At least for once, a bill was passed without a tax cut for the rich, right? Wrong.

While they attacked Democrats for funding Republican bogeymen they don't like, in particular the Kennedy Center for arts with $25 million, a pittance, they were putting in yet another massive tax cut for the rich.

Thanks to a stunning new report from the New York Times, which has been relentless on the tax beat during the Trump administration, we've learned that a provision has been included in the 880-page coronavirus stimulus bill to help the very wealthy in a way that is breathtaking in its scope and detail.

In 2017, Congress actually pass a restriction on a practice trump and Kushner used, to use property depreciation to offset unlimited income and pay no taxes; the change limited such deductions to offsetting 'only' $500,000 of income.

The Republicans repealed that, making it unlimited again, in the must-pass stimulus bill. AND, they even made it retroactive, removing the limit for 2019, and 2018, as well! As the article says, it is stunning in its scope - and I'd add, in its immoral advance of plutocracy and corruption. Yet another huge reason to remove Republicans.

Fascism at its best...or worst. Anybody who says the republicans desire a fair tax code is full of ****. Everyone knows who they coddle, and it's not the working class.

I always said the most personally lucrative deal Trump ever did was his tax bill. Now it's looking like this deal ain't so bad for him, either.

it is amazing that the top 1% pay 40% of the income tax then

While you're right, the corruption that benefits him pales to the harm by the wealthy more broadly, the increase in plutocracy.

I keep asking the same question about the Democrats.

The ugly is about to become the unimaginably ugly, and both parties of wild privilege are just lining their pockets.

I'm sorry, who enacted NAFTA and other BS trade agreements? Mostly democrats and who repealed T.P.P? Trump. It's republicans who care more about the working class. Democrats want more "trade deals" It should be treasonous.

You mean the bill all the Democrats also voted for and Pelosi wanted passed unanimous consent with no debate and no one even showing up? That bill?

Yeah, the Democrats in Congress are nothing but employees of the super rich.

You're telling me that the 2017 tax bill, the evil tax bill that "cut taxes for the rich", actually removed a deduction used by Trump himself?

Doesn't this Orange-Man-Bad rant contradict your previous Orange-Man-Bad rants?

How much of the inome does that same 1% take in?

Maybe we should raise your tax bill another 30% of your income so they could get another tax break.

How does giving billionaires another tax break befit the society?

Are you sure about that?

Donald Trump and six members of his inner circle will be big winners of the Republicans’ vast tax overhaul, with the president personally benefiting from a tax cut of up to $15m a year, research shows.

The US president chalked up his first big legislative win on Wednesday with the $1.5tn bill, the most sweeping revamp of the tax code in three decades, slashing taxes for corporations and the wealthy and dealing the heaviest blow yet to Obamacare.

But analysis by a leading Washington thinktank, the Center for American Progress (CAP), finds that changes to business rules will save Trump roughly $11m to $15m per year, while an amendment to the estate tax – the tax on the transfer of an estate of a deceased person – would potentially save his heirs $4.5m.

Under current law, the first $11.2m of a couple’s estate’s value is excluded from taxation, and any amount above this is taxed at a 40% rate. The new bill doubles the exemption to $22.4m.

Along with Trump himself, Wilbur Ross, the commerce secretary; Linda McMahon, administrator of the Small Business Administration; Betsy DeVos, the education secretary; Steven Mnuchin, the treasury secretary; and Rex Tillerson, the secretary of state, will benefit to the tune of $4.5m from changes to the estate tax, according to the CAP.

I must disagree with the topic line of this thread. This is most certainly not a 'major scandal' for Republicans. It is simply business as usual.

Regards, and stay well.

And that is on over 90% of all the wealth.

Can you see the problem with that?!?

I have offered to every right-winger who blabbers about the rich paying a lot of taxes the same deal the rich give others: give me their income, and I'll pay 100% of the taxes on it. I reserve the right to complain about high taxes.

They don't put their money where their mouth is and take the offer. But they demand others give nearly all the wealth to the rich.

You're assuming that those are two different things.

There are a awful lot of very rich Democrats passing these bills.

Have you given this any thought?

Yeah, the Democrats in Congress are nothing but employees of the super rich.

I see there's a defense against republican complaints about any democrat pork left in the bill. The Repugs voted for it... 100%.

Except the repugs voted in lock step because they're independent thinkers.

That is meaningless if you want to talk about a fair tax code. It is also off topic. The topic is legal loop holes to avoid paying tax, loop holes that are not available to those who work 40 hours a week to keep their lives afloat and to serve as the economic engine of the country.

Who pays the most is irrelevant, what matters is who pays the highest percentage of their actual income?

The guy that uses tax breaks to ensure he only pays 15% of his $1,000,000.00 income, pays more dollars than the guy with no tax breaks who pays 30% of $75,000.00.

There needs to be a minimum percentage that you pay on income from all sources. Say 20%, and no matter what loopholes you use, you cannot drop your tax rate below that percentage.
The goal of the 1% will be to pay the 20%. They will use the tax laws to reduce their payble to 20% , they would not be able to reduce it to 0%

That little section of the bill providing retroactive goodies for the uber-wealthy may go a long way toward explaining Majority Leader Addison McConnell's almost tearful plea to rush the bill through the legislative process. The saying which goes 'You won't know what's in it until after you pass it,' comes to mind.

Regards, stay well and be thankful you're not one of the '15'.

they never will. Rush and Sean have drilled the 40% thing into their brains while always leaving out "the rest of the story".

and the funny thing is that i bet not one Republican here is the 1%. they do their work for free.

it is amazing that the top 1% pay 40% of the income tax then

it is even more amazing that 50% of the country pays 98% of the taxes and these people complain when we want to pay less.

Do you also support a minimum actual amount of federal taxes one should pay? Make everyone pay the same rate? I'd love to pay the same RATE as the average citizen.

you'd be wrong. You don't have to be all that rich to be in the top one percent.

And labor does 99.99999% of the actual production.

I’m sure labor would be happy as **** to earn enough to pay more in taxes. Good lord.
