I wasn't aware about Biden's stuttering problem, I think he does very well considering he's having to deal with this condition while speaking in public. I admire him for doing so well, and having strong enough shoulders to bear all the criticism he's had now and as a child.

What Joe Biden Can’t Bring Himself to Say

His verbal stumbles have voters worried about his mental fitness. Maybe they’d be more understanding if they knew he’s still fighting a stutter.

A stutter does not get worse as a person ages, but trying to keep it at bay can take immense physical and mental energy. Biden talks all day to audiences both small and large.

In addition to periodically stuttering or blocking on certain sounds, he appears to intentionally not stutter by switching to an alternative word—a technique called “circumlocution”—*which can yield mangled syntax.

I’ve been following practically everything he’s said for months now, and sometimes what is quickly characterized as a memory lapse is indeed a stutter. As Eric Jackson, the speech pathologist, pointed out to me, during a town hall in August Biden briefly blocked on Obama, before quickly subbing in my boss. The headlines after the event? “Biden Forgets Obama’s Name.” Other times when Biden fudges a detail or loses his train of thought, it seems unrelated to stuttering, like he’s just making a mistake. The kind of mistake other candidates make too, though less frequently than he does.

Why, after 40 years in public service, hasn’t this become common knowledge much sooner?

Biden, like many demorats as of late, is primarily struggling to appear "woke" and to convince folks that he (and therefore his policy positions) supports the black community, the LBGTQ community, the "working class" community and every other identity group separately imaginable. Why not just drop that "special" community pandering nonsense and try to convince the electorate that he (and therefore his policy positions) are "best" for everyone?

When Biden said "only" and then, seconds later, insisted that he had, in fact, said "first" that was simply straight up (Trump like?) lying. How hard is it to say "Whoops, I meant to say first" instead of lying and asserting that "I said first"? That is one thing which I absolutely can't stand about Trump - he simply refuses to admit having any personal short comings or making (accidental?) misstatements of fact. For Biden to show us that he is different from (better than?) Trump the surest way to do so is for him not to act like Trump.

Excellent point!

Is this a clever attempt to have people feel sympathy for Vice President Biden so that they cease their mockery of his verbal missteps?

After all, most decent people have been taught to be as kind as possible to people with disabilities.

I've long felt that politicians having a 'lapse of memory' gets way too much criticism. This week I've had more than one occasion where names I know for years can't be recalled - yesterday, I couldn't recall trump's chief of staff's name, though I've long known it is Mulvaney, which I didn't look up but recalled as I type this. That would have 'looked bad' if I was seen forgetting it yesterday.

Just because someone is a practiced speaker who, for example, can handle those lapses better - even trump has some skill at it, he has a technique where he just keeps talking as if he said the right thing and will add the right thing if he remembers it - might be nice, but it's less important than what they support.

Not many know how 'good speakers' often develop the talent.

JFK is considered one of our best speakers; he used to play recordings of Winston Churchill and try to copy him to be able to speak better. Even newscasters tend to have a sort of 'special speaking style' to give them an appearance of being knowledgeable as they talk, that isn't how most people talk, but it doesn't make what they say right or wrong.

And it's not just one approach. Politicians often try to sound INFORMAL to be more appealing- like when Bush would intentionally mispronounce 'nuclear' as 'nookyoulur', and then use liberals criticizing him for it to rally his supporters against the 'elitists'. And Bernie doesn't seem to try to have any 'speaking style', it's a bit like his hair, gruff.

Yep, there must be something offered to couterbalance Joe Biden's status as an old, privieged, rich white man in the party for "diversity". ;)

Biden stutters!

THAT'S why he fondles women & children.

And now his bizarre behavior can't be criticized.

Because bigotry.

Too bad it isn't what you said it is.

How Joe Biden Helped a Man With a Childhood Stutter Overcome His Fears | Time

Actually, it's Trump who enjoys making fun of people with disabilities. Yes, Trump isn't decent - I agree.

BIdens issue isnt stuttering, its his memory. His mind is clearly going.

I have respect and admiration for these men and all those who have worked so hard to cope with their stuttering, my heart goes out to all afflicted with this condition.

I am on the autism spectrum as an Aspie and I had to deal with a lunker case of Tourettes for most of my childhood and adult life.
I won't go into chapter and verse on how I've fixed it enough to have a normal life, but I still do occasional voiceover work on commercials, and I did spend six months working as a radio announcer till I got sick of starving and switched to film editing instead.

Believe me, the radio deejay thing was pathetic.
KCHK New Prague Minnesota, an AM polka station.
My hair dryer had more power than their transmitter.
Part time, the money was hideously bad, I made more money as a part time dishwasher at a greasy spoon diner.

Every once in a while, if I am really really fatigued and under a ton of stress, the Tourettes creeps out and you'll see a facial tic or a muttered vocalization from me. It's a sign that it's time for me to have a nice bong hit and/or take a nap.
It's rare, but in my childhood it was a 24-7-365 nightmare.

I even finally wrote a poem about it.
Of course by that point my Tourettes had already long since receded into the background (1992)
but it wasn't a challenge remembering what it felt like to have Tourettes.

"T.S., Hold the Elliot"

My Maker has fashioned his chains for me.
My worship is guttural, unnatural, vulgar.
I ride a hellion to work and back.
On display for commuters.
I mutter, stutter, genuflect.
I am an army of one in a war of words that I wish not to say.
Flooding thoughts, thoughts of floods, having not the guts to stay.
A rampant virus of Billy Ray Cyrus, achy breaky, silicone snaky.
I worship unwillingly at the altar of Dostoevsky and Saint Vitus.
My Gods are personal and private demons, Ancient porno hymnals.
Flame of fury, fashioned from flailing.
I cry tears of bitter rage when I am alone,
Set me free...

LOL, seems a little bit on the maudlin side, seeing it now almost thirty years later but
I enjoyed writing it.
It felt therapeutic putting it into words. :)

Thanks for sharing your story and poem CS....much respect my friend.

A debate featuring Trump vs. Biden? Do i need to tell you the results? All I can say is, Trump, unlike the Dem candidates in their debates, will show no mercy. It will be ridiculously easy to crush Biden like a bug.

How much experience do you have with bullies?

You really don't get it, do you?

Strength and power are different things.

My God, you people are sick. You think these assholes like Putin and Kim and the Iranians respond to PC bull****? That's why it's terrifying to think you could gain power.

Bullies? This is a Presidential election. Do you want a weak dog in that office? Bullies? Is this the effing 8th grade?

Now I wonder why you associate bullies with grammar school only, as if adults are incapable of carrying such personality flaws throughout their life.
How strange that you apparently live in a world so binary that the only choices you can see are (A) weak and ineffectual versus (B) a bully, which according to your response, signifies strength.

Apparently "walk softly and carry a big stick" is utterly lost on you.

Like a dog chasing a car, not many of them would know what to do with power once they acquire it.
