Should the Amererican people know as much as they can get about the people they are electing to the highest peosition in our country, the presidency? Of course with Trump with holding his fianacial records the Dems have been pushing to have the revealed and I have to agree. Knowing who our president, any president owes his allegiance to is important when deciding who to vote for is very important, but it is not all we need to know. We also need to know if the candidate has any health problems that would effect his ability to carry out the office and our vote. We now know that Reagan was having memory problems during his last years in office, but no one knew. The finances and the health of those who we are electing to the highest possition and possibly the most powerful positiion on the planet is importatn and I believe the public has a right to know before voting. So I would support a law requiring both financial and health records by candidates to be made public., would you?

Too bad you didn't make a poll.

I'm torn on the issue since there's no Constitutional requirement (for obvious reasons), but it would seem necessary in order to provide the transparency that allows a full democratic process.

Anyway, good luck in your responses.

Nope, you cannot amend the Constitutional requirements for POTUS by simply having congress pass a law. Why, exactly, should these new requirements apply only to candidates for POTUS and not to all candidates for federal elected office?

We all know Bernie had a heart attack. Does that mean people should not vote for him or he should not be a nominee.
The candidates are first American citizens and have the right of privacy especially health records.

I’m going to bet the majority if not all members in Congress have investments and the argument can be raised they vote for laws that impact their investments. Should members of Congress who create the laws should open up their financial records?

If this is a big issue for you, you should push for a law requiring candidates for congressional seats to release their full medical and financial (not just tax) records. Since so many Congresscritters are in office for decades they have much more impact on policy and spending than the President.

Have we seen Bloombergs tax returns? I guy worth $60 billion has to have some questionable ties to Russian oligarchs.

The qualifications for President are defined by the US Constitution. If you wish to alter those qualifications get two-thirds of Congress to pass an amendment and three-fourths of the State legislatures to ratify it. Until that happens, nobody cares what you support.

Nope.

Look. You can...and maybe should, depending on the candidate...ask for such information, but such information has long been considered private and nobody should be required, without a court order, to reveal such information if they don't want to.

So...if you ask for this information and the candidate refuses, what should you do? The answer is...what you would do anyway: Evaluate everything about that candidate, including the refusal to reveal private information, and decide if you want to vote for them or not.

I might be ok with the disclosure of health records, but not tax records. We have the IRS and if a candidate has cheated on their taxes it will be known. Other than that, what a person pays in taxes is private as far as I'm concerned.

Of course my opinion is subject to change, because I haven't given much thought to either.

Sure, as long as those candidates are running as Democrats.

All public officials have both their wages and the taxes they pay available to the public. However, unless and until they are elected to public office their financial information is private. Only when they start receiving public funds does the public have access to that information. Meaning Trump's financial information concerning the office of President became available to the public on January 20, 2017, the day he was sworn into office. But none of the financial information prior to that is available to the public because he did not hold public office prior to that date.

It has only been an issue since Trump was elected, since he was the first non-politician to be elected President. Every other President, including George Washington, held public office prior to becoming President. Which made their financial information already available to the public.

I did not say they would not include other candidates, I am just asking about the president as we are coming up to the election. And asking for this information would not violate the constitution.

I agree that asking for it would not violate the constituion but requiring it by law would - just as changing the age, residency or citizenship requirements "by law" would.

First, most states have laws requiring that candidates meet certain requirements to be on the ballot and if they do not violate the constitution, then neither would this law. And I would have not problem including all candidates for Federal elected offices, but kept this to the President as that major election is coming up.

Comrade BS appears to be funneling money from his campaigne to his wife. Allegedly of course.

I think he may be a typical corrupt leftist, someone needs to look into this.

I think you are wrong. The constitution limits the people allowed to run, but does not limit the the congress from requiring other things for someone to run. Look at the states who often have requirements outside of those in the contitution.

The confidentiality of tax records is imposed by statute and as such, there is nothing unconstitutional about making certain records public.

We really do need a law that protects other Americans from those Americans that might, while thinking for themselves, make a choice that other Americans don't like. We need to remember that the 1st Amendment protects freedom of speech but doesn't saw anything anywhere about protecting freedom of thought and that's REALLY what we need to be protected from. There really should be a congressional committee that determines what beliefs are reasonable and beneficial for all Americans and, following their report, laws should be enacted to limit thought to those approved criteria. Citizens who violate those laws should be properly re-educated. There is plenty of free space in Alaska where we could house all the "free thinkers" until they get their heads right. There has never been a danger to our nation like Trump presents. Even when Kruschev was putting nukes in Cuba we were safer than we are today.

Does that more or less comport with your thinking on the subject?

That would be up to the SCOTUS to decide, but should that be allowed (at the state level) then it would open a huge can of worms.

No, States Can't Make Presidential Candidates Release Tax Returns

That is quite different from making that a requirement to run for POTUS.

LOL. I must admit it is quite funny that Bernie blasts Trump for saying he would release his tax returns and never did and now Bernie is doing the very same thing with his health records. But the left will still believe Bernie is their lord and savior.

Go ahead and make every tax payer's tax returns public and see how that works out.

Why do you want to see candidates' tax returns so bad? What do you expect to find?
