That's my characterization, but it's beautifully explained here what should concern any person of integrity that this propaganda wing of the GOP does nightly

"If I were to run, I'd run as a Republican. They're the dumbest group of voters in the country. They love anything on Fox News. I could lie to them and they will lap it up. Bet my numbers would be terrific." Trump quoted on People Magazine 1998.

That was debunked. However, he did refer to his base as poorly educated, and said that's why he loved them.

Donald Trump declares 'I love the poorly educated'

And based on his campaign strategy, he believes they are largely cowardly racists.

Trump’s Midterm Closing Argument: Pure Racial Fear

So never said "they're the dumbest group of voters in the country." He did say they're poorly educated, and spent his money trying to energize a bunch of cowardly racists.

Christ, if I was a Trump supporter, I think I would prefer the People mag quote to what he says about them today. :lamo

I find the fact that John Solomon was dropped like 10 mies of bad road by The Hill after his absurd and constant hatching of CT's was then picked off the scrap heap by Fox News stunning and says just about everything about Fox News that matters. Combine that with Shep Smith leaving Fox News and I think it is safe to say, "Houston, we have a problem".

That said, how can Americans be so obliviously dedicated to garbage TV and laughably absurd editorialization cloaked as something approaching News is almost incomprehensible to me. Watch if you wish but realize you are watching entertainment programing for most of the Fox News day.

These are the same people who probably think Dukes of Hazzard was reality tv. Then again the characters were so dumb that they likely saw in them their own reflection...

1. I am very grateful that FOX NEWS exists.

2. I no longer pay much attention to the news, but everyday I check out FOX for a few minutes.

a. It is the only network that has the guts to report politically incorrect news, which the liberal media ignore or downplay.

3. When the Dems seize the government in January, 2021, I hope that they will not close down FOX.

4. Of course, I never deign to watch CNN or MSNBC (which gives time to a reverend who makes $1,000,000 a year from his own organization).

As Justhanging pointed out, that's one of those false quotes that says something that's basically true, but was not said by the person, just would fit well if it had, and is more accurate than what they DO say.

And Rush Limbaugh.

Hell, Limbaugh and Hannity have lied so much that it's ripped our country to pieces.

You know FOX news is right over the target when breathless thread after breathless thread gets started about them!
I think they do protest too much...and definitely watch a lot more FOX than Trump supporters!

I bet they are all on drugs too, just like Trump, and he sprinkles pixie dust in their cofveve every morning like clockwork.
His secret agent at the network is also embedding subliminal messages. Slow play the feed and you will see it clear as day.

Hell, Limbaugh and Hannity have lied so much that it's ripped our country to pieces.

Can't stand the fact that there are alternatives to the other liars? Hint, use the on off button. Isn't America great?

Wait, you want to single out the LEFT for big money faux preachers? Really? That gets you an irony of the day award. The Christian fascist movement is quite real and large, and Republicans practically have an exclusive on the politicization of religion for the most crass, evil politics. For Democrats, it's mostly, care about people, e.g., feed the hungry - and civil rights, e.g., don't harm people treating them as second-class for things like race.

As for the rest of your post.

When a propaganda organization targets people to manipulate and misinform them in ways bad for them, the ironic thing is how much the people who fall for it defend the propagandists.

The Fox viewers pretty much don't care if they're lied to, misled, and have a lot omitted from their news, all they care about is being told what they want to hear, and they are "very grateful that FOX NEWS exists."

In addition to Fox being Roger Ailes dream since the 1960's of "GOP TV", a secondary reason for the propaganda is simply business - to try to break into a crowded market of journalism telling the truth similarly to each other, they offer something 'different' that says 'all the others are lying', just to create a market. It's exposed a real problem gullibility by a lot of Americans.

Honestly, if you are tuned into any of the big corporate news networks, you are being duped. I no longer consider these networks as part of the 5th Estate. They are business firms making money off of salaciousness and sensationalism. It has nothing to do with quality journalism.

Fox News is definitely the worst of them. They crossed the line into demagoguery a long time ago. Because they rebranded their network as "entertainment" in the early 2000's, they are allowed to outright lie and not be taken to task. There was a time in America when if a news network was caught lying, it would be a news story in of itself. Now it's just business as usual because hyperpartisans will support lies if it means getting the upper hand.

Our country is in a very sorry state. I don't watch the news networks for the reasons already mentioned, and because it's utterly depressing to see how low our country has sunk. We now tolerate evil as part of our every day existence.

Your first point has more than a little truth to it, but is overstated. Mainstream news tends to get the facts it DOES report right; the problems are in corporate bias shown in emphasis, spin, and omission mostly, e.g. adopting a "far left" label for any candidate who supports FDR type policies, or not covering them, and chasing ratings. I agree about Fox; but there are great sources out there, more than ever before, if people look for them.

Try commondreams.org for good commentary on issues and news, and for news, sources such as the newer Vox and The Intercept, as well as Rachel Maddow, who might have some blind spots on MSNBC, but has excellent reporting on what she covers.

I think the real enemy of the people are all three cable news networks which has taken sides in our political battles instead of just reporting on them. I understand how Democrats, liberals, progressives think Fox is the demon, also how Republicans and conservatives view CNN and MSNBC as the devil in the house. Not to mention the pro and anti Trumpers. Now one must remember these networks are corporation owned, in the news business to make money. To do that they must keep their viewers happy in order to keep them glued to the tube and obtain new viewers. Each network viewers want their news to suit their political ideology, to reinforce if you will the viewers view of the world of politics. All three accomplish this by giving the viewer what it wants in the way the viewer wants it.

Trust in the mass media has hit a record low. Down to 32% of all Americans who trust the media to report the news in a fair, accurate, full manner. It's interesting to note that in 1976 72% of all Americans trust the media to report the news fully, fairly and accurately. Then came the advent of CNN and cable news. That trust fell into the 50's during Bill Clinton, down into the 40's in the last year or so of Bush and through Obama, now at 32%.

Americans' Trust in Mass Media Sinks to New Low

This goes to prove that we Americans, those who are political minded want their news in a manner that shows the other guy, the other party as rats while reinforcing our guy and party as the good guys in the white hat fighting for truth, justice and the American way. You get exactly that on Fox, CNN and MSNBC.

This is one of those posts that gets some details right (e.g., the problem of much of the news having to place ratings above quality), while getting the larger points wrong (e.g., false 'both sides are the same' implied equivalency.) The quality in AVAILABLE news (see my mentions in above post) has greatly increased to an all-time high, while the quality of the most popular news has issues.

That's my characterization, but it's beautifully explained here what should concern any person of integrity that this propaganda wing of the GOP does nightly

Georgiana Platt on Twitter: "Don't think I have ever been on a flight when EVERYONE is watching the same thing (except long ago, when you had no choice) #ImpeachmentHearing #constanttraveler #friendlyskies #ambassadoryovanovitch… https://t.co/WSkk16GJeQ"

Any "mature" American should, IMHO, be very interested in these hearings. This is the Constitution in action, implementing it's remedies against tyranny. The tyranny of a despot or the defense of honorable leader against false accusation. Our founders implemented impeachment as a civilized way to deal with a self dealing leader and/or the defense of a righteous one. Franklin noted that their only other example went back to the way Romans and Greeks disposed of their leaders.

However these hearings turn out, the WILL affect how we go forward as a Nation … or possibly … don't.

The equivalency issue is one in my opinion that is determined by one's political view point. I'm not a party animal and am neither a pro or anti Trumper. But I certainly can see the three cable networks pushing their political view, agenda even, from a political party's and a pro or anti Trump view point.

It's gotten so bad that I rarely turn on cable news anymore. Preferring to do research on the internet on subjects and issues of importance to me. From what I seen, with Trump on cable news, CNN and MSNBC want him gone, Fox wants him to stay. That's in line with how the two major parties view him. 81% of democrats want Trump impeached and removed, 82% of Republican's don't. Questions 15 and 16.

https://d25d2506sfb94s.cloudfront.net/cumulus_uploads/document/7umtlf80ov/econTabReport.pdf

It is my opinion that the cable news networks have become arms or wings of our two major parties. They're not the place to go if you want accurate, fair, and full reporting of our political news. They are, however, the place to go to get your news in the manner and from the proper ideology perspective you hold. One way or the other.

I think we delved back into time, back to the 1800's when each party had their own newspapers. Today, it is cable news networks.

I see we have one vote to repeal the first Amendment.

When news became a source of revenue for broadcasters, is when America lost the 5th estate

Back in the 70's, the big 3 networks ran all of their news programs as losses....they knew that it was imperative to get the news to America, but profit was not ever in the discussion.

Cronkite, Brinkley, and the others like them were the most trusted men in America. They provided the facts of the news, and let the viewers think for themselves what it might mean to THEM.

At the end of each nightly broadcast, their was maybe a minute to minute and half op-ed piece, and it was always listed as such on one thing or another.

I think in 1979, Ted Turner created CNN 24 news network, and the news world was turned on its ear. Suddenly news was available earlier, so the networks no longer had the same viewership. And CNN began making money, and the race to profits began.

Almost 40 years later, we are left with entertainment, not news. Pundits telling us what to think about everything happening....not just telling us the facts, and letting US sort it out. And every station you watch slants it in one way or another....leaving out something, or adding in something else....it is total bull****

I want the NEWS....who, what, where, how, when, and if known, the WHY....i will make my own determination on what it means, and how it affects me or what i need to think about it.

Give me Walter Cronkite back....crusty old cronkite who just gave us the facts

Well let's see.

The highest rated shows on Fox News, of any kind and format, reach about 3-5 million viewers, depending on current events.

At present, the liberal MSM networks (ABC, NBC, CBS News) reach @ 15-20 million combined, depending on current events.

Liberal fake news cable (CNN, MSNBC, etc.) reach about 3-5 million combined.

Add in the circulation and website visits for WaPo, NYT, LAT, etc., and you reach another 10-15 million.

So as it is, Fox News reaches about 1/10th the audience of the rest of the liberal fake news media the public views.

And Fox News is the enemy of the people...…

Bull****.

The enemy of the people is the liberal MSM news complex, and proof of that is their indoctrinated acolytes creating threads like this one.

Can't stand the fact that there are alternatives to the other liars? Hint, use the on off button. Isn't America great?

well, Rush and Sean are a special kind of liar (much like Donald Trump).

Rush, after he dropped out of college in 1971 was then fired by WIXZ in 1973 and then was fired by KQV-AM in 1974 so he went back to living with his mom and dad. that's when he moved to Missouri and started his Morton Downey Jr similar thing. He was fired from that job too but they gave him another chance and then fired him again.

you probably remember all that. his name was "Bachelor Jeff" Christie. so when he decided to be Rush Limbaugh he got a job at KMBZ-AM and then they fired him too. Then he actually did replace the actual Morton Downey Jr at KFBK-AM. That's when the lies really started. He can say whatever he wants, since he's not a journalist, and doesn't have to issue any retractions to all his lies. That's the magic.

Sean and much of the rest of the Republican media jumped on that very successful model (which wraps what we learned in church (fight the devil to the death), people's fear of those that are different (black, brown, gay, happy) and constant lies) into one nice, neat broadcasting lying machine.

It's really a shame that their listeners aren't savvy enough to know when they're being lied to AND that they will just leave a ton of facts out to make their point (that is their most effective way of lying) and it's all to make huge money (Rush called himself a failure and was desperate for $$$) and now he no longer has that fear of failure.

Rush showed them the lying model, all the others just jumped on it and cashed in and ruined our country. If you don't believe me, watch this board for the next week and see how many facts are left out by Limbaugh/Hannity listeners.

All of this was vastly accelerated when Reagan repealed the fairness Doctrine
