Trump Is Failing His Dictatorship Test

After impeachment, the president has been passing most of the checkpoints on the way to authoritarianism.

Shortly after Donald Trump was elected, I wrote up a list of the “10 Ways to Tell if Your President Is a Dictator.” I wasn’t saying Trump was in fact an aspiring autocrat; it was merely a list of warning signs to keep track of as his presidency preceded. In 2017, I offered an updated assessment and concluded that the danger of creeping autocracy was pretty serious. Now that Trump has been acquitted by a Republican-controlled Senate that couldn’t even be bothered to interview any witnesses with personal knowledge of his possible high crimes and misdemeanors, it seems appropriate to revisit my list once again. Spoiler alert: There are some flashing red lights on the dashboard.

• 1. Systematic efforts to intimidate the media.
• 2. Building an official pro-Trump media network.
• 3. Politicizing the civil service, military, National Guard, or domestic security agencies.
• 4. Using government surveillance against domestic political opponents.
• 5. Using state power to reward corporate backers and punish opponents.
• 6. Stacking the Supreme Court.
• 7. Enforcing the law for only one side.
• 8. Really rigging the system
• 9. Fearmongering.
• 10. Demonizing the opposition.

Because most educated people remember
Obama tapping the phones of conservative reporters and raiding their homes for information
Weaponizing the IRS exclusively against conservative businesses
Having the Senate change the vote requirement to confirm a SCOTUS from 60 to 50 to stack the court
Creating a fake dossier against a political opponent to get FISA warrants to spy on their campaign
And for the first time in history, having a former president running an organization against a sitting president.

But I am sure you have no knowledge of any of this. You never do. It's that convenient memory you love to work from.

Pretty sure there were some crazies on the right-side that also claimed that Obama wouldn't leave office either.

I have no doubt that Trump will leave when his term is up. But he is pushing the authoritative path faster than previous Dems and Repubs had pushed it.

I would be in favor of eliminating all EO's. No president should have EO power. Everything must go through Congress.

I think there had been some proper call for an EO, even George Washington had used them. However, what the EO is today is nothing to what it was or should be. It's now defacto-legislation and the use of the EO should be drastically limited.
