AOC compares paid family leave with the separation of puppies from their mothers.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has stark opinions on U.S. paid family leave policies.
"Puppies aren't separated from their moms until 8 weeks. Less than that is thought of as harmful or abusive." Rep. Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Tuesday. "One of the most common lengths of US paid family leave is 6 weeks." "So yes," the tweet continued, "when we 'let the market decide' on parental leave, 'the market' treats people worse than dogs."

She also stated:

We have to design policies that have wage replacement that's high enough so that men can afford to take leave. We also need a culture and sort of a discussion and men standing up to say: "Leave taking is important to me, and here's the way that it allowed me to not only bond with my child, but also support my partner."

Her comparison was rebutted by Rachel Greszler, a labor expert at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, did not take kindly to Ocasio-Cortez's analogy.

"As a woman who has given birth to six children, I find being compared to a dog with puppies incredibly offensive," Greszler said after the hearing, later adding: "And in regards to more serious discussions of how we can help families that don't have access to paid family leave, AOC presented misleading data, failed to recognize basic economic principles, as well as ignored the evidence of government paid family leave programs across the world."

But AOC was not to quit there:

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez advocated for a minimum of three months paid family leave in the U.S. in a follow-up tweet, adding: "Ideally, I believe we should have 6-12 months of paid leave" - just as many other industrial nations do.

So, paid leave for mothers and fathers from 1/2 year to 1 year with a wage increase high enough to support them both. No clue about the impact to businesses and companies and the losses they would incur if this were the case. I would not say she is as dumb as a box of rocks, with this I think she may be the box of rocks.

While many Mom and Pop operations would struggle with the idea the big corporations that are making billions and trillions should adopt the idea.

Ignoring the disgusting american position on parenthood is an inhuman farce and a grotesque debacle.

Parents DESERVE paid leave for child rearing. Perhaps the idiot-GOP conglomerate of malinformed voters could stop incessantly whining about the destruction of the family unit if we as a society SUPPORTED PARENTS.

I love AOC she represents the best the Democrat party has to offer. I hope she runs for Speaker of House and gets that useless Nancy Pelosi out of there.

You arent asking for 'we as a society' to support parents. In point of fact...we...as in YOU...arent doing **** all. You arent an employer. You arent a job provider. You literally have zero skin in the game. What you ARE doing is what you and people like you ALWAYS do...bitch and whine about how unfair it is that successful people dont do a better job of carrying your ass through life.

she is quite the idealist. I am not against stuff like this per se, but my gut tells me it is not possible to have quite that much paid leave for every family and continue to be fiscally sound as a country...
which we really aren't anyway.

we need to get rid of big money in politics before we can discuss issues like this.

Family paid leave is good m'kay? Specially when somebody else is paying for it.

Actually what we hear is conservative ****nuggets complain about parents not raising their kids right but these same ****nuggets want parents to BOTH work two jobs each. **** those cons and they can burn in hell.

AOC is merely trumpeting the leftist argument that other people (employers) are to make up for parental stupidity. If at age 26 (the average age of motherhood), a dual income can't handle one of the parents being unpaid for a measly 6 months, then there needs to be some kind of financial literacy program implemented.

Just more incentive to contract out work for US Based businesses overseas. Companies don't exist for Employees, they exist to provide a ROI to those who have a vested economic interest in the endeavour. The more stupid mandates from Government the more incentive there is to ship jobs offshore.

Federal worker paternal leave was worth **** until the Democrats inserted a rule into the new $738 billion 2020 defense funding bill.

Now federal workers will get 12 weeks of paternal leave.

well that ROI depends on the US consumer markets, so if they want to ship out overseas they will should pay tarriffs to have access to said market.

they get quite a good ROI being US companies, they can afford to give paid leave. not saying as much as AOC wants, but lets be real, companies do have an investment to make for using the infrastructure and markets we create for them as consumers.

it can't all be for the businesses either. that is why our corporate environment is getting more and more screwed up. if we are going to a corporatist authoritarian state, I'd rather tear it all down now, instead of allow for a corporate hegemony.

Great. So no one would hire women under age 55.

Maybe people could refrain from having kids until they can AFFORD to take some time off.

Yeess.

While I can appreciate and agree that new parents should have more paid leave, I can also appreciate the concerns a business would have.

My solution would be to have companies up their leave time but also have a cap on leave. Example would be companies are required to offer 20 weeks, but no more. So if you’re planning on 2 kids you can split it on 2 10 week leaves. If you plan for 3 kids you can use it for 3 6 weeks. If you plan on being one blow it all in one shot. But once you’re out you will not get any more paid leave.

would it be easier to stomach if they did not take it all in one shot? such as perhaps they can take the first 6-8 weeks when baby is born then a week on a week off, then at some point days off on and off , so they can keep going on projects and such and still spend time with the child regularly, out to whatever the maximum would be?

It's great. We have decent parental leave system here, 158 weekdays and when you are home with child you get 341,06€ / month (until child is 3 years old) as home care support, some places (like in capital city) you get additional money as municipal supplement (from 120€ / month to 264€ / month) - all funded by taxation. Guess what, Finland + some socialism = NOT Venezuela. Surprised?

No wonder why we pay so much taxes xD But we're not blaming that system as every household with children benefits from it.

AOC isn't stupid, she is just progressive. Maybe things like that are stupid in US?

How early do children go into full-time daycare? What percentage of mothers stay at home and raise their own kids?

Sounds like they got a good thing going. How many kids do you think they could eventually pop out?

It's <1% of mothers who go to work when child is under 1 year old. From all mothers, 74% are working (not at home with children), so 26% stay at home.

I don't understand what the negatives are for this other than the misinformed stating companies and/or the government will pay for this.
I will give you an example I earned 25 paid weeks of leave at my last job that was earned no one gave me anything. About the same time companies were starting to cut back on paid leave on the books because it was a liability.
Okay fine pay me my money....well nope I was told I could do one of 2 things take 1/2 pay for 600 hours or lose it.
They failed to tell me if I quit they would have to give me all 800 plus hours. I found out before I would lose it all or get 1/2 pay. So I quit took my 800 hour check and started a business.
I know many young people can't even contemplate having that many hours on the books because companies no longer allow you to accrue that type of money in the bank. However it used to happen.
Maybe just maybe this family leave thing wouldn't be such a problem if we went back to doing things the way we used to.
But of course we have to defend all corporate decisions in this new world we live in where corps are more important than people.

Actually what we hear is conservative ****nuggets complain about parents not raising their kids right but these same ****nuggets want parents to BOTH work two jobs each. **** those cons and they can burn in hell.

They're worth nothing. Job creators act like everyone owes them something. Vance? I'd reply to him directly, but his personal attacks aren't worth my time.

He claims none of us have "skin in the game."

This is a symbiotic relationship, something ingrates should learn; without ME and those like ME, they're worth nothing. I PAY my taxes. They get subsidies. WITHOUT those they don't open shop. Without labor, they create nothing.

They are the most entitled, worthless batch of whiney demagogues this side of the pond.

I think it's 2-3, but now we have also lot of couples without children so average size for family is 2,75 persons.
