Congress makes lynching a federal crime, 65 years after Emmett Till

Both the Senate and House have passed legislation that will make lynching a Federal crime. President Trump is expected to sign the bill. I hope he does sign this bill it is way past time for this law.

How far will partisan beliefs go, will those who think Trump can so no right support his signing this law or be agianst it simply because Trump is for it?

The Emmet Till case was absolutely horrifying, the kind of story that will give you nightmares for a week. I can't believe it took so long to get this law passed.

4 congressmen voted against this....amazing.

4 congressmen voted against this....amazing.

Here are the four:

Republican Reps. Louie Gohmert (Texas), Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Ted Yoho (Fla.), and independent Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.) — voted against the measure.

Strange mix Gohmert I can see; Amash not so much.....

If anything points to the corrupt uselessness of our politicians, it's this.

What will they do next?

Censure buggy whips?

:hm

I would be interested in their reasons for a NO vote.

He was lynched cause he flirted with a white girl.

Just a few years ago, the white girl, now an old woman, came forward and said she made the whole thing up, that Emmet Till didn't flirt with her.

I don't understand the point. Murder is already a Federal crime and carries the death penalty.

Kinda makes you wonder kind of bull**** is buried in the bill.

Just a few years ago, the white girl, now an old woman, came forward and said she made the whole thing up, that Emmet Till didn't flirt with her.

And that was proven to be a lie. The men that murdered him admitted that never happened. Emmett Till was 14 years old and not dumb enough to flirt with an adult white woman in racist Mississippi. He was brutally murdered because he was black and defenseless.

From Wiki
Emmett Till - Wikipedia

Decades later, Bryant disclosed that she had fabricated part of the testimony regarding her interaction with Till, specifically the portion where she accused Till of grabbing her waist and uttering obscenities; "that part's not true," Bryant stated in a 2008 interview with historian Timothy Tyson.[2][4][5] Till's interaction with Bryant, perhaps unwittingly, violated the strictures of conduct for an African-American male interacting with a white woman in the Jim Crow-era South

I believe there is a provision in the bill that the internet poster known as 'apdst' must kiss a picture of Hillary Clinton every morning, before eating his two slices of avocado toast.

Just a guess it is probably out of some double jeopardy concern where someone could be tried at the state level for murder but then may face another trial at the federal level. Ultimately it is a pretty pointless law.

I knew there was a reason Gohmert would vote agin it. That must be it.

From my previously provided link, Gohmert :
A 10-year maximum when we’re talking about lynching?”
It seems he argues that is too short, supports the death penalty instead. Perhaps I am misreading this.

Given all the school shootings, we should totally outlaw shooting someone on a school campus.

10 years is absurd, they should never be allowed back into society.

It's just for show: "Look how woke I am!"

I wonder if the Feds will go back and prosecute the agents who murdered people at Ruby Ridge?

Well it's about time something is finally done about this mass epidemic of lynchings!

You can't even walk down a street anymore without seeing somebody hanging in a tree!
