George Floyd protests: clashes near the White House as America’s turmoil deepens | South China Morning Post
Mayor of Washington mayor extends curfew for two nights after a fiery Sunday
More than 30 other US cities have also imposed curfews; more than 4,000 people arrested nationwide over the weekend
Protests that escalated across the US since the death last week of George Floyd, an unarmed black Minnesota man who died after being pinned at the neck by police, spread over the weekend to Washington, where businesses in the nation’s capital were boarded up and some of the country’s most revered monuments were defaced.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a curfew for the city on Sunday night, following similar moves in more than 30 other major US cities over the weekend, but the move did not prevent break-ins and looting.
On Monday, Bowser extended curfews for the capital for Monday and Tuesday nights, to start at 7pm and extending to the following 6am.
Chief of Police Peter Newsham said that the city’s Metropolitan Police Department had arrested 17 people on Saturday night alone and that 11 officers were injured during the protests. More than 60 US Secret Service personnel were injured from Friday night through Sunday morning near the White House, according to a statement by the service.

The Ship of State has lost its rudder & Trump is at the helm, powerless to do anything about it.
