10/15/19 debate thread

Isn't that what I said?
Yes. But it's a wasted 20%. Government cuts-out the profit, and overhead is far less than private insurers - around 2%. That's 18% we can use for healthcare.

“People say you are too old. What do you say to that?”
“**** you, lady.”

I have to say, I didn't like Biden's dodging the question about his son. He could have easily said that his son is an adult who doesn't work for the government. The "why did you allow your son" question is absurd.

That annoyed me too. His non-answer was too rehearsed and didn't squash the issue as well as it could have.

Hmm... then why is he wasting time running for POTUS with no chance to get the DNC nomination? Could it be that he just wants another federal job to get out of South Bend, IN?
Perhaps he believes his voice should be heard.

Fair enough, in strategic terms. But I'm finding I'm really enjoying this debate. It's a pretty intelligent & civil debate. Maybe I'm just easily impressed, after watching the 2016 Republican debate and Trump & Rudy since then.

Chomsky is easily impressed.

I'm pretty sure I'm writing simply enough for an eighth grader to understand, yet you seem totally dumbstruck? A federal job guarantee is the most idiotic idea I've ever heard.

Awww but I thought you cared about your fellow americans. Ah, well. Guess you'll be voting Republican. Doesnt matter though, your vote wont count anyway, since you live in California. Thats... uninteresting.

They should of let Gabbard finish her question to Warren

The debates wouldn't be 3 hours long if there weren't so many candidates, so the responses probably wouldn't be much longer, but I'm surprised that so many have held on for so long too. I expected everyone who has never seen 5% to be gone by now. They're all collecting enough money to survive, which facilitates a more diverse exchange of ideas.

A while back I suggested dems take a page from NCAA playoffs: Seed all candidates and pair them off for head to head debates of maybe 20-30 minutes each. Winner moves on, loser our of debate schedule. The top four then do a round robin against the other three.

college towns tend to be far more accepting of that than the states in general. Ithaca NY is far more liberal than most of upstate NY. the University of Texas is probably the most liberal area in that state.
Yeah, but it's a conservative Catholic University!

Yes, he's been so weak throughout his whole campaign that it's hard to watch.

Yet, I suspect he'll still win in the end, and likely beat Trump.

This is my tinfoil hat talking but I believe if the top 5 in polling were centrist like Biden, Klobouchar, Delaney, Bennet, and Booker... they (the DNC working with the networks) would have already narrowed this down to those 5. That two progressives are in the top three makes them keep expanding the stage IMO.

Like I said, this is my tin foil hat talking here on this one.
Yours strikes me as a fair point. The Dem Party is a changing!

Yeah, but it's a conservative Catholic University!

Not as conservative as many believe. I think college kids are far more accepting of homosexuality than 40-70 year old unionists or farmers

Biden will lose to donald.
Could he? Yes.

Will he? The idea that only everyone's favorite candidate can beat Trump is misguided.

Biden is FAR more liked personally than Trump, which is a major metric Clinton never had.

I mean, it would be entertaining for sure, but presidential politics is a little more serious than college sports or reality TV eliminations. If these giant candidate fields become the norm, then the parties are going to have to find a better way to have these primary debates. The Republican debates in 2015 and the Democratic debates now are just too shallow in substance and too spastic in topical explorations.

The DNC is a dumpster, no doubt about that.

However, it's not their fault that everyone with a pulse deluded themselves into trying to be the nominee.

What are some of these conservative policies she supports?

I am not sure you can call them truly conservative, but she has backed trump on some issues, and has not backed the democrat party hard line stance on other issues.

Anti-trust laws won't break up big tech companies because they are not monopolies. They are just very popular. There are no laws against being a very popular company.

Frankly, nobody moved their personal needle tonight.

Yeah, but are 10 people on stage trying to out yell each other or score "gotcha" points really that serious? Head to head confrontations on one or two issues might help get rid of the light loads.
