Defending? We were supposed to "defend" them with a real trial, with evidence and witnesses, and we were denied that.
We have one more chance...November, at the ballot box.
After that, if GOP wins both chambers and Trump wins reelection, it's a fair assumption that they will finish "dismantling the administrative state" and permanently hobbling our elections, by any means necessary, and with total impunity.
The supremacy of the Executive Branch, specifically the office of the President, will be made permanent, again by any means necessary.

Imagine that being discussed in the Oval Office and then being enacted in the rubber stamp House and Senate.
You might think it's far fetched now...give it a year if the above trifecta happens and it may very well become reality.
By simple virtue of the fact that there is now no longer any check or balance that can stop this juggernaut save for a landslide rout of the Trump-GOP White House, House and Senate, there will be nothing to stave off such a move being made.
Simply put, if they think they can get away with it, consider it a foregone conclusion.
