police and at times by protesters.
The arrest and handcuffing Friday of a black CNN journalist by police in Minneapolis – even as he was reporting live on camera following the death of George Floyd – may have drawn the widest coverage.

The journalist, Omar Jimenez, was released an hour later after the Minnesota governor personally intervened.

But there have been several other serious incidents across the country, notably in Louisville, Kentucky, where a riot-squad policeman fired what appeared to be pepper spray pellets at a local TV crew filming the scene.

When they start attacking the press, you know that a) they're scared and b) they've trying to hide from them.

I don't think cops like reporters much.

The revolution will not be televised.

Part of the problem is the imposition of "curfews" which makes (nearly?) anyone (in public?) instantly become a 'criminal' based (only?) on the time of day. It is unclear who (if anyone) is exempt from a "curfew".

Considering about the only time that cops get any kind of accountability for their actions is when they are caught on camera doing something bad, is it a surprise that they don't like cameras?

It is a risk reporters take when they place themselves in a tense situation. Do reporters expect to not be injured when covering events in an active war zone. Then they should not be surprised they may get injured when covering a protest march that turns into a riot.

They should expect that the cops will specifically target them for being reporters?

It is a trade-off. Without the footage making the news, protests don't last long. They long for the attention.

If that is the case it's the cops trying to fan the flames then.

Is that a bait response?

No, an honest question. We've had media both shot at with pepper pellets and another group arrested. Should they expect violence from police officers for being media?

It's the accumulation of 30 years of RW rhetoric against the media with Trump's war on the media acting as the cherry on top.
Cops see the media as the enemy because they are out of line.

No more than other people were hit with pepper pellets.

Let me ask you, Does the press have the right to ignore lawful commands by LEO's? Yes or No

They should hose people down with honey. There is nothing that puts a damper on the party like being covered in sticky.

No.

Were they ignoring lawful commands by LEOs at the time they were shot with pepper pellets or arrested? Have you seen the videos?

As I said, reporters sometimes put themselves at risk sometimes for a story.

S**t happens. I will give you that is possible that on a case by case basis one LEO may have purposely peppered pellet a reporter. It is also possible the LEO was randomly shooting pellets at a random pattern.

imo, LEO's do not normally go after the press.

I’ve seen two sets of reporters attacked by police. It didn’t appear either time that the attacks were in any way warranted. You say, “**** happens”. I think more of our 1st Amendment rights than you do, apparently.

Normally they don't, but some departments are deliberately targeting reporters during these protests.

Funny last statement when you do not know me.

Without details and follow up investigations your statement of "attack" could be misleading. So what was happening around the reporter at the time? Was it clear to the LEO that the person was a reporter? What did the LEO do to "attack" the reporter?

You really just don’t care, do you?
You keep making assumption after assumption. I challenge you to watch the videos and see for yourself. But even if you finally do, “**** happens”, right?

Riots happen and reporters go running towards them while some people hunker in the bunker.

First vid. Looks like the LEO/NG were clearing the street. The reporter was not getting out the area fast enough.

Second vid: The LEO may have shot the pellets directly at the reporter and cameral crew. Once again, they were in a area that the police were trying to move people out.

The reporter and crew take a risk to get that close to the action.

I did watch. Did you?

/sarcasm on
Yea, you got me. I don't care about reporters. Especially all they care about is the story.
/sarcasm off

These riots aren't some spontaneous outburst to the Floyd case, except, perhaps, for a part of the initial Minneapolis protest. This is organized leftwing agitation designed to sow chaos throughout society, drive a further wedge between the races, widen the political divide and, ultimately, further hurt Trump. That we are seeing Antifa makes this perfectly clear.

You can rest assured that Soros and his filthy minions are pulling the strings behind most of this. It is also beyond surreal that people can openly loot in broad daylight often uncontested by police while we've witnessed law abiding Americans fined or arrested for daring to open their businesses or attend church. If people want this to be the new normal, then, by all means, vote Democrat.

It was targeted at the reporters. The streets were clear in the first case and they continued to target the reporter and the cameraman while ignoring the milk drinking dip**** trying to antagonize them. Watch until the end. The reporter is shot again even though he and his team had already retreated a block away.

In the second case, the reporter was already behind the line delineated by the police. She and her crew were targeted.
