Considering the political cravenness of most GOP members of Congress and the unwavering support of Republicans in polls, it seems like a fair question. We've all seen supposed leaders of the party like Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have their families, wives, and manhood questioned by Trump, only to line up to carry water for him. Even more moderate Republicans such as Will Hurd, a man who is leaving office next year, is apparently so terrified of angering Trump that he is defending him against blatantly corrupt behavior. We see rubes line up at rallies across the nation with their silly red hats to chant the usual inane slogans. And literally nothing the man does seems to matter to any of them.
Former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt posed the following questions on Twitter.
Steve Schmidt on Twitter: "I can’t stop wondering how many GOP members of Congress would raise their hand willingly to take an oath of absolute obedience and loyalty to Donald Trump. How many at a Trump rally? How many millions across the country? Illiberal cults of personality usually end badly."
Some might find it silly, but it's hard to think of what we are witnessing as anything other than a cult. Trump insults disabled people. They cheer. He mocks the heroism of a crippled veteran. They cheer. He cheats on his wife with multiple porn stars and models. They not only cheer, but call him some sort of Christian messiah. He brags about forcing himself on women. Between cheers they simply refer to it as "locker room talk" all men engage in. He calls for locking up his political rivals and murdering whistle blowers. They cheer. He praises dictators who butcher their own people while condemning liberal allies. They cheer. He attempts to force a desperate foreign ally into making up an investigation into a political rival and announcing it in a CNN interview. They cheer. He lies to them 13.5 times a day. They cheer.
We are told that law enforcement can do nothing about him.
Special counsels can't even accuse him of wrongdoing, let alone seek indictments.
Any Congressional oversight is blocked and called a coup attempt.
So, what is the inevitable conclusion when tens of millions of people and essentially all of the leaders of a party become so wholly invested in one utterly horrible human being?
