What if Trump accused YOU of murder?

Twitter has immense power because it showcases peoples' comments.

Absolutely. I don't want -- or need -- the constant demand on my awareness that a Twitter account entails. Too intrusive for this introvert.
But it amazes me to see someone in the US unaware how truly powerful social media has become.
We have a POTUS in Trump who chooses to go months without a press conference. Because he can control the media discussion with his Tweets
at 2 am. Trump is a master at manipulating the media and he uses his Twitter account like a master--to attack his enemies and to throw folks under the bus and to feed his base red meat.

iwf, you eloquently state my own belief. I posed a question in order to hear the views of others, and also because I attempt even in these dire times to remain an optimist about human nature.

If we look at the American response to World War Two, I saw the faith in our "common bond" weaken by the time we became embroiled in the Vietnam War 30 years later.
In 1942, Americans pulled together in our global military actions sharing years of hardships with a common goal.
In 1972, we were split between those who preached "My country right or wrong." and those who responded "Hell no, I won't go!"

Today, in 2020, you state, "When you become utterly convinced that the other side is out to destroy your very way of life, you will vote for the lowest common denominator if they promise to fight your battle for you."
I hope you will expand on that statement...

Conservative Trump supporters tell us all the time on these boards why they support Trump. I think we often dismiss their complaints as exaggerated hyperbole, but I don't think it is. They are absolutely convinced that "liberal democrats" are out to destroy their way of life and their beloved traditions. They are coming for their guns, their religion, and their freedom. They have embraced civil disobedience against an oppressive government that can't be trusted to defend their right to live the way they want, and the GOP in general and Trump in particular have painted themselves as taking the fight to the "deep state" liberals on their behalf.

I often compare Donald Trump to a horribly behaved German Shepherd and his supporters to his owners in what they believe is an extremely dangerous neighborhood full of "criminal minorities." If you believe that your dog is the only thing standing between you and a home invasion, and if you don't think you will be able to get another dog if you get rid of him, you will put up with any amount of furniture eating, television destroying, and bed pissing if it means feeling safe from your hated neighbors. And you will be damned if you admit to these neighbors any of this bad behavior. You will deny through your teeth that there is anything wrong with your dog even as you bandage up your bitten arm.

This is the world of most Trump supporters and many conservatives. They believe that liberals want to give all their jobs to foreigners, take away their right to defend themselves, and outlaw their religion. Why wouldn't they support a president who promises to build a wall around their house to keep out the rest of the world?

And if your goal is to sow division in America, why wouldn't you capitalize on this fear and fan the flames?

I'd politely retort that he may stick it up his azz.

How true mon ami.

This isn't Twitter. This is the President of the United States doing this.

Whether using his smart phone on the toilet or saying this at a lectern, the effect is 100% the same.

He is pushing a conspiracy with no merit to satisfy some beef with a morning talk show host without care as to who is harmed in the process.

We used to consider that to be a bad thing in this county.

Most Americans still do think it's a very bad thing in this country, hopefully in November they will do the right thing and make sure the traitor in the white house gets kicked to the curb.

So you don't have any defense of Trump's unhinged actions? Just another diatribe about the unfair bad media people who hate The Donald?

Isn't this the exact same thing with the media that murderous dictators do in their countries, and the citizens blindly believe that only the dictator himself knows what's best for them? The dictator tells them that he only speaks the truth, and bans any other form of outside news that may say otherwise?

Their brainwashed victims will defend them and bash the outside media also. Never did think I would see so many spineless people falling for this right here in America. Kiss America and our Democracy goodbye if there's four more years of lies and destruction by this president.

It's actually the whole of the world's media except conservative media.

American conservative media consumers have a recent history distinct from the consensus reality of the rest of the world.

A recent history that changes as necessary to cover trump's ass.

Very "1984" tbh.

Funny stuff.... you moan about baseless lies when it's the MSM that bombards
the Trump administration 7/24 with completely baseless lies and false accusations.

NYT, CNN, NBC, MSNBC, WP, YAHOO NEWS, and the list goes on and on!

I mean at some point you have to ask, is it really absolutely everyone else...or is it Trump?

Very true and well said! Like professional trolls and bots, Trump uses social media to gaslight the public and manipulate the weak uninformed masses....like his supporters. They are drunk on KoolAid and bloated on red meat.

I love your analogy. Yours is the single most expressive -- and I think accurate -- reasoning for the Trump supporters who I personally know.
I have attempted to understand why these folks who I have known in some cases for decades support Trump.
This group includes good friends who we've raised kids together, family members we've celebrated holidays with, and decent church friends who would help us in a flash.

I have been perplexed. Why do these folks defend Trump so vehemently?
I had boiled down their rationale for Trump support to angry resentment, or fear from threat, or a combination of both emotions.
Your logic that many folks feel threatened, and fearful makes sense. And when any of us denigrate Trump -- their choice "protector" -- we see their anger because we
threaten their champion.

How do the Dems look right now in your state?

Oh boy, a "moderate"/"centrist" is at it again. Because (in these people's minds) they're not political one bit. OH NO, they're SOOOOOO down the middle, and fair, and YOU can't question them because they're so apolitical. And it's obvious that they're right, I mean, c'mon, they're only quoting anti-Tru- err I mean, uh, VERY INTELLECTUAL AND FAIR SOURCES OF NEWS. Sure they might support Left wing causes, legislation, and special interest groups, and sure they may have endorsed Left wing candidates, and sure they may have told a little, tiny (major) fibs about some (important) things (especially about this accusation on Trump), but DARN IT they're so balanced and so fair. They're just opinionated is all, but NO ONE (except for Leftists) ARE ALLOWED TO QUESTION THEM (even if over 95% of the things about Trump they drone on about are incorrect).

The other and possibly most common motive for a supporter's seething defense of indefensible Trump behavior is the simple fact that they went on record supporting his candidacy. To attack Trump is to attack their judgment. Most people are willing to go through some astonishing mental gymnastics in order to avoid publicly admitting they made a foolish choice. And the more people who know about the choice, say on social media, and the more foolish the choice appears to be, the higher the stakes to convince everyone that it was actually a good one if only they were smart enough to see why. It's easier to pretend to have been smarter than everyone else than to admit that everyone else might have been smarter than you in a particular case.

I have watched our elected presidents and both parties fairly closely since the nominating conventions were broadcast in black n' white.

I have only been fearful of the overall direction of our federal government while watching Nixon's criminal activity unearthed and now.
Our political choices in 2020 are more profound than our preferences for either Trump's policies or Biden's policies.

In my lifetime I have never before seen such a blatant attempt by one of our two political parties to do whatever it takes to maintain its power.
The Republican Party has helped Trump circumvent the constitutional separation between the Legislative Branch and the Executive Branch by ignoring the Senate's role.
It is sad to see the GOP stumble into the Tea Party's anti-government dysfunction and then morph into a Trump Cult (if you can't beat him, join him!).

Now the Justice Department has become Trump's watchdog as he fires all Inspector Generals who sniff too close to the Trump Inner Sanctum, including Pompeo.
This election requires Democrats to rescue our democracy. Because Trump wants more unrestricted control and less interference with his "agenda".

True. I agree once again. The same is true with dedication to other major personal life choices.
Like sports teams, or investment. Life is humbling. But only if we can admit some of our failures or shortcomings.

Back when Gore ran vs GW Bush, I was pissed at Clinton and switched parties. I failed to take a close look at the former Texas governor and was I surprised
when he invaded Iraq. I have found very few lifelong Republicans willing to admit that our invasion of Iraq was a mistake.
It is a pity to look at the bloodshed and the subsequent destruction of that nation's economy and realize that it happened because The White House sold America on
the existence of WMDs. A flat lie that was delivered at the UN by one of our most respected military leaders.

American partisanship could use a healthy dose of humility. Making room for differing ideas and goals is good, but political polarization tends to come full circle to the point where we start to make less room for our differences, not more. Both sides need to be careful not to go down that road.

Hey, Herkamer63, you can believe all the BS that Trump pollutes the world with--including this crap that was debunked back in 2001--but please don't make assumptions about me.
To do so is ignorant. I don't hide my POV, my politics, or slant my commentary. I am not hiding the fact that I work to dethrone this sad excuse for an American.

Since you have no clue about who I am, you simply take aim at my "fairness" because I point out that POTUS is a lying bag of excrement. That's on you, Charles. Enjoy your cult!

No. We just are not stupid like those who believe the guy who lied to them over 15,000 times.

It would be interesting to see what trump would do and where he would go if Jack Dorsey banned him from twitter.

I began writing a novel that at its core dealt with the tribal camps the US has walled ourselves into and the war between these two tribes.
Both major parties want power. Both include individuals who love people, both include racists or folks who would make bad neighbors.
Both include those who are greedy or generous, or any other human quality from drug addicted to Godly in spirit.
But right now, at this very moment, I feel that there is no way I could support a Republican candidate.
Because the GOP has sold out to Trump's worldview. And that is not my a worldview I can condone or support.

Trump can accuse me of anything he wants. Everyone knows he's a moron. He's like a pathetic internet troll. He is a pathetic internet troll. I stand corrected, there's no "like". His words are meaningless and only reflect on his own sad state of affairs.

Would YOU ignore Trump's disturbed accusations if the president's tweets were about your own dead spouse?

Our president was at it again last week Tweeting 19-year old unfounded accusations in order to attack one of his critics.
Trump essentially accused Joe Scarborough of murdering his congressional aid who died after an accidental fall in 2001.
The dead woman's husband asked the ceo of Twitter to delete the Trump tweets, complaining that Trump's insensitive and baseless attack causes him and his family to relive the painful tragedy.
Meanwhile, good honest hard working people continually overlook these types of lies that Donald Trump uses in order to keep his followers angry.

6 times Trump has falsely accused his political opponents of crimes

Many Americans don't seem to care what Trump says in his vicious attacks that are often filled with baseless lies.
To his supporters attacking whoever Trump perceives as an enemy or threat is just playing "hardball".

However, I see Trump's lies and attacks as proof that we live in a truly Machiavellian time in which holding on to power at any and all means is paramount.
"Win at all costs!" is the mantra of the GOP even if it destroys belief in our institutions, undermines justice in our society, or causes people heartache.

This must be a rhetorical question, because I am assuming you're aware of the fact that Trump has rather successfully placed himself above the law.
So in point of fact, there isn't a damn thing anyone can do about his slander and libel, or even his defamation, not as long as he's still in office.

Do you know people you are close to who disagree with you and instead support Trump, or defend him?
