Facebook says it will not take down false ads, but should it? Remember, the First Amendment does not cover private speech platforms such as Facebook, so if they wanted to they could take down obviously false political Ads. Are you okay with them taking down such ads and are you okay with politico's lying to the public in this manner.

Yes, they should. Being paid for propaganda is a disaster and you have no freedom of speech when it comes to private platforms.

How do you solve this issue? FB is massive. Uninstall it, and get rid of it.

In the end, it will have to do something. This recent action by Warren shows the extreme weakness in its current policy and other political nonprofit groups on both sides (I am virtually certain) are currently figuring out how to best exploit this weakness she pointed out, which will end up making a mockery of facebook itself (for this topic).

In the end, I see two choices.

1. no political advertising
2. facebook will need to moderate based on truth of the content.

Neither is an enviable position, but facebook made this mess with their stupid policy in the first place.

I think facebooks history clearly shows it has a political bias towards the left. I don't trust them to be fair and impartial.

Should they? Well I suppose it's up to them and how much effort they want to put into policing things.

In the end, people should probably put less emphasis on Facebook as some "news" source.

The question hinges on who becomes the decision maker for what is and is not false.

You could argue well that Facebook was entirely trapped by this no matter what they came back with, as a social media platform where 'so called news' and political advertisement can be shared the question becomes cloudy on what Facebook ultimately is. They have faced this before in another context questioning what the platform can be construed as.

The First Amendment question is compelling *but* we all just to use Facebook agree to a 'terms of service' which may or may not collide why anyone's interpretation of rights.

As usual, this is far more complicated than anyone is giving this credit for.

random ass pictures of minions and badly worded self empowerment picture messages go hand in hand with the news!

Facebook only cares about maximizing traffic, which increases profit. False ads are the tip of the frigging iceberg over there. I joined two political groups on Facebook a few months back, and they were a complete cluster**** of disinformation, fake news from websites nobody has heard of, and commenters who seemed to only have a very casual interest in politics. That experience made me appreciate what the folks at DP have created, which has some really intelligent posters who genuinely care about the country.

Don't they mark the ad as dubious?

I think the masses have been educated about Facebook ads, so the impact of these ads are going to be limited at best. And political attack ads have never been pleasant.

I wonder if they should enact some sort of reputation system... I wonder how that would work.

Just a thought.

What's a false political ad?

Just who would determine if they were false. This is just another attempt by the left to censure free speech. This is as useless as PC!!!!!

I am sure they could find a nonpartisan fact finder that could do the job quickly and easily to objectively go over each politco's ads before posting them.. Of course unless you believe in "alternate" facts.

It should take down all political adverts, except maybe those that are verifiable statements by the candidates themselves and broadcast from their Facebook account.

If i was in charge of facebook i wouldn't allow any false advertising or tabloids including false political claims and ads, im fineif they take it down BUT thats just me
They do use fact checkers on things at least now

But facebook is free to do what it wants and even though people are obviously to stupid and or too lazy and it does do damage to politics and reality they are free to do so.

The only option is to not participate and or use their product.

If we could just get a bell on that cat...

Social credit score...

Mao would certainly approve.

Am I the only one here that doesn’t get a single political ad in their Facebook feed? My social media is politics free.

Pretty much every political ad contains false information. False promises at the very least.

No facebook shouldn't be taking down political ads. It shouldn't even be accepting them to begin with.
