10/15/19 debate thread

Biden is missing the blindingly obvious: before Trump leaves office, Clarence Thomas is going to step down and let Trump appoint his replacement. And the amazing thing is that Democrats are going to be shocked when it happens.

Yiykes. I do agree with Buttigieg about depoliticizing the SC.

Weak soup.

The Democrats are arguing everything from the emotional sleeve.
Trump bad, guns bad, the economy bad, Trump corrupt. bwahaha

The people who are watching this disaster are saying to themselves, .. Um, I got a better job under Trump, better benefits, my stock portfolio is doing better and I am getting tax breaks. What's to bitch about? Is putting the priorities of Americans first so bad?

Too bad, these desperate foolish Democrats who are trying to sell how bad America is doing are lying to y'all, and I have to say that only the haters are gonna' buy it.

The rest of us, are laughing all the way to the bank.

I don't like Booker one bit. Platitude Central, him...

I like him. He lives in a poor neighborhood. That's not a platitude. All these other politicians get rich and move to some gated community where they become totally disconnected from the reality ordinary people experience.

But he's not doing well here. He's not proposing anything.

Democrats are in a bit of a sticky spot here. They can’t really come out and say “By golly you bet we’re gonna pack the court” because, well...Republicans can do that right now.

I am not sure you can call them truly conservative, but she has backed trump on some issues, and has not backed the democrat party hard line stance on other issues.
Exactly.

Backing Trump =/= conservative principles.

My politics can be pretty liberal at times, but I can reasonably relate to principled conservatives (with the key word being "principled"). But I can't even come close to relating to Trump.

But isn't this what makes the Dems a great party? The diversity of people & ideas?

Hell, I'd love to see more moderates and conservatives mixed in too. The more ideas, the better.
Sure, but once you have two centrists, three liberals, and three progressives, it's times to say "when", and let those who had the confidence from the beginning take the lead.

Could you share some examples?

Gabbard supported trump on syria policy, opposed him on iran policy, opposed trump on gun policy, but backed trump when it came to impeachment hearings, and opposed the democrats logic on impeachment. She also backed many liberal positions on healthcare but has been further away from democrats on immigration policy. You can basically sum her up as not really part of any parties rank and file, she is her own thing, and much like republicans and 2016 hated trump for besting bush, I think democrats hate her for besting harris and possibly making the other candidates look like fools.

Yeah, I was being a little tongue-in-cheek.

But I was on campus one summer a few years ago, and was really surprised by the hard work & conservative ethos I found amongst the students I interacted with. My suspicion though, is that's the way the summer students are - since they are the most motivated. Plus the campus is in the middle of cornfields. You don't go to ND for a social life, unless you're only going to socialize with other Irish.

I'd also like to comment on your liking Kobuchar. It's those Midwest "sensibilities" and pragmaticism. I love those values. The farm life is not for me, but dayem I respect the hell out of those Midwestern farmers making a living off their land. That is the ultimate test of realistic pragmatism. Eke out a living off the land. Bull**** & delusion need not apply!

She was a year behind me in college. I don't recall ever having much interaction with her. I was very active in the political union. I don't recall her being part of that at all, though she was involved in some feminist political group. My college GF was in her class-doesn't recall much of anything about her but a couple people I know were in the same residential college (dorm) as her and said she was smart and well spoken. They seem surprised she got into politics, but then again, I never saw classmate Shannon O'Brien (lost to Romney for Mass. Governor) was going to be political-but then she married into a family that was and the rest they say is history

No, Republicans can't do that.

Oh, Jesus. Damn, Elizabeth.

Thanks for the input.

I am sick of hearing "Thank you Senator" every single time a candidate is getting to the point.
This is an unworkable debate model.
"Senator Thankyou" is becoming the winning candidate.

Yeah, I find I'm liking Booker more than I thought.

Most judges wait until their 80 to retire, so I doubt that he'll do it right now. More likely is that he'll wait for the WH to cycle from Democrat back to Republican, and then step down at that point.

Thomas just looks like he's in his 90's.

No they can't. They need the House.

I like her Blue Democratic Wall and make Donald Trump pay for it. Too bod it didn't get the reaction it deserved. Maybe the delivery.

So, who is the most inspiring candidate? Charisma wins elections.

Why, does that require both chambers of Congress?
Yes.

The House would have to pass a bill expanding the SCOTUS, then the Senate would have to change rules for cloture to a simple majority for legislation defining the judiciary, and then pass the bill themselves.

Truly, a nuclear option.

Guess What?

Guess What?

Joe's go to line.

Sorry Joe.... Lieawatha chosen one
