Mr. Trump has presented himself as someone who seeks conflict, not conciliation, a fighter, not a peacemaker. And he has lived up to his self-image at a perilous time.

WASHINGTON — With a nation on edge, ravaged by disease, hammered by economic collapse, divided over lockdowns and even face masks and now convulsed once again by race, President Trump’s first instinct has been to look for someone to fight. Over the last week, America reeled from 100,000 pandemic deaths, 40 million people out of work and cities in flames over a brutal police killing of a subdued black man. But Mr. Trump was on the attack against China, the World Health Organization, Big Tech, former President Barack Obama, a cable television host and the mayor of a riot-torn city. While other presidents seek to cool the situation in tinderbox moments like this, Mr. Trump plays with matches. He roars into any melee he finds, encouraging street uprisings against public health measures advanced by his own government, hurling made-up murder charges against a critic, accusing his predecessor of unspecified crimes, vowing to crack down on a social media company that angered him and then seemingly threatening to meet violence with violence in Minneapolis.

As several cities erupted in street protests after the killing of George Floyd, some of them resulting in clashes with the police, Mr. Trump made no appeal for calm. Instead in a series of tweets and comments to reporters on Saturday, he blamed the unrest on Democrats, called on “Liberal Governors and Mayors” to get “MUCH tougher” on the crowds, threatened to intervene with “the unlimited power of our Military” and even suggested his own supporters mount a counter-demonstration. His suggestion that his own supporters should come to the White House on Saturday foreshadowed the possibility of a clash outside his own doors. “Tonight, I understand, is MAGA NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE???” he wrote on Twitter, using the acronym for his first campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” Mayor Muriel E. Bowser of Washington responded sharply on Saturday morning. she called the president a source of division. “While he hides behind his fence afraid/alone, I stand w/ people peacefully exercising their First Amendment Right after the murder of #GeorgeFloyd & hundreds of years of institutional racism,” she wrote. “There are no vicious dogs & ominous weapons. There is just a scared man. Afraid/alone …”

Trump is a common thug. Igniting racial fires in tweets and and then scurrying to hide behind his Secret Service.

It's no secret why his daddy paid off a podiatrist. Thug Trump is a warrior only when he has others to hide behind.

It will get worse as Trump has found the ENEMY top run against and will make the old cry of law and order his centerpiece in his reelection attempt. Trump was going to lose and perhaps lose big but now he has a fighting chance if he can paint the Democrats as weak and on the side of the protestors. There are enough stupid voters who just might fall for that.

This is not good.

There can be peaceful protesters, and there can be lawless rioters. They can exist simultaneously. We shouldn't commingle the two.

One thing no one can deny is that George Floyd was brutally murdered before our very eyes.

Many thought Trump was going to get the country into a war, they just didn’t think it would be in country........

This is what happens when the chaos candidate becomes the chaos president. He doesn't know any other way to act.

Trump is a common thug who must be thrust from office.

Yep. Agreed. In less than a week, Klobuchar's Veep's hopes were dashed and MN is now definitely at risk of going to Trump in November.

Bad Trump. He should step back and let them riot. After all they are just burning off steam. No need to arrest them. No need to show force. The rioting will stop when they run out of buildings to burn.

There will be resistance to any VP nominee with close ties to law enforcement, now. IMO.

Because Trump handled this situation so well? What did he do but insight more violence? A real President would have at least made a plea for peace. There are real grievances here that need to be addressed.

He called out for his supporters to show up and counter protest in front of the white house and not a single MAGAt showed up. Is he going to tweet LIBERATE the cities with curfews next, because he'll get the same turnout. Teabillies are posers. They're scared ****less of the riots.

Ah, good point!

So no Harris. No Whitmer. Wow! Both strong & good candidates, as was Amy.

Looks like Abram's lucked into the Veep spot she's been lobbying for.

He asked them to riot. Instead of addressing their grievances and pleading for peace like a real President he took the Trump way and made threats instead. He's a coward and a moron.

Val Demings’s (sp?) also?

Regardless, those on-the-fence suburban MN women that will likely determine the election are watching what's going-on in the city with fear for it coming to them & their children. A strong law & order President calling-out that the Dem Mayor & Dem Governor are weak, may have some appeal to them.

I have always thought Warren was the best choice. If Obama can't bring out the black vote nobody can.

Many thought Trump was going to get the country into a war, they just didn’t think it would be in country........

That was his and his supporters goal from the beginning.

So rather than an A.G., you suggest a big-city police chief?

No, I’m thinking she is out, as well. Because Orlando.

Yet one of the millions of ignorant leftist post we see every day over and over. The only people fanning flames is you.

Leftist are the most racist people to ever congregate in this country.

Argh. Yeah, forgot Warren. Thanks for the reminder.

She would do well with the Bernie babies. And yeah, your point with Obama is valid. With all the horror around us, this may have been Warren's lucky week.

Ah, okay. But you never know? An A-A women police chief from a big city? She could run on solving the issue. It just might work. 'Cuz if she can draw the young people we see in the streets, that might toss the election Dem.

Hah! Yeah, I saw that. None showed up. I was blown away. I'm wondering if they maybe didn't understand the vague reference, maybe?
