Boy Scouts file bankruptcy

We had a boyscout lodge in my hometown. I joined up when I was in my early teens. It was good times.

I'm sorry to hear they are having trouble. Looks like letting unsupervised adults around kids is a bad idea.

They didn't, at least as recently as 2000 when, according to your link, they won a related lawsuit.

But then they flagged themselves (accurately) as an intolerant organization, and suddenly a lot of the state funding they relied on started drying up, because they were no longer compatible with the requirements. In CT, the state is precluded from "becoming a party to any agreement, arrangement or plan which has the effect of sanctioning discrimination." This is all from your link.

That's pretty straightforward. They cut their own throat in terms of capturing state funding, by declaring themselves as intolerant.

And then they lost the lawsuits where they were whining about that, and here we are. I must have skipped past where they were forced to accept gay folks.

Is it your contention that all the claimed abused happened after 2000?

Do you think the states should be compelled to make an exception for the BSA, so they can get funding they no longer qualify for? Upon what basis?

I went straight through Cub Scouts > Webelos > BSA > Order of the Arrow > Eagle Scout and had a wonderful experience, no issues whatsoever during my time that I'm aware of then or since.

But if these claims of abuse are accurate, then it must be made to stop. Whether BSA survives that process is secondary.

Exactly. It's easier to destroy the patriarchy if you destroy the institutions supporting it from childhood first. Those that don't follow the liberal order MUST be destroyed!

The grievance is that some 300 claims of abuse comprise less than 0.0003% of the 110 million Americans who've participated in Boy Scouts programs since its founding.

By contrast, 6.5% of NYC high school students report having been physically forced to have sexual intercourse when they didn't want to. This is approximately 24,000 times the rate of sexual abuse the Boy Scouts are currently being flushed out of existence for.

Should we also flush NYC high schools out of existence?

Or instead maybe develop some perspective?

What has BSA done about those small percentage of cases? You don't honestly believe that reported cases equal total cases do you?

I knew little about the BSA, but heard a woman talk about it... that it was a great way for city kids to be part of something positive. She waxed eloquent about it... and was pissed it has been destroyed.

She... was a former Leftist.

I somehow doubt the number of total cases is anywhere near 24,000 times as great as the number of reported cases, meaning the BSA is still a good deal less culpable than NYC. (You'll note that the 6.5% is also a reported figure, BTW.)

And I don't mean to pick on New York. I just happened to find their stats first. Pick any major American city and you'd find comparable numbers.

The only reason this is happening now--as others have pointed out--is that the BSA took a moral stance some years ago that marked them for legal assassination. If it was truly about preventing sexual assault, BSA wouldn't be on the top 10,000 list of organizations facing this kind of onslaught.

Liberals are never so happy as when they've managed to destroy something they've hated all along. No doubt there were some pedophiles in the BSA but that could have been handled. It is the avalanche of harassment suits brought by the left which has killed the BSA. Now, they'll no doubt be off to their next target. I'm sure anything with "boy" or "girl" in the name will be ripe for attack. The left likes nothing so much has obliterating any distinction between the sexes.
 
There are people more concerned about preserving institutions than the people forever damaged by them.

Five years ago I would have disagreed with you.

Incidentally: Please don't call progressive activists "liberals". There's nothing the least bit liberal about progressivism, and calling it by the name 'liberal' is an insult to the founders and champions of true (classical) liberalism. True liberals (many of whom were proud Boy Scouts) would abhor this kind of state-enabled assassination-by-process.

My son is a Boy Scout. It's been absolutely wonderful for him -- it's earned him social confidence, leadership skills, life skills, the respect and admiration of his peers in the Scouts. For an otherwise aimless teen, the Scouts has been the lifeline to keep him from drifting into troubled waters. I hate what's happening here. I used to be a "liberal," and I can't friggin' stand what the left has become. Infuriating!

I use "liberals" in the specific sense of identifying those who call themselves liberals. Yes, they are closer to authoritarians than anything classically liberal but I want them to know whom we are talking about.

It was a great way for all kids to be part of something positive. When I was in scouting, as a kid, the kids in my troop were all a bunch of country ****s, but we did things that even the average country boy doesn't do.
