Trump expected to sign executive order that could threaten punishment against Facebook, Google and Twitter over allegations of political bias

President Trump is preparing to sign an executive order Thursday that could roll back the immunity that tech giants have for the content on their sites, according to two people familiar with the matter. Trump’s directive chiefly seeks to embolden federal regulators to rethink a portion of law known as Section 230, according to the two people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a document that could still evolve and has not been officially signed by the president. That law spares tech companies from being held liable for the comments, videos and other content posted by users on their platforms. The order would prompt federal officials to open a proceeding to reconsider the scope of the law, the people familiar with the document said. A change could mean potentially dramatic free-speech implications and wide-ranging consequences for a broad swath of companies reliant on doing business on the Internet. The order will mark the White House’s most significant salvo against Silicon Valley after years of verbal broadsides and regulatory threats from Trump and his top deputies. The White House declined to comment.

In a nutshell ... Trump is again aggrieved that internet social media companies aren't Rush Limbaugh clones carrying the far-right's water.

I doubt Trump will go forward. This is most likely another Trumpian diversion away from the 102,000 COVID deaths in the US and Trump's culpability in this.

This thread title is a great example of the left's mendacity. Everything they say is not only false, but a direct inversion of the truth.

Yikes! In this case, accurate.

Hmm... it is unknown what the EO will eventually say, yet it is surely going to be evil because Trump.

What an asinine comment, why do you constantly play the victim card? I've read your posts, you know better.

It will be "evil" if it restricts free speech. We know what Trump is upset about, he's been whinging about it for days, so people can reasonably expect some sort of speech restrictions to be in the EO, ones that will make Trump happy. WTF else should we expect it to be about, swimming between the hours of 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM? Or is Trump just trying to deflect and distract from his complete failure regarding the Covid-19 epidemic?

Our president's feelings are hurt.

What an asinine comment. It will be "evil" if it restricts free speech. Or is he just making up a meaningless EO to excite his base? That's not "evil", but would fall into the "ignorant" category.

Why not wait (up to a day?) and see what the EO (if issued) actually says?

Someone else posted a link to it on these threads. All it basically does is remove federal shielding of social media from civil lawsuits. The government can't censor anything, but this way Trump can try to sue Twitter for fact checking him.

What's wrong with demanding that social media get their facts straight when the fact check?

I think they've already spoken to some who said it would be to take away section 230, or the right not to be sued for their users opinions, which will incentivize them to heavily moderate speech.
And also have some official WH complaint forum, like the telephone spam one, we all know how well that one worked (not much), but yeah, I could see them selectively choosing complaints to go after.

So, whining and retaliation, more censoring of freedom of speech, Republicans? Trump? Fascism? Check... check..check..check...

That only counts if Hillary or Obama did this.

You see, ordinarily I'd consider someone who not only "liked" but praised a post as stupidly dishonest as AmNat's "I hate librulz" swill to be someone on the more rabid sections of the right. But Joe here, he is "Slightly Liberal". So am I. Clearly, I should treat his post as if it were credible and consider how mendacious I must be by virtue of being on "the left," the target of AmNat's bile.

I'll under understand why anyone would actually expect choice of an obviously misleading lean to boost stupid, dishonest, and/or hateful statements about everyone else with that lean into some kind of credibility.

The title is completely accurate. Anyone who educated themselves about this knows:
- Trump has constantly railed against any media that leans-left
- Twitter finally started putting a fact check on Trump's constant lies via twitter.
- That Twitter is thus engaged in political speech, the core of the First Amendment.
- That based on the content of its speech, Trump threatened "big action" to target it.
- That the EO is that big action.
- That the EO is an attempt to prod the FCC & FTC to change their interpretation of law so as to remove protections from social media companies and expose them to lawsuits and the like.
- That if that happens, other right wing/Trumpist organizations will try to SLAPP-suit any media with perceived left-lean views out of existence.

But hey, Joe is "Slightly Liberal" too - - so listen to his praise of AmNat's dishonest bile as if it is credible.

I bet this is the kind of moronic lie Joe likes as well.

Clue: Twitter engaged in political speech to get Trump's facts straight, and Trump responded by threatening a "big action" against them, then told his people to come up with something that might punish Twitter and other social media in some way.

Now I'm confused.

GhostlyJoe called that post "accurate" and liked it.

And you liked GhostlyJoe's post. Yet your post shows you understand what is going on here; that Trump is trying to lay the groundwork for punishing social media companies that don't sing his tune (or having other Trumpists do it for him via endless lawsuits against those companies). Why would you like a post approving of another post that called "the left" mendacious, claims everything they say is "not only false, but a direct inversion of the truth", especially based on this OP?

The OP and title are accurate.

The OP is BS, dude. Sorry. Please consult my long post history and we can discuss my lean further.

At some point, you may have to accept that your anger is why you're seeing red everywhere you look.

He is a national embarrassment, a d hands down the most corrupt persoy to ever inhabit the Whitehouse...

Seriously, the issues with code 203 are longstanding. Just because this is your first exposure to these issues doesn't mean they don't predate your interest.

I interpreted it as what they say is FALSE, and his reply was (No) in this case it was (accurate)... no big deal.
in this case, what they say is accurate...

I don't sit there and gloss over who likes what. I don't have a lot of history of users opinions here. I just look at individual posts and decide. In this case, the intention of the post(s) slipped past me. corrected.

you really think nitpicking over this is helping your stance?

He liked the post reading "This thread title is a great example of the left's mendacity. Everything they say is not only false, but a direct inversion of the truth." Then he posted that that statement was "accurate."

One doesn't like a post and say that it is accurate if one is trying to disagree with it.

So. Your argument is that they were not correct in their fact checking about Joe Scarborough not killing his intern?
Interesting. Why haven't you arrested him for muder-one there Danno?

Why is it that you have to resort to personal attacks so often? You're seldom able to address the point, so you have to attack people with irrelevant ad hominems ("you're a racist", "you're not a real liberal", etc.).

Because that is not an "ad hom" aimed at the entirety of "the left", which includes me?

:lamo

PS: Please do quote (and then report) a post where I said "you're a racist". You put it in quotes, so you need to find the exact phrase, not something you claim adds up to it. Go on. Find me posting that. And then, because it would probably be against the rules, report it to boot. Go on.

Or were you lying like always?

This is either the biggest case of sand in the Va-jay-jay.
Or maybe it is just a galactic stage of butt-hurtery.

he's such a punk.

all this crap is gonna come back to haunt Republicans. Trump has made so many horrible things normal now. there is no going back.
