There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.

The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.

"Prejudice is extremely complex and multifaceted, making it critical that any factors contributing to bias are uncovered and understood," he said.

Yes, someone once told me that people who don't use reason to arrive at their beliefs are not likely to appreciate reasons why their beliefs may be wrong.

"There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals," Hodson said.

Nosek gave another example to illustrate the dangers of taking the findings too literally.

"We can say definitively men are taller than women on average," he said. "But you can't say if you take a random man and you take a random woman that the man is going to be taller. There's plenty of overlap."

And nobody has said in this thread that ALL conservatives are one thing or ALL liberals are the other. The articles says ON AVERAGE that certain characteristics seem to apply. Nobody here is being singled out.

The fact that the article and the OP's excerpt chose to call these individuals, "dumb", is not just disingenuous - but would also seem to indicate the quality of the reporting here.

I don't know if it is possible to improve our intelligence. Everyone is capable of learning, with the notable exception of Donald Trump who appears to be incapable of learning. His studied ignorance astounds me.

Seen plenty of questionable "studies" from the right linking liberalism with all sorts of negative things.
 
The lowest educational demographics are blacks and Latinos, without which the Democratic Party would only qualify as a 3rd party. It is probably unwise for white Democrats on this forum to constantly keep claiming low education and low intelligence people should vote Republican. Your white supremacy and white segregation based wishes might come true - and if so it is the end of the Democratic Party.

I don't think Trump is actually low IQ or stupid. He's just a con man and a criminal who knows how to get what he wants by lying, insulting, threatening, posturing, and pandering. Part of his act is to appear to be on the same level as he apparently thinks is that of the average American. That is, ignorant, stupid, bigoted, materialistic, mendacious.

He's a modern day PT Barnum without the elephant act.

Of course since the "researcher/political hack" is who defined what constitutes "conservative" and "liberal."

Yeah, worst of all with him as president the unemployment rates for blacks and Latinos is the lowest it's ever been - and lower income wages have increased over 40%. THIS IS CRIMINAL AND MUST BE STOPPED! You just have to check the Democratic laws under slavery if you don't believe it is criminal.
