More than 500 law professors say Trump committed ‘impeachable conduct’

More than 500 legal scholars have signed on to an open letter asserting that President Trump committed “impeachable conduct” and that lawmakers would be acting well within their rights if they ultimately voted to remove him from office. The signers are law professors and other academics from universities across the country, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Michigan and many others. The open letter was published online Friday by the nonprofit advocacy group Protect Democracy. “There is overwhelming evidence that President Trump betrayed his oath of office by seeking to use presidential power to pressure a foreign government to help him distort an American election, for his personal and political benefit, at the direct expense of national security interests as determined by Congress,” the group of professors wrote. “His conduct is precisely the type of threat to our democracy that the Founders feared when they included the remedy of impeachment in the Constitution.” Those who signed on to the letter said they “take no position on whether the President committed a crime. But conduct need not be criminal to be impeachable,” the group of professors wrote. “Impeachment is a remedy for grave abuses of the public trust.”

The group noted in particular that Trump’s conduct seemed to be directed at affecting the results of the 2020 election, and thus it was not a matter that could be left to voters at the polls. The impeachment inquiry has focused on what Democratic lawmakers say were Trump’s efforts to pressure his Ukrainian counterpart to announce an investigation into a potential 2020 rival, former vice president Joe Biden, in exchange for a White House meeting and the release of hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid. Trump has rejected Democrats’ allegation that he engaged in any sort of corrupt quid pro quo. “Put simply, if a President cheats in his effort at re-election, trusting the democratic process to serve as a check through that election is no remedy at all,” the professors wrote. “That is what impeachment is for.”

As the 500 professors write, what Donald Trump did vis-a-vis Ukraine is precisely what the founding fathers had in mind when they inserted the Impeachment remedy in the US Constitution.

Yeah, but what does Bill Barr say? You know, the completely impartial and independent US AG?

Apparently those 500 aren't interested in a gig on Fox News.

Their loss.

How many of the 500 professors you think hate Trump because he's an alpha male and they're not?

All the law professors in the world could testify to tRumps conduct being impeachable, it would not matter because Republican Representatives and Senators decided LOOOOOOOOOONG ago that they would protect him.

And why BECAUSE the are paying back their rich donors who, though they initially were against tRump, have now decided that tRump is just the con-artist to help the install and imperial pResidency, that will do their bidding. Essentially giving them, the Oligarchs, control of our country.

500 professors? You might as well say a million. The right-wing doesn't trust educated opinion. In fact, their trust of something is inversely proportionate to the amount of learned people who endorse it.

Now if Alex Jones or Sean Hannity say it, then you're cooking with fire.

500 lawyers? Sounds like a lawyer joke, you know, the one that ends with "a good start".

Aw, what do a bunch of law professors know anyway? They probably couldn't find their way out of a paper bag. :wink2:

Big surprise... a bunch of liberal professors don't like Trump.

I watch the hearings from time to time and have seen nothing but he said/he said arguments...

Seems like a big waste of time so far...

It doesn't matter for conservatives, because they will just keep moving the goalposts concern what they are willing to accept as evidence.

Next thing you'll say is that a bunch of scientists got together and wrote a letter about Global Warming...

On other words, not insecure about the size of their hands.

Global warming now there's a term I haven't heard in a long time. That's it blame Trump for global warming and polar bears drowning in the Arctic Ocean. There may be hope for defeating him yet.

That's a ridiculous argument. The 500 were not all anti-Trumpers or all Democrats. I would challenge the right to refute the opinions of 500 legal minds by presenting 500 solely republican legal minds that would argue their legal points which are aligned with constitutional law.

Could you give an example of this he said/she said?

I'm thinking, one week the GOP says Trump didn't offer a quid pro quo and the next week they say he did, but its okay.

But that's more like a he said/he said.

Took some digging, but per the ABA there were over 8,000 law professors employed full time by law schools in the US as of 2008. Why should anyone care that 500 signed a form letter?

Trump very well may have committed an impeachable offense. For me having 500 lawyers say he did is like the 3000 claimed architects and engineers on the AE911Truth site who believe Gage in that the twin towers and building 7 were all brought down by controlled demolition.

I would want to know the political leanings of those 500 lawyers.

Random 500 solely not Trump hating liberal college professors. We get it.

I could give a bunch but I am not going to waste my time arguing the stupidity of this issue.

But that's more like a he said/he said.

That is why I said he said/he said...

You somehow "know" the 500 professors are liberals? Geezus lol, your smear talents are approaching those of Giuliani.
