Twitter has fact checked one of Trump's tweets and Trump is not happy at all. He calls it a political move and violates his right to free speech. Of course so far twitter hasn't actually removed Trump's tweets, but seem to have begun to place fact checks on the. First, does this violate Trump's right to free speech and second should twitter even be fact checking Trump's tweets?

Who fact checks Twitter?

No it doesn't violate Trumps free speech.

If Twitter fact checks tweets as part of it's standard practice Trunp should be no exception. If Twitter picks and chooses who they will fact check. Then IMO they open themselves up to deserved criticism for that practice.

So, Trump accuses Twitter of stifling free speech and then says he won't allow that to happen?

Way to advertise that you don't know (or care) about the what the Constitution actually says and what a president's rights and responsibilities are, Mr. Dumb-as-a-box-of-rocks Trump.

You know damned well that if any one of us accused some famous person of committing murder, the FBI would be tapping into our personal conversations online and already have a perp sheet started on us. Why should Trump be any different or get more privileges allowing him to threaten people and accuse people of murder than any one of us?

1: Twitter did not violate Trump's free speech.
2: Twitter did not fact check Trump, but included a link to fact checks.

Do you believe that people in power should blatantly lie on a communication platform that is owned by a company?

Do you value the truth, or do you just want lies and propaganda?

Yeah.

To be fair, Twitter said Trump's comments were "unsubstantiated"

Unsubstantiated can mean something as simple as a comment hasn't been properly sourced.
It doesn't have to mean the comment is a fabrication
or even that the comment is incorrect.

The comments are merely "unsubstantiated"

Twitter is not party of the US government and he is not being fined or arrested for his speech so Twitter removing them is not a free speech violation. I would have hoped that the POTUS would be aware of the basic concepts of the First Amendment.

Twitter should fact check them for accuracy.

I think it is very different when you are the president and your words have such meaning and power for the country. I do not care if they fact check you or me as really, who cares. The president is very different, wouldn't you agree?

I would agree it would be better to have a president who doesn't play so fast and loose with facts. I don't necessarily belive it is up to Twitter to provide a fact verifying service concerning legitimacy of what people post. To me that is something everyone should do on their own. However, if they feel that fact checking is a needed service then I would say they should have some clear guidelines of who or what information is subject to such a fact checking.

If they are not open on what criteria gets checked and don't apply that standard to all who would qualify then i think they deserve any criticism for doing so.

At this point, Trump is a monster partially of Twitter's own creation. If they want to do this, then they can. It's their platform, so there should be no issue with them choosing to do with it whatever they want. Despite how idiotic it is to "fact check" someone's opinion.

However, these choices are very transparent and can easily be seen as ones being taken for political reasons. So at this point they're inviting reprisal, no matter what it is that they choose to do.

There is a difference between tweeting opinion and writing as if they are facts. Trump is very careful not to step over the line into an area where he could be sued. He puts his toes on the very line though.

Given that his post is an opinion, I doubt that your designation would actually cut it. Besides, we've had enough post on this site and on twitter against the man. Saying that he's some sort of childish buffoon that can't even wipe his ass correctly.

Yet now he's somehow smart enough to play word games with the top moderators of twitter?
You do realize that they linked to other opinions, just to fact check his opinion, correct?

This bias on twitter has always been well known and it's been catching up with them, day in and day out. Hell, the man who makes these arbitrary rules for them is incredibly biased against Trump. His own thread reads like hate mail at some times, directly targeting the president, his administration and even personally attacking his family.

If I had his job, I would not be posting anything remotely political at all.

It doesn't do either but it could cost twitter its immunity from liability for posted content once they start exercising any dominion over what is being posted within the existing terms of service.

Well first, I think they CAN do whatever they want. Its their site. If anyone doesnt like how they run their site, then complain, accept it, or quit. I did because of censorship like this and because 99% of the site is bots, spam, and assholes. There is no right to free speech on a private website.

And second, they arent fact checking. Theyre adding links to competing opinions. The tweet in question was clearly an opinion, and twitter added links to it which point to liberal media which offer their own take on his opinion. No, I dont think they SHOULD do this because its clearly biased, not factual, and bad for business.

Furthermore, its unnecessary. I guarantee you that every tweet Trump posts there's 10,000 responses opposing it, and then the media spends hours opposing it on TV. So whos is this even aimed at? Do they think there is someone that beleives everything Trump says thats going to have their mind changed by a link to CNN?

On the one hand, he as a public person should be responsible for what he publishes. On the other hand, we are proud of our freedom of speech, right?

Of course, but freedom of speech refers to govt censorship, not private censorship. If twitter or its community want to control Trump, they are free to do so, even if its dumb to do so and biased. Personally If I ran it, I would have kicked him off a long time ago for being a jerk.

However, it doesnt mean twitter isnt also in the wrong for their dishonesty in denying their bias. They should just admit theyre biased against conservatives.
