Last month Shep Smith decided that he had simply had enough.

With President Trump actively distorting the truth and many of his own colleagues helping him do it, the Fox News star prided himself on anchoring a newscast that countered the network's pro-Trump opinion shows.
The way Smith saw it, he was making sure that accurate information was getting on Fox's air.
"I wonder," he told a Time magazine reporter last year, "if I stopped delivering the facts, what would go in its place in this place that is most watched, most listened, most viewed, most trusted? I don't know."

For months I have been working on a book about Fox News in the Trump age. Staffers have been confiding in me about the challenges of covering the news inside a network that is increasingly defined by sychophantic pro-Trump personalities like Sean Hannity.
 
He was one of the few on Fox who didn't just regurgitate government propaganda.

I was always expecting that he would be fired. I hope he goes to work somewhere else.

There's no room for integrity, truth and honesty in this age of spin, alternative facts and propaganda.

The U.S. has been through years and years of war, financial collapse and tragedy and always come out the other end better than before. But how long will it take for U.S. to get back to normal after just 3 ~ 4 years of tRump; do we even know what normal is anymore? :(
 
Fox news, Limbaugh and many other lying, hate spewing Republican/conservative talking heads are a big reason this country is now so divided.

I personally know Republicans who 20 years ago disagreed with Democrats, but respected and allowed for their differing opinions. Now? After 20 years of being brainwashed by the hate on Fox those same people, so called pro-life people ,have flat out said to me they hope certain Dems/Libs politicians die. They hate their guts. Politics is everything to them now, and it's 100% their way or the highway. They will happily burn down this country to keep from electing a Dem for the WH, especially another Black Dem.

Why? Do you somehow feel that ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and CNN have a shortage of left wing voices? In fact, can you even name a right wing voice on any of those channels? No, you cant. The fact is, there is only one source for news with a right wing perspective on television and that is FOX. Every other channel speaks with the same left wing voice. At least FOX aired a left wing perspective with Shep Smith and they didnt fire him, he left. You dont get any balance whatsoever from the other channels which is why you liberals have zero understanding of the views of the right--you are never exposed to them.

I was a Republican for 35 years. I've seen the changes Fox and the Limbaughs have done to the party, and the Republican base. I've seen the changes, I've seen the hate. Trump didn't happen overnight.

The only proof I need is Trump and how 80% of the Republican base continually support the lying, classless, ill-mannered, hate filled leader of the GOP.. He's an awful human being, and totally unfit for office. The same Republicans who use to love Ronald Reagan are now 110% behind Trump. Can you even imagine Reagan insulting people like the childish Trump does? Using vulgar gutter language like Trump? Defending dictators while insulting American Vets, agencies and Gold Star families?

You are a perfect example of what's gone on in the GOP.

You are right, I am a perfect example. First off, I dispute the lies of the left and the false accusations of hate. Like I said, you want to see real hate? Read your own posts. You are one of the most hate filled members here, by far. Second, I was and still am a huge fan of Reagan and am a huge fan of Trump for the same reasons--I support the policies and ideology of both men. Trump is every bit as conservative as Reagan and in many ways more so. He is also more personally flawed than Reagan. But I am interested in policy, not personality. He is a flawed individual who is 100% correct on policy. The difference between the Trump hater and the Trump lover is one focuses only on his flaws, the other on his policy.

The amount of people that have been seduced and believe that Donald Trump is the 'chosen one' is staggering. The shear blasphemy of the 'religious right' is astounding. These self-righteous people profess to have a deeply seated belief yet they blindly follow a false god. The phenomenon is nearly biblical. "Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many."

The right should know that any man that has lived his life in such a faith-less, hedonistic, self-indulgent way without conscience or remorse, simply cannot be a man of god as they think he is. This puts our country in a good vs. evil scenario. They see anyone opposing Trump as being evil baby-killers that want to allow millions of brown-skinned immigrants into this country to take their jobs, replace their white minority with people of color, rape their women and murder their children. That's what Fox News has planted in their brains. Sorry people, you're on the wrong side, the side of evil.

As far as Trump's policies that the right think are great, they are not. His policies abroad and at home are downright divisive and harmful to our economy, to our infrastructure and to human rights. Right now, our Constitution is in jeopardy. No president since this country began has literally threatened our Constitution. We didn't realize just how fragile it was.

And I know plenty of liberals that have the exact same hate and attitudes towards those on the right. There are more then a couple just in this website.

Trying to pretend the problem is one side is either horrible dishonest or simply being blinded by your own extreme bias.

I disagree, somewhat. It's been more like forty years of this spoon fed hatred for the democrats. Reagan started it all along with the decline of the american middle class. It's not all about politics for the right, it's about hating the liberals. If it were about politics the poor people who vote republican wouldn't be voting against their own best interests election after election. It's not about politics, it's about beating the dreaded liberals. The southern states controlled by republicans for decades have been the poorest states in the country and yet they still vote republican for the most part. Why? They hate the libs. The GOP has done an excellent job of brainwashing their base.
 
A point of importance was made earlier in this thread. It concerned separating the personal character and comments of President of the United States of America Donald Trump from his policies. I believe it is a valid one. In folksy terms, it's 'Don't judge me by what I say, but by what I do.'

The first major step in the process is to define the policies. The next is to examine them for their actual effects on A) the American people, and B) the world at large.

So, as a start, what are some of the consistent policies of President Donald Trump?

Mr. Smith could have left for a reason that has NOTHING to do with the political orientation of FOX NEWS.

He is a human being just like us.

He may have left because of a personal reason that is none of our business.

Gee, I thought I was reading my own post there!

I was a registered Republican from 1973 until 2007.

However, George HW Bush was the last Republican I voted for for President. (I wanted to vote for Bob Dole, but I didn’t think he had the stones to stand up to the likes of Limbaugh, Gingrich, Hastert and DeLay.

I remember the very first time I ever heard the Rush Limbaugh program. I was in my boss’ car. I had read about Limbaugh. There was a lot of reporting on how he caught fire. The WSJ tried to paint him as a fresh voice for younger and better educated conservatives.

One minute of Limbaugh made it plain that that was nonsense.

Still he was very entertaining, witty and often hilarious. I got a kick out of it.

But I also thought, if people take this clown seriously, he could be very dangerous.
 
It will be interesting to see what Fox News will do to maintain their 'Fair and balanced' reporting. Stay tuned ...

Hi! When I first started listening to the Rush Limbaugh program, I was impressed by the staff that hired and scripted the 'call-in' actors in an on-going, totally over-the-top parody. I got a lot of chuckles out of the unfiltered regurgitation of 'talking points' and sound bites. Later, I learned that the callers-in were not scripted actors.

I remember first discovering Limbaugh decades ago on the radio and thought it was good to have a conservative on the radio to get a different point of view. Then I discovered he was just another Republican.

So, Trump rants about the way Smith is telling the truth. Barr runs off to New York to see Rupert Murdoch. And then Smith is out.

But there must be some OTHER explanation!

There has to be, or else the moniker Trump TV sticks, and Fox “News” is little more than the Ministry of Propoganda for the Trump team (as if that wasn’t obvious already!).

Facts are not "left" or "right" wing. Shep Smith reported facts. The idea you guys think its left wing to report facts simply on the merit those facts dont align with your ideology is why this country is falling into ruin.

Actually, some of the callers ARE scripted actors. Limbaugh owns the talent agency that hires them.

Do Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck hire fake callers?

Remember that Rush is no more a competent political commentator than the guys who do your local “morning zoo” radio show.

He has a stack of talking points from the Trump White House, every big corporate lobbyist, and right wing pressure groups. He puts a smiley face on the material and presents it to an unquestioning audience that seldom reads anything, and is only likely to “know” what Rush presents. (Or Hannity presents).

Few people have ever turned Limbaugh because they got tired of being lied to. Most don’t even know.

And right wingers have shown a consistent high tolerance for being lied to by their favorite media.
