We have talked about Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Gretchen "Big Gretch" Whitmer, Tammy Duckworth and Stacey Abrams as potential picks for Joe Biden. But we haven't really talked about Val Demings. She recently told Dean Obeidallah, a comedian and radio host, that she made Biden's shortlist and would accept the position, if he asked her. When I look at the betting odds, she's now 4th on the list, behind Warren, Klobuchar and Harris.

What do you guys think of her?

Her only political experience is in congress, as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Florida for the last four years. She serves on homeland security subcommittees and was asked to be an impeachment manager against Donald Trump.

The case for Demings seems to be on the fact she's an African American woman and from the state of Florida.

I think she'd be a wise choice. Her performance at the impeachment hearing was spectacular.

If she can give Joe Biden the state of Florida in the election, I'm all for it.

Thats her redeeming qualities? Shes black? Nothing like a little identity politics

Yes, that’s an important consideration, of course. But I’m applying different standards to Biden’s veep pick than I am to Biden himself. Biden is just a means to an end: getting trump out of office. But I want the veep to be a strong leader. I’m not going to be thrilled with just anybody.

She's former law enforcement and she was excellent during the impeachment trial. Actually she's pretty excellent anytime they're grilling someone in the House. She's incredibly smart and tough and I wouldn't mind her as the VP pick at all.

To be clear, I have no problems with Val Demings. I just want something more than “she’ll deliver Florida” (not that that’s a bad thing).

Former law enforcement, former police chief (first woman in position). Not necessarily the best qualifications, but better than some of the alternatives (e.g., Stacy Abrams).

I agree, she would be a good choice and I was impressed by her at the impeachment hearing also.

Yeah, Abrams is going to need to cut her teeth on something a little more than the general assembly. She definitely should have been governor, but the Presidency is flying a bit close to the sun if you ask me.

Maybe he should follow the repugs lead like with Sarah Palin, white, dumb, slutty and f***able according to the repug horndogs.

Delivering Florida wouldn't be a bad thing but that's a tough ask even for Val Demings but I don't think you need much more out of your VP than someone tough who's going to take arrows for you while throwing some blows of their own. I think a Demings vs Pence match up goes horribly for the GOP and I think it gives a smart and impressive black woman some really good political capital and name recognition.

I definitely agree on the point about a Pence/Demings public debate (assuming there’ll be one). Pence is a lying piece of ****, but he’s cool under fire. Whoever debates him will need to be shrewd and just as cool under fire.

I think a law enforcement background is a plus dealing with Trump. And she has already shown us she's more than capable of sticking it to the orange baboon

If you had a clue what yesterday's Biden interview was actually about, you'd know the black community has receipts, and they want a black veep nominee. So yes, it is all about being black. Suck it up and get used to it.

Yeah, like his comment about if you don't vote for him, you ain't black? What an idiot.

Been getting used to it since 2016. Looking forward to getting more used to it in 2020.

So what you are admitting is, you can't get the vote with a real candidate so you need someone black to get the vote? Sad times for Democrats. lol

Maybe, but at least the don't have to race bait to get a vote. I guess when you have run out of candidates that can run on their record or intelligence, you need to find a black chic to get votes.

Sad times of the Democrat party.

Why are there only female names on that list of potential picks?

Biden's gaffe yesterday (technically Thursday) without a doubt increased the odds of picking a black woman. You want somebody who is going to excite your base and increase voter turnout, Demings is a pretty good option. You cannot really say she's "inexperienced". Grant it, she's never been a governor or a U.S Senator, but she's an incredibly popular congresswoman and lots of foreign policy/homeland security experience. She recently won re-elected unopposed.

You don't get it even when It's spelled out for you. Sad times indeed

I don't think you understand their point. It's about writing past wrongs and rewarding loyalty. Black Americans want to be represented better in our political system and believe, getting one of their own, would be the best way to achieve their goals. This is why Kamala Harris, Val Demings and Stacey Abrams have a good shot at VP spot.

Ask yourself these questions:

How many black Americans won either the Republican or Democrat nomination for President or Vice President?
How many of those black Americans actually won the presidency?

How many women won either the Republican or Democrat nomination for President or Vice President?
How many of those women actually won the presidency?

You see the problem?

She represents less than 5% of Florida’s population and has been in office less than 4 years. It is very unlikely that Demings has the following to give Biden FL.

Having said that, Biden could do worse than picking her.

There are no bigger race baiters than the members of the White Supremacists party. Just because your racist leaders ignore the needs of other communities doesn't mean they don't race bait. They rile ignorant white folk up every election.
