How Big is Africa?

That is fun!

Stuff I learned this year listening to Universe stuff on the internet:

1. Venus rotates backwards and very slowly (walking speed): 1 rotation for every two orbits
(correction: 2 days every year; its orbit is about equal to it's rotational period)

2. Uranus lies on its side, rotating up and down, meaning the sun rises and sets north to south or vice versa

3. Mercury has ice at the poles even though it is on average only 35 million miles from the sun.

Actually, he quite obviously recognized that Africa is a continent; specifically, he said, one that you could "stick almost all the popular countries from the other continents into it":

I'm not sure which is better, Mr. Planar:

Case 1. You could not understand that he was simply referring to the size of the African continent or perhaps could not understand the way analogies work, so you thought this was a comparison between the continent of Africa and "countries".

Case 2. You were going for a dishonest *gotcha*, and concluded that claiming he compared a continent to countries was a clever way of making other people think he was foolish.

Both are bad.

How could you misunderstand what he was saying or think anyone else might? "X is big, you can put almost all Y into it" =/= "X is comparable to Y"

Y is being used as a unit of measurement.

Case 3. Everyone I know growing up knew the difference in real size by seeing continents and countries on both a globe and flat map both. Excuse me for being absolutely surprised as to what the OP said: "I've read about the fake maps we grew up with, maps which intentionally minimized the Dark Continent."

And he is insinuating racism by his wording too.

Apparently, the newer generation only know the flat earth. That's why I have repeatedly said our education system is failing the kind. It obviously failed him.

“Great talks”

Nothing in Gaddafi’s history would suggest that he was even slightly trustworthy. Not a single goddamn thing. The man was a narcissistic thug responsible for the deaths of thousands of people both directly and indirectly. He routinely raped the members of his female bodyguard unit, so he wasn’t simply a mass murderer but a rapist as well. There was zero reason to sit by and let him slaughter who knows how many people until he was convinced all who opposed him were dead.

“Integrity”

Did we promise Gaddafi that he could slaughter as many of his own people as he saw fit?

Did we promise to protect him?

Did we sign a formal treaty allying ourselves with him?

No?

Then there was no question of “integrity” involved.

The facts are that Gaddafi was both directly and indirectly responsible for murdering Americans and deserved all of what he got and more besides.

I'm done with this. All was explained in 2011 when this happened. You only know the leftists propaganda to have him killed. This is not the proper thread for this discussion. If you were only listening to the cheerleaders instead of those pointing out the fallacies also, I'm sorry.

Big enough to stick almost all the popular countries from the other continents into it.

I've read about the fake maps we grew up with, maps which intentionally minimized the "Dark Continent." But, the pic above really makes that clear, IMO.

I've got some suggestions for those empty spaces you left: I think, if we break it up, we could put the southern U.S. in there, from Texas over to Florida.

The point is, the OP announces that the African continent is big. So ... ? We can't help wonder why that is even taking up real estate on this forum. ALL the continents are big. Are we guilty of thinking Africa is small? No.

That appears to be the assumption. I'm surprised if there are lots of people who believe as he does.

He claimed it was "intentionally minimized." It's simply what happens when you project a round object to a flat surface maintaining readable latitude and logitude lines.

The ignorance of those who thing we are "minimizing" Africa sounds me.

No, that was not the question. You should care as much about Africa as you care about other continents. Why not?

The OP is about the geographical SIZE of Africa. Is it bigger than Asia? North or South or Central America? Eurasia? Hmmm. Interesting question? Maybe, but it has NOTHING to do with politics, does it?

Are we supposed to be thinking -- Wow! Africa is big! That means, Africa must be a powerful and important force in the world. Because of its size? Antartica is big. Do we have extra respect for Antartica because it's big?

It is smaller than Asia but larger than North America.

Antarctica is smaller than South America.

Area in square kilometers:

44,579,000 Asia
30,221,523 Africa
24,709,000 North America
17,840,000 South America
14,200,000 antarctica
10,180,000 Europe
8,525,989 Australia

So in other words you can’t actually defend your position and have resorted to wailing because your favorite mass murderer got himself overthrown. Got it.

Was this “leftist propaganda”?
