A look inside the mind of a leftist

I don't think liberals & progressives are so much distancing themselves from Jane, as that she is not very relevant, at her age. It's been many years since she sat on a US bomb in Hanoi. Many younger people barely know who she is or what she did. I like the term progressive rather than liberal, as most young progressives are passionate about keeping the Earth livable (environment & government).

No, you are passionate about thinking you can keep the earth livable. Have you given up driving a car? Flying in planes? Have you stopped heating or air conditioning your home?

My guess is you are passionate about keeping your physically easy modern lifestyle, while preaching and judging others who aren't much worse than you.

And, by the way, as I said before, you are a nasty age bigot.

Jane Fonda is old history. She's like 80 years old. Who cares what she thinks. Everyone is an individual in their beliefs.

IMHO, differences have a lot to do with basic psychology, left vs. right brain function (creative vs. stayed/immobile). If you want to know what liberals don't want, watch "A handmade's tale." It's from a book that came out over 20 year's ago.

I heard a young woman speak who was raised in a extreme right wing climate. She started a career working with a group that helped the poor. Gradually her belief system began to change. Some of us want to leave a positive impact after we're gone.

I have 4 kids all in their 20's, I promise you not a single 1 of them know who Jane Fonda is.

The purpose of this thread is not to mock or belittle anyone. Its my attempt to put some of the things we wrestle with into perspective from the lefts point of view.

This morning im watching something called the impeachment show on viceland. Jane fonda is interviewed on the show. The whole clip is about 8 minutes long and its interesting.

The part that inspired me to create this thread is at about the 5:30 mark where she talks about her strategy but honestly the whole thing is fascinating.

A quick summary of the clip:

It starts off showing what she does as an activist and she espouses the typical urgency about climate change. Cookie cutter stuff mostly. Until about the 5:30 mark where she talks about a plan to seduce Trumps ego into getting onboard with the changes she wants. Then she goes on to explain why impeaching him is so important.

There is a devout sincerity to her that i dont think can be denied and something that many on the left have in common with her.

Anyhow i hope you all enjoy it.

I would say this says more about the mind of Jane Fonda, tbh

But yes, I generally believe we are taxing our planet's capacity to support life at the current technology/population. My ultimate goal (and I don't think this is a liberal position as much as a tacomancer position) is that I want humanity to last forever and spread throughout the galaxy, so lets not cripple our ability to do so.

One of the problems of "how liberals think" is that one of the few commonalities is that liberals tend not to care about how other liberals think or care if there is some shared cultural or political understanding. We believe what we believe as individuals and count it as serendipity that we happen to have allies. That makes it very hard to make a template.

What i found fascinating was her tatics. She has an ends justify the means mentality in her approach. She was endorsing dishonesty for the purpose of advancing her agenda.

Admittedly i am blinded by my own prejudices no matter how hard i try not to be. Its something endemic to everyone to one degree or another, but i try to resist that temptation where as she seems to embrace it.

I feel like the many people who hold disdain for Trump are not really concerned if the impeachment charges are credible as much as they see it as an opprotunity to remove him and therefor are willing to overlook if they are not.

Personally, i tend to not be an ends justify the means type of person, but my POV on the idea of using our foreign policy for personal political gain is something that disgusts me, so in that vein, I think there is a genuine problem to investigate here. I would feel the same no matter the politician. I personally dislike Trump because I see him as emotionally unfit for the office, but I also know that much of the country appreciates that type of directness, so it resonates with them.

Ultimately I think its a question of character. The right tends to view Trump as having some and the left tends to view him as having none (due to his problematic behavior as I described), so that perception goes into how much leeway they are willing to give the man. I have many friends of all political stripes, but generally liberals would view someone with Trump's behavior as someone with either something to hide or as someone who is all bark and no bite. We tend to appreciate smoothness and a polished personality as a sign of emotional maturity because it is a sign of emotional mastery.

So if you take a person who has no signs of emotional mastery and you add conflict of interest and selfish behavior, you have a likely criminal or person with a large number of behavioral red flags (again, in terms of perception). Trump fits that archtype to a T.

Little help here please. I could not open the link. Can anyone summarize what she said. As a vague leftist for decades, I’d be interested in how her message might square with what I and friends believe.

I respect where you are coming from. Republicans dont cut democrats any slack and give fellow republicans every benefit of doubt and vice a versa for democrats.

A lot of it is differences in social approach (I grew up in a VERY conservative area and spent my life studying social sciences and just plain observing). Conservatives tend to appreciate emotional and verbal directness. Liberals see that and think "that person might be unstable and are not showing self control". When you have very different basic reactions (and theres a long list of these kinds of opposing reactions), it becomes quite hard to communicate.

Good4nothing, why don't you keep the "nasty" term to yourself. You know nothing about me, nor my lifestyle. As for "age bigot" that I am not. I have valued friends from all age groups, and I am not young.

What tacomancer and trouble 13 are doing is actually having a discussion without name calling...kudos!

Fonda's a liberal, not a leftist.

You said Jane Fonda's opinions should not be respected because she is old. To me, that is nasty.

All I know about Jane Fonda's political views is that she was all for the communists during the Viet Nam war. For me, that's a good enough reason to not respect her opinions. Her age is completely irrelevant and if you are not an age bigot, then why did you mention it? Twice.
