'Slave for sale,' Craigslist post: teen is accused of a hate crime, police say - CNN

More racial harmony 'promotion' from our friends at CNN by pointing out specific and superficial incidents, which defines to the rest of us what racism is supposed to mean. I can understand that what happened was wrong, however the leftist concept of how racism is expressed, and what it means at its core, is incorrect.

First, let's take a look at the environment where this incident took place:

Statistics / Naperville Central Statistics

general_performance.JPG

It's a high performing school, with high expectations for the students in general. As with all things government, we have racial information as to which races attend the school:

racial_makeup.JPG

Blacks make up only 4% of the school. What good is government-contrived racial information without pointing out academic performance by race? Here it is:

racial_performance.JPG

For good measure, the stats include those students on IEP's. An IEP is a specific plan for a student with special education needs. Performance-wise, the black students of the school have similar rankings to the IEP students.

Now, the big question is why the black students are vastly underperforming - barely above the IEP students. CNN would have us believe that it's because a kid called another kid a 'slave'. Perhaps there's a confederate statue within sight of the school that has to be taken down. Then there was that really mean white guy in Charlottesville that ran over people. Then there's Trump and Russia or Ukraine or Stormy Daniels or whatever.

Another option: An excuse for poor performance by minorities has always been a lack of resources. It could be that Naperville hands out brand new books to the white kids, but only gives scrap paper to the black kids. Perhaps the white kids at Naperville get taught in climate-controlled, well-lit classrooms, but Naperville sends all the black kids to the dark, dank and cold basement for their classes.

The previous paragraph isn't far from the mark as to the true core of what racism is and how it's manifested. The 'lack of resources' in reality isn't physical, but has everything to do with expectations and lack of esteem. In the mind of the entire school - the teachers, the students, the parents - no matter their race - they all have lower expectations for the black students. A massive, pervasive issue reduced to a soundbite ("slave for sale") by CNN.

Where’s the crime?

Unless there’s more to the story, this sounds like a frivolous prosecution. Posting “offensive” things on the internet isn’t illegal in America.

I'm not sure this evens arises to harassment.

Things must be slow for the Naperville PoPo...

Do you have statistics on the average household income of the parents of the children going to school in Naperville? I'm going to go out on a limb and assume the black parents are fairly poor as compared to many of the other races.

I also notice that in your charts it says that 16% of the school is Asian. Yet it doesn't have their percentile scores. Are they being classified as white?

Neither of my parents went to college or at least not for a bachelor's degree. When I grew up I didn't care much for school or take my grades too seriously. I was more of a jock who focused on sports and tried to fit in with the cool guys who sat in the back of the room and horsed around. It wasn't really until I made friends with a new kid that moved to school and started hanging around with more of the smarter nerdier kids in school that I suddenly started taking my education more seriously.

Imagine if you have an environment where the poorer African American children who attend the school don't feel welcomed by the rest of the class. Where they tend to get isolated into a group with nothing but other poorer African American students and how that might impact their education.

"Slave for sale?" In modern times? What does he think this is...Africa? North Korea? Asia?

To think...up until about 10 years ago, race relations in this country were actually improving significantly.

Oh, Im sure it does. Im not sure that an arrest is warranted but its certainly harassment and should require an atonement.

This is one of those times where we used to see it as maybe an opportunity to grow, to heal, maybe even have those two work things out. The way things are now, they will probably handle it in a way that whatever racist ideation the 14 year old has will be cemented.

This is from Washington State, but I presume Illinois has similar laws on the books.

Is Verbal Abuse Considered a Form of Assault? Assault Legal Questions & Answers

Sec. 1 RCW 9A.36.080 and 2009 c 180 s 1 are each amended to read as
follows:

(1) A person is guilty of malicious harassment if he or she
maliciously and intentionally commits one of the following acts because
of his or her perception of the victim's race, color, religion,
ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or mental,
physical, or sensory handicap:

a) Causes physical injury to the victim or another person;

(b) Causes physical damage to or destruction of the property of the
victim or another person; or

(c) Threatens a specific person or group of persons and places that
person, or members of the specific group of persons, in reasonable fear of
harm to person or property. The fear must be a fear that a reasonable
person would have under all the circumstances.

If you read further there is generally a high bar for this type of thing, but I'd say treating to sell a black child in to slavery could meet that bar.

Depends. Some States have cyber bullying statutes. I think Illinois is one of them.

It's nice that white, conservative men believe themselves the arbiters of what constitute healthy race relations in America.

I wonder when slavery would have ended had it been up to them? When the Civil Rights Act would have been passed? When the decriminalization of interracial relationships would have finally occurred?

Well, we don’t have to ask those questions. The only question relevant today is: when will people relearn how to navigate the world without constant positive affirmation of their existence from strangers? Liberals took it too far when they made it a crime to hurt people’s feelings.

Do you believe it is normal, acceptable behavior for a young black man to have his picture posted online under the words "Slave for sale"?

No. I also don’t think mere bruised egos or tears are appropriate matters for the criminal justice system to handle. Do you think we should be sending people to jail because their words make you sad? Are your personal feelings really worthy of incarceration?

I think that a growing trend on the right has been to look at any who speak out against hate and label them as some kind of weak individual. A "snowflake" being the more frequently used term.

Do I think a kid should do hard time for making a really offensive online post? Probably not. Should there be serious repercussions including suspension, expulsion, or juvenile law enforcement options? Quite possibly. It was a vile thing to do to a black child and something one should certainly know better than to engage in by the time they are 14.

And perhaps it’s true that there is a growing population of people on the left who cannot function as human beings if exposed to even the most minor criticism. After all, we need “safe spaces” now to shield them from their own neuroses. But the larger issue is whether or not criminalizing the hurting of feelings is a proper function of government. I don’t believe that it is.

I'd guess that the Asians are being classified as white, but I can't be sure.

Threatening to hold a slave auction isn’t anywhere in the ballpark of a “credible threat”.

Depends. Some States have cyber bullying statutes. I think Illinois is one of them.

Hopefully this becomes a test case if so. Illinois wouldn’t be the first state to have a “cyberbullying” statute struck down for vagueness/1A.

So you're okay with someone taking a picture of your kid and posting it online, telling that your kid is for sale?

Oh god. Your post is so cringy.

Is your goal is to try to make people cringe more and more?

Your assumption that I care is precious. Not everyone has an existential nervous breakdown at the thought of an internet rando not liking what they say.
