George Floyd protests: clashes near the White House as America’s turmoil deepens | South China Morning Post

Mayor of Washington mayor extends curfew for two nights after a fiery Sunday

More than 30 other US cities have also imposed curfews; more than 4,000 people arrested nationwide over the weekend

Protests that escalated across the US since the death last week of George Floyd, an unarmed black Minnesota man who died after being pinned at the neck by police, spread over the weekend to Washington, where businesses in the nation’s capital were boarded up and some of the country’s most revered monuments were defaced.

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a curfew for the city on Sunday night, following similar moves in more than 30 other major US cities over the weekend, but the move did not prevent break-ins and looting.

On Monday, Bowser extended curfews for the capital for Monday and Tuesday nights, to start at 7pm and extending to the following 6am.
Chief of Police Peter Newsham said that the city’s Metropolitan Police Department had arrested 17 people on Saturday night alone and that 11 officers were injured during the protests. More than 60 US Secret Service personnel were injured from Friday night through Sunday morning near the White House, according to a statement by the service.

The Ship of State has lost its rudder & Trump is at the helm, powerless to do anything about it.

Biden is the Great Black Hope. Why isn't he stopping the looting?

The country is facing two crises, covid and rioting. What are Trumps responsibilities re. these issues?
Serious question. People are telling me how he has none, but that can't be right.

I don't know. What were Obama's responsibilities when it came to the Ferguson riots? If the dems couldn't fix it, what suddenly makes you think Trump could have?

I personally think that the two issues are related. People are projecting their resentment regarding covid bunkering onto the police, each other, etc.

I suppose Trump could have tried holding a beer summit but I doubt it would work. These waves of unrest, however, are state and local issues to deal with. They will spread like cancer. Big city mayors will order curfews so people will pack up the cars and go to other cities and start crap because of their irresistible impulse to RESIST!!!!!! I personally think that every single person participating in an unpermitted demonstration in which someone is injured should be arrested and be held civilly liable for any damage done as well.

Trump is lost. This is not what he wanted when he got elected.

he's done plenty for covid. he could be handling the riots a bit better, I will admit, as his tough talk is not really helping.. but I am not sure what else he could do... Is it within his jurisdiction to send in the armed forces to police the american people? do the governors have to declare martial law or ask him first? I thought that was a constitutional no no but I can't remember exactly.

if that is an option, that is something he could do. and may eventually have to.
