Trump wants to bankrupt the US Postal Service, so he can prevent mail-in voting and call for a delay in the election due to social distancing. He needs the extra time to get the economy stronger in order to bolster his chances of winning.

-- It appears that the post office may not survive the summer, as it faces twin threats of the Covid-19 pandemic and deeply misguided federal policy. The economic downturn has drained its finances, and in 2006, Congress forced the agency to pre-fund its pension and health care obligations 75 years in advance — a policy not applied to any other federal organization.

Worst of all, the current administration is focused on hastening its demise. President Trump, who on Friday called the Postal Service “a joke,” is essentially holding the agency hostage, refusing to approve emergency funding unless it raises its delivery rates, which analysts say could artificially inflate its prices.

The need for the post office to protect our democracy has never been greater. With Election Day approaching, public health experts are warning voters to avoid crowds and long lines. Americans should never have to risk their lives to vote. Thankfully, many states have robust absentee ballot systems in place that, once updated to meet the needs of today, can serve American voters in every community. And it will be the Postal Service that will deliver these ballots, acting as the engine of the democratic process.

Opponents of these reforms won’t be hard to find. Big banks, payday lenders and those seeking to close rural offices and privatize the post office have blocked the idea of postal banking for decades. President Trump and top Republicans in Congress oppose universal vote-by-mail, charging, falsely, that it favors Democrats. --

Raise the price on bulk mailings, especially of the junk variety.

I don't think getting rid of the post office is politically a good idea. Many people depend upon it and a lot of people trust it.

Getting ride of is a bad idea maybe focusing on restructuring. Maybe drop Sat delivery or go to MWF for home delivery. Have more automated swlf help kiosks.

The Post Office protects our Democracy? Who the hell voted for ANYONE in the USPS??
Further, for God's sake, how many times? We are NOT a Democracy:roll:

It's not bad if the USPS makes money, but it doesn't have to make money, it just needs to exist and function properly.

Government is not a business.

Hyperbole aside, the statement that Congress required 75 years of advance payment to its pension funds is just not true. In reality, the USPS funding requirements span a broad window of 50+ years, including fixed payments for the first 10 years and a followup in 2017 to develop a 40 year amortization schedule. I've covered this topic in a couple of other threads located here and here.

This was detailed in the 2012 Government Accountability Office's Report to review the financial status with their recommendations on alternative approaches.

Can anyone explain how covid-19 has finacially impacted the post office. What extra expenses have they incurred due to the virus?

The above authored by a very biased Democrat, Kirsten Gillibrand ...

Enough said.

Trump Called the Postal Service a 'Joke.' "I'm Trying to Save It."
He's essentially holding the agency hostage, refusing to approve emergency funding unless it raises its delivery rates.

Too much said.

CT forum is further down. The post office has been on the edge of the cliff for decades. No matter how bankrupt they get, they still survive.

I have to wonder that myself. Because of a combination of covid-19 paranoia, tax refunds, stimulus payments, and student loan payment refunds. People are ordering a lot of more things online than usual. So the post office should be rolling in extra business just like UPS, fed-Ex and various other package delivery companies are.

Trump is no match for the USPS.

They will flatten him, so easily.

It's not bad if the USPS makes money, but it doesn't have to make money, it just needs to exist and function properly.

Government is not a business.

There would not be a problem if the GOP would admit to what they did and repeal the requirement for USPS pension fund to be funded 100% before retirement. The GOP manufactured this crisis under Geo W Bush because they attempted to kill it and privatize the busines almost 15 years ago.

In 2006, Congress passed a law that imposed extraordinary costs on the U.S. Postal Service. The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) required the USPS to create a $72 billion fund to pay for the cost of its post-retirement health care costs, 75 years into the future. This burden applies to no other federal agency or private corporation.

If the costs of this retiree health care mandate were removed from the USPS financial statements, the Post Office would have reported operating profits in each of the last six years. This extraordinary mandate created a financial “crisis” that has been used to justify harmful service cuts and even calls for postal privatization. Additional cuts in service and privatization would be devastating for millions of postal workers and customers.

In its December 2018 report, President Trump’s Task Force on the United States Postal Service reaffirmed current rules related to postal retiree health benefits, calling it “part of a mandate for postal self-sustainability.” However, the Task Force also recognized that the aggressive and accelerated timetable for funding the mandate has proved unworkable. They call for past deficits to be “restructured with the payments re-amortized with new actuarial calculation based on the population of employees at or near retirement age.”

The effing GOP refuses to understand the government is to serve the people, not enrich Big Business and the politicians.

The post office's financial problems exist mostly on paper and stem almost entirely from an absurd law passed under Bush. Undo that, and they're fine.

What does that have to do with C19?

It has to do with the USPS financial situation. Their financial troubles go from "very bad" to "easily dealt with" if you undo that ridiculous law.

If people vote by mail Trump and the GOP will lose and by attacking the USPS he thinks he can prevent voting by mail from occurring.

The post office was created and is necessary by the US Constitution.
Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the United States Constitution, known as the Postal Clause or the Postal Power, empowers Congress "To establish Post Offices and Post Roads".

So funny how the Cultist are against the post office now because of trump. They used to call themselves
constitutionalists

If it is bankrupt, then it is because the government isn't allocating enough money to keep it going. The post office is not a for profit venture. It is a government run service like a fire department. How much money do you think fire departments lose?

Ah the post office. One of the stops on the Republican Hate Express. Next stop NPR, after that change at Planned Parenthood Junction. Ironic considering trains are another worthy thing that the right don’t value.

The claim was made that C19 caused finacial damage to the post office. How?

Increased servers/IT needs to allow for employees to work from home, as well as laptops and other equipment. Increased funding for protective equipment for those who have to work in distribution centers or even carriers, clerks, anyone who has to come into contact with others. Funding for sick leave, days off to account for being sick or just family obligations. This is a small start.

I work for the USPS atm, as does my FIL.

Unfortunately, the hate from the right is only going to intensify as we get into election season. The GOP uses the politics of fear to fool unsuspecting conservatives into doing whatever it takes to keep the "evil democrats" out of office. The number of posters just on these boards alone who honestly believe that Democrats are evil outsiders intent on decimating everything they love about their way of life is nothing short of astonishing. And more more these flames are fanned, the more embers of hatred for the right are kindled on the left. Because why wouldn't you hate someone who hates you.
