    Re: RIP Jim Lehrer

A good man. A quality man.
His life story is worth taking the time to read in the link provided above.

His rules for journalism are profound.

    Jim Lehrer’s Rules

    1. Do nothing I cannot defend.
    2. Cover, write and present every story with the care I would want if the story were about me.
    3. Assume there is at least one other side or version to every story.
    4. Assume the viewer is as smart and caring and good a person as I am.
    5. Assume the same about all people on whom I report.
    6. Assume personal lives are a private matter until a legitimate turn in the story absolutely mandates otherwise.
    7. Carefully separate opinion and analysis from straight news stories and clearly label everything
    8. Do not use anonymous sources or blind quotes except on rare and monumental occasions. No one should be allowed to attack another anonymously.
    9. “I am not in the entertainment business.”

    Re: RIP Jim Lehrer

Lehrer so rarely gave much indication of personal view. Until PBS changed the "McNeil-Lehrer Report" from a half-hour to a one hour format. The reason was to have more different subject material. That the half-hour tended to be about limited subject material and "drone-one" from the audience perspective. Lehrer objected. He thought time actually limited time on a given subject, which it did, and thus gave less information necessary for the public to make an informed decision. You learned more about different things, but not enough about anything to draw an informed conclusion. I liked the new format. But I missed the depth. I learned less of more.

A trusting person and journalist who was trusted by quality viewers.

He was central to the financial success of PBS which relied on a donation by the citizen for government matching funds, and for respectable corporate donations to excellent and quality feature programming.

Well done Jim Lehrer who can rest easy now.

An honest journalist. If he had still been reporting the last few years I'm sure he would be one of Trump's "enemies of the state".

Rest in Peace. I grew up with the MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour playing in the background.

I honestly didnít watch him but assuming he hewed closely to his rules thatís something I regret.

And those rules should be given to every person who presumes to call themselves a journalist.

I'll never forget when he was moderating a debate among GOP presidential hopefuls in 1996 and ask them about

    "Middle ass tax cuts".
