Vermont Lawmakers Propose Bill To Legalize Prostitution

One of the bill’s sponsors, Rep. Selene Colburn who is a Burlington Progressive, said she believed decriminalizing so-called sex work would offer prostitutes more safety and improve their health. Colburn also stated that if prostitution were not considered illegal in the state, charges would not be brought against the sex worker or the buyer.

The reason for this proposal is, by driving sex work underground, we’re creating much more dangerous conditions for sex workers.

    Why shouldn't it be legal?
"They don't believe in our institutions!" the Democrats wail, as they go on and on about how the Senate and Electoral College need to be abolished, the Supreme Court altered, and that the upcoming election result can't be trusted if it doesn't go their way.

Not really sure either way. Thought I would get other opinions on the subject.

Yes, it is a good idea.

US history has proven conclusively that sending demand for a product or a service "underground" ends up benefiting criminal enterprise the most and increases negatively both economic and social consequences.

Alcohol, drugs, prostitution, gambling, take your pick... each time they are outlawed they still happen.

In the case of alcohol at the time, it jump started the largest criminal enterprise in US history.

Only dwarfed by what happened with the so called 'war on drugs,' which jump started the largest international criminal enterprise in world history.

You guys really think doubling down on prostitution will end that demand? Sure about that?

There will always be markets for certain things, no matter how determined the government may be to outlaw them.

People didn't stop drinking because Prohibition became a reality. No, it was just driven underground.

People did not stop smoking marijuana. If anything, it has been normalized to the point where more and more laws are starting to be overturned.

Women did not refrain from seeking ways to end unwanted pregnancies before Roe v. Wade. They just had to deal with unsafe procedures that risked their own health.

And there is always going to be a market for sex. There has been for thousands of years and will be long after we are all dust in the ground. As long as everyone involved is consenting and healthy, there is no reason why the government needs to criminalize it. Legalizing it makes things safer for both the sex worker and the individual buying those services while also providing a new tax stream for the government. It's a win for all involved.

    It's a great idea.

Then cops could be assigned to doing real police work: catching violent criminals who rob, sucker punch, or murder innocent victims.

(Sad to say, though, that some activists in Europe want to recriminalize prostitution. In Sweden, if a man goes to another country where prostitution is legal, he will be prosecuted when he returns to Sweden, where it is now illegal.) (In Japan, the Americans made it illegal after World War II. But the Japanese, being grown-up people, know how to massage that law.)

If prostitution were legal or tolerated in this country (as it often was before World War II), we would see a lot fewer sex crimes.

When it comes to sexuality, many Americans are such hypocrites.

No, I didn't even come close to stating that. I just asked for opinions.

"You guys" meaning anyone in the forums, since we have plenty of social conservatives still calling for new rounds of outlawing so many things.

Is this really a good idea?
Yes, because social conservatism is a hideous ideology that creates criminal behavior out of the emotions and feelings of a bunch of theocrats.

There is no reason we should continue to flood our prison system and burden tax payers for this behavior.

It's safer if it is taxed and regulated.

Is this really a good idea?
No. They should do what Sweden did: decriminalize prostitution, but keep solicitation of prostitution illegal. Their rates of prostitution plummeted, and rates of abuse of women plummeted when Johns realized they could no longer get away with abusing women and count on them not going to the police.

"Legalizing and regulating" prostitution simply encourages human trafficking.
Itís in the small things that the rot starts. Do the wrong thing once, itís easier to do it again. Do the individualistic thing once, it is easy to do it again.

    Fiat justitia, et pereat mundus
