I feel bad for what Trump has done to the farmers, I can't blame Mr. Gibbs.

Points
  • “I’m not going to vote for the president, and I’m on record for saying that,” Ohio soybean farmer and former Republican county chairperson Chris Gibbs tells CNBC.
  • “I don’t believe it until [the crops are] on the boat. This is deja vu all over again,” he says about Trump’s claims that China will make $40 billion to $50 billion worth of agricultural buys.
  • “He’s done that before. Somebody has to speak truth to power a little bit,” he says.

Trump could '''walk across my pond''' and I won'''t vote for him again: Ohio farmer

I don't feel bad for Mr Gibbs at all. He got what he voted for. And it was CLEAR what he was voting for from the beginning.

Regardless, I think OH is going to be a tough lift for the Dems. It seems to be now in the "Red Leaning" rather than "bellwether" category, IMO.

I got to hand it to the farmers. They chose to make a deal with a bunch of communist control freaks, and they expected the new president to just take the USA whistling to the economic graveyard for soybean farmers just like the president before him. They never saw it coming. Really? How bleeping stupid can you be.

It’s not Trumps fault, it’s China’s fault.

Maybe, but there are some signs that the opposite could be true. The results of the special election in the 12th district last year - a Republican stronghold for decades - was absolutely shocking. The Republican won, but avoided a mandatory recount by only 520 votes. And, trade war aside, it hasn’t been a great year for farming.

If you are lucky Trump may actually get an agricultural deal. You can’t counterfeit a pig. But that would be too easy as the China problem is too big to solve in one fell swoop due to a cultural difference in the value of honesty in trade.

We should keep the disengagement process going, and just make deals that are transparent, profitable, and safe. Like agriculture.

Domestic policy for US agriculture has always been a dumpster fire. Stop subsidizing farmers to overproduce and they won’t be so reliant on foreign markets to sell their excess produce.

People are not really rational creatures. Trump appealed to them on an emotional level that they bought into. Sure, they were suckered, and we're trained to despise marks, but really it could happen to anyone. Trump is a superb con artist. If you can really hook people emotionally they'll twist their reasoning around to fit.

I agree. You don’t hear politicians talking about that. We are sending billions subsidies to corporate farmers. We call them “Subsidy farmers - a crop that takes grease instead of water”.
