John Shimkus: GOP congressman 'heartbroken' over President's Syria moves, says he no longer supports Trump - CNNPolitics

Republican Rep. John Shimkus of Illinois is going further than many of his fellow GOP lawmakers in criticizing President Donald Trump's shift in Syria strategy, declaring he no longer supports Trump altogether because of the move.
Even as congressional Republicans largely stand behind the President as he faces an impeachment inquiry in the House, lawmakers from Trump's own party this week have joined Democrats in widely condemnation of his recent decision that enabled Turkey to launch an attack on Kurdish forces who fought alongside Americans to defeat ISIS.
Trump decided to reposition a small number of US troops in northern Syria, effectively giving the green light to the Turkish offensive against the Kurds who have long been the US partner in fighting ISIS in Syria.

In an interview with radio station KMOX, Shimkus, who is not seeking reelection in 2020, condemned Trump's decision.
"It's terrible. It's despicable," he said.
"I'm heartbroken. In fact, I called my chief of staff in DC and said, 'Pull my name off the I support Donald Trump list.' We have just stabbed our allies in the back," Shimkus added. "This has just shocked, embarrassed, and angered me."

Good. Lets hope other GOP lawmakers can be as brave as him.

That guy better not quit. More often than not, Republicans who publicly come out in opposition resign, thereby neutering any significance of that opposition.

Evidently you missed this part:

LOL!!

Shimkus has already stated he was not running for re-election in 2020.

I also don't agree with the moves in Syria. The Kurds deserve better from the US.

With whose moves in Syria?

At this point, it’s not “bravery!”

If you don't understand it from what I wrote, I will spell it out, I think Trump made a bad mistake in his decision to leave the Kurds vulnerable to Turkey. Let alone leaving Syria open to an invasion by Turkey.

I guess it took kids getting slaughtered for him to have an epiphany.

Just think of those that don't care. They're not heading north in the afterlife.

I badgered you because I'm seeing a move by Congressional Republicans to separate Trump's orders from what's happening to the Kurds. I didn't know if you were doing the same thing.

Glad that the supporter of PKK terrorists is leaving Congress. Maybe a nice Green Party candidate can take his place.

There is nothing brave about running his mouth. The assumption that Turkey would not have gone into Syria to "fight terrorists" if 50 US troops had not been removed is rather odd. Trump was given fair warning of Turkey's planned military adventure and he saved the lives of those he could. Let that "brave" man go stand in the way in Northern Syria and show us how he can stop the Turkish military mission in progress using his US Congressional credentials as a superpower to keep him and all Kurds nearby him safe. He is simply flipping off Trump as he "bravely" runs for office no more.

Is there anything really wrong with leaving the very people that fought for our causes to be slaughtered?

Yet another brave brave Sir Robin. What a gutless lot when it comes to standing up for their values and principles. They'll sell out everything they supposedly believe in to get elected. No wonder the USA is in so much trouble.

This is abject BS and you know it (or you should by now). Erdogan would not have dared to move into Rojava if the US blocking force remained in place.

He clearly asked that because some fake conservatives are too cowardly to specifically name twump as the individual responsible for all of this.

Trump is reemploying troops to Northern Syria.

Btw, Shimkus is retiring. Who cares?

Lastly, your news story is not breaking news.

Did Erdogan tell you this personally or are you simply desperate to make stuff up?

Those troops have been in Manbij since December of 2018. No Erdogan movement.

Nothing happened until Trump ordered the US blocking force removed.

If you can't figure it out, then that's on you.

But all of Congress and retired military people who can talk freely are doing so in spades.

This is all on Trump. No Donnie cut-and-run, no Turkey invasion.

I wasn't aware before you were so in love with Donnie. Now we know.

The problem is not use leaving Syria, the problem is Turkey attacking Syria and not one doing anything about that.

Turkey is in NATO, Yes NATO, that wonderful group of countries that can't make a decision if their lives depended on it.

For every DEM who is screaming about staying in Syria to protect the KURDS, were you equally screaming to go into northern Iraq and stop the genocide of the Yazidi's.

Should we start targeting Turkish military posts who are firing on Syria? Do you want to spread out the US troops all over the area so the Turks will not fire? Is your son or daughter one of the volunteers being used as a shield?

Something is wrong with this entire picture.

What else have you "figured out" that I am supposed to accept as fact?

Something is wrong. Trump abandoned them.
