Yep, gerrymandering is one tool that incumbents use to stay in power. I'm not sure that granting courts the power do the same thing (try to achieve racial, ethnic or political party parity) is any better. The reason is that (lifetime?) court appointments would then become even more political than they are now if courts are given the power to essentially make/change law.

Re: The man who gerrymandered America

Yet another fine example of a thread from the civically illiterate.

Gerrymandering has been occurring since the US was first formed and broken into voting districts. In other words, gerrymandering has been occurring in the US since the very first census in 1790. The political parties alternate after every census to determine how to reconfigure the districts. If Republicans determined the shape of the districts in your State after the 2010 census, then Democrats will determine the shape of the districts in your State after the 2020 census, or visa versa.

Since the population of every district changes after every census, it is important to ensure that districts are redrawn to ensure they contain an equal number of people. If districts were not redrawn after every census there would be a terrible imbalance in the vote, with some districts having far less representation than other districts.

Choosing to live with the districts that were drawn 231 years ago and never changing them is monumentally stupid.
