I guess you mean in the 2000s, which is true enough.

And I agree the Laffer Curve isn't inherently dishonest, but it's invariably used dishonestly in political discourse. Its purpose was/is to sell the free lunch theory of tax cuts that the GOP argues explicitly, such as with the latest round of Trump tax cuts. We even heard this bull**** from the Treas. Sec. Mnuchin - “The [tax] plan will pay for itself with growth.” That's the Laffer Curve lie in practice.

FWIW, taxes aren't theft, they are the cost of living in a developed country.
if it isn't theft it's extortion.

Give us money or negative things will happen to you is the definition of extortion.

Even if you think it's the cost of living in a developed country it's still at the very least extortion.

This is simply inaccurate. The Koch brothers threw a wad of money at the Tea party, but they never got much traction with it. Armey was a like-thinker who happened to be in Congress. They got along but I never saw much influence there either.

As to Trump, not in 2016 at least. There is some overlap, but Tea party people were not big in Trump's support and vice versa. I think you can attribute most of Johnson's significant increase to Tea party faithful who would not vote Trump. That may have changed because Trump's job performance. In spite of the deficit, there are a lot of things in his job performance for fiscal conservatives to like.

The Laffer Curve has never been observed to work in real life.....except as a political gimmick.

As a gimmick, it has been gold the Republican Party has mined in every administration in my adult life time, including the current one.

It appeals directly to the buy now, pay later mentality of most Americans. You can have it all. Just sign the IOU. We (the politicians), will be gone by the time the bill comes due.

So, George HW Bush and Bill Clinton spent a decade cleaning up Reagan’s deficits. George W Bush promptly doubled the national debt and helped bequeath his successor with a depression.

Eight years later, and Trump is back at it, and his financial Svengali (and Wall Street’s man in the White House), reassured yet again!

We have the debt to prove it.

If you want a lower deficit stop voting for people who plan on spending money.

Unless a good Libertarian candidate emerges, I can support a moderate Dem. Biden, Klobuchar, or Mayor Pete. If it's Bernie, I will abstain. I bet I'm not alone.

Nobody does care. That's why we keep voting people in that don't do anything about it. In fact we keep voting people in that make it worse.

Who's putting it all at Trump's feet?

Trump took a great economy, one that had record breaking steady growth, and needed to give huge tax cuts to the richest Americans, and let industry destroy the environment, to keep it going. Trump is using the crackhead economic strategy: Steal from your family, and spend it all on feeling great tonight.

I've heard meth and opiates are a huge problem in middle America, maybe that's why so many love and excuse this strategy?
