Mitch McConnell was put on notice tonight by the Democrats to prepare for an impeachment trial by Thanksgiving.
I don’t think that’s what happened.
This is a major turning point.
Up till almost that moment, the approved right wing talking point was to goad Democrats in Congress over scheduling a vote to open an impeachment inquiry, dispute there being no requirement to do so at all, and the fact that the GOP didn’t do that during the Clinton impeachment.
It doesn’t mater now.
Brit Hume wrote an item noting that the deposition process that the investigating committees are using to interview the flood of civil servants stepping up to detail the activities of Trump’s henchmen have given them the upper hand.
Until now, the core of the White House strategy has been to use obstruction and stonewalling to keep the Mueller Report off the television screen.
When Rudy Guliani blew open the Ukraine story, that was still the strategy.
And yesterday, stonewalling went as far as the Vice President. This is not a tenable situation. Especially since precident makes it clear that these efforts will fail.
McConnell’s actions yesterday made it clear that they are beating the inevitable retreat.
They have gone from daring the House to hold a vote opening an already ongoing investigation, to laying out how to get through it fast, before the damage gets that much worse.
Delay has switched to haste.
The GOP does not have a viable Presidential candidate without Trump. Should the trial happen in January and early February,as the Clinton impeachment did, we could all be sitting around on the night of the New Hampshire primary watching an Impeachment trial.
Politically, the Democrats have every incentive to delay, and plenty of good reasons to do so.
We will see. All of the investigating committees are facing witnesses that have been told not to testify by the White House. The White House has no legal authority to prevent such testimony, but they have been delaying, hoping litigation over the matter will run the clock out.
Now, they have to clear the log jam if they want to rush the process.
All of these people will be called in a Senate trial, and the trial will proceed at the pace John Roberts sets.
