Trump claims he has 'legal right' to intervene in criminal cases | US news | The Guardian

President reasserts his right to tweet on judicial issues following William Barr’s warning the posts ‘make it impossible for me to do my job’

Donald Trump has ignored a plea from his attorney general, William Barr, to not tweet about ongoing legal cases, by using his Twitter account to say he has a “legal right” to do so.

Barr delivered a remarkable public rebuke of the president just hours earlier, saying that Trump’s tweets “make it impossible for me to do my job” and that he would not be “bullied or influenced” over justice department decisions.

I wonder how many hours Barr has left before he is shown the door.

Trump has never read the Constitution. That's obvious. For him to claim total executive power over all branches of the Government is a lot more than an overreach. It's him thinking he is a king.

Of course he does. He is a narcissist and egomaniac who wants to be dictator.

"A remarkable public rebuke"? :lamo

Your commentary is as lame as it is wrong.

Narcissistic personality disorder is found more commonly in men. The cause is unknown but likely involves a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Symptoms include an excessive need for admiration, disregard for others' feelings, an inability to handle any criticism, and a sense of entitlement.

I think this fits Trump's personality.

The headline is not supported by the facts presented in the article.

Trump does have a right to free expression. Just because he is allowed to express himself, such expression in and of itself does not equate to a Presidential "order." There is no "intervention" just because he tweets an opinion.

I don't know why people think that just because one holds office, they lose all rights to free expression.

In fact, I prefer they express themselves as freely as they wish, much like I prefer that hate groups of any stripe continue expressing themselves openly.

I want to KNOW what such people think. How else to make an informed decision about how to respond and/or react to them?

From the article linked in the OP -

In an early morning tweet, Trump referred to Barr’s assertion that Trump had never asked him to do anything related to a criminal case, including Stone’s. “This doesn’t mean that I do not have, as president, the legal right to do so, I do, but I have so far chosen not to!” Trump said in the post.

Trump is right. He can ask Barr to intervene. He can not, lawfully, order Barr to intervene.

So nobody on the right has a problem with a President using his DOJ to help his buddies? That's the swamp, people.

Claiming that occurred is delusional. That is why most rational folks do not have an issue with what did occur.
There was no untoward influence on the DOJ by the President.

The President can intervene in any executive branch process that he chooses to.

You need to learn the concept of 2 very important words. Judicial independence.

Judicial independence is the concept that the judiciary should be independent from the other branches of government. That is, courts should not be subject to improper influence from the other branches of government or from private or partisan interests.

The judicial component of government is independent in order to insulate its members from punitive or coercive actions by the legislative and executive departments of the government. If the judiciary is independent, then it can make fair decisions that uphold the rule of law, an essential element of any genuine constitutional democracy.

The U.S. Constitution, for example, protects judicial independence in two ways. First, Article III says that federal judges may hold their positions “during good Behaviour.” In effect, they have lifetime appointments as long as they satisfy the ethical and legal standards of their judicial office. Second, Article III says that the legislative and executive branches may not combine to punish judges by decreasing payments for their services. The constitutions of some democratic countries provide appointments to the judges for a specific period of time, but invariably they protect their independence of action during their terms of office.

Alexander Hamilton, a framer of the U.S. Constitution, offered justification for an independent judiciary in the 78th paper of “The Federalist.” He wrote, “The complete independence of the courts of justice is peculiarly essential in a limited Constitution.” Hamilton claimed that only an independent judicial branch of government would be able to impartially check an excessive exercise of power by the other branches of government. Thus, the judiciary guards the rule of law in a constitutional democracy. – John Patrick, Understanding Democracy, A Hip Pocket Guide

You must be kidding us. How is it that all the cases that Barr is putting his thump on the scale with are Trump related allies? You must know that Trump and Barr talk privately on a daily basis concerning all these cases. Trump has been singing from the mountain since he was elected that he want's his political rivals prosecuted. He's finally found a loyal corrupt AG that will attempt to carry that out for him.

Thank god for un-corruptible judges who have integrity and wont be bullied by these two. Case and point, Andy McCabe. This is just the beginning folks. The DOJ corruption is just starting to get exposed.

No, he should never comment or interfere in any way with legal proceedings; especially with a judiciary which is supposed to be impartial and immune from politically or personally-motivated interference. That isn't his job; and tweeting leads, quite rightly, to accusations of coercion and/or corruption.

Holder said he was Obama's wingman.

What did Holder say about this issue?

All correct-except that narcissists and sociopaths don't really have a single personality. They adopt one to suit whatever situation they find themselves in. Who knows what Trump's 'real' personality is. Trump doesn't, that's for sure.

Asking as a President is the same as ordering..

They are so far down the rabbit hole that there's probably no getting them out of it.

legal or not, Trump needs to keep his mouth shut as far as the tweets go. we do not need him making Barr's work any harder.

they, and we, need to be able to prosecute that ****ing swamp with prejudice.... legal and justified of course, but with prejudice. IF they cannot do that for whatever reason, then they will lose eventually and this **** with the ruling class up there will go on.

He had best start realizing he is playing a very dangerous game by going against the status quo, even for him.

That's correct. As Michael Cohen said in his congressional testimony, Trump is like a mob boss. You don't have to hear it exactly from his mouth, you get use to knowing what he means (wants you to do).

When Trump tweeted that he thought Stone's sentencing guidelines were way too high, Barr new exactly what he had to do to please the dictator, and he did it. Trump didn't have to spell it out. It goes both ways with the Trump allies and the Trump enemies. I wonder just how pissed Trump is over McCabe being released from federal investigation?

I have no idea, and anyway why should someone else's opinion have any bearing?

Only because you folks latch onto anything the MSM presents to you and regurgitate it like Pinocchio and are controlled by the talking heads on TV. Eric Holder refused to testify and without any problem whatsoever said he was Obama's wing man. He admitted that his job was to implement Obama's policy. Nary a peep from MSM then, or NOW,

Yet, the media continues to show it is easy peasy to indoctrinate the masses into Trump hatred by talking about a TWEET by Trump and NOT telling Barr what to do as Obama did and you guys just eat it up and repost it here.

How many criminal federal cases did Holder get involved in? Advancing Obama's policies has nothing to do with meddling in criminal prosecution. Apples and oranges.

Trump once again shows his utter lack of knowledge his private schools failed him and no amount of money will fix the broken system. In other words, Trump is a clueless Dotard...Covfefe..

wouldn't know it if he did, as the MSM would not say much about it.
