Not a simple issue. No question vice taxes, from alcohol and tobacco to gambling (in the form or lotteries and soon sports betting) have fueled revenues for local and state governments. It has been estimated that the illicit prostitution industry generates more than $15 bil annually in the US, as compared to about $35 bil for tobacco, $25 bil for alcohol, $42 bil for gambling, annually.

On the other hand, no child grows up looking forward to a career in prostitution. I won't argue the reasons why a participant may choose a prostitution career path. Systems of strict licensing with stricter enforcement could minimize underage participation, forced sex trafficking, improve health monitoring and working conditions, and so forth. All beneficial to the participants on both the sales and consumer sides of the business. As well, zoning can restrict brothels from residential neighborhoods, pursuant to licensing requirements. Frankly, a client would have to be exceptionally stupid to step outside the licensing system for health reasons alone, let along strict penalties for being caught doing so. There is no question some will game the systems, but it will still mean greater protections for sex workers and clients, and other benefits.

No matter anyone's moral or political opinions of either the profession or taxation thereof, there is no denying the oldest profession will not disappear. The best to be hoped for is a methodology of lawful controls.

I gather nearly all Democrats on this thread insist that OSHA should be eliminated. A person should be able to hire themselves out for any job, no matter how dangerous, because it is their body and health to sell that the government should not prevent.

I can not imagine any job in the civilian market more dangerous than prostitution. This is not an opinion based upon the source of the opinion of nearly everyone on this thread - TV. The portray of prostitution on TV is fake and ridiculous, like cartoon characters. The violence and abuse of prostitutes is routine and horrific. It is inherent to the nature of the men who hire prostitutes.

Since knowing some goon is going to come almost beat them to death for harming one of the women doesn't completely prevent this, "government regulation" certainly won't. Again, this is NOT about "brothels." It is about prostitution. Prostitutes are often beaten, abused, scarred, infected with disease, and disfigured. Refusal to wear a condom and forcing sex on the prostitute is extremely common.

While Hollywood portrays pimps and clownish men who slap their women around - and certainly some do - more often pimps more protect prostitutes than police do or ever could - because the police can only arrest people, need warrants and have to prove their case. Pimps don't. Police can't covertly watch prostitutes at work, pimp can and often do - meaning if a man is harming one of the women the pimp (or pimp's thug/s) charge in and beat the crap out of that man - which police can't do.

Though in my past, the club I worked for had prostitutes that worked out of the club. To be in the club, they had to give a cut to the club. If not they were run off the property. "Prostitution" itself is complicated to define. It could be she tells him a fee and he pays it. Or it could be for drugs. Or it could the guy spends piles of money at the club, for which he is essentially given a woman who is then paid by the club, not the guy.

The club was extremely successful including because of the women. All clubs are dependent upon women coming as women bring the men. Women will not come to a club where they feel it is dangerous. The club was very seriously into protecting the woman - whether prostitutes or just a woman who comes to the club. Men could tease with women, play with them, have fun and anything the woman agreed to was fine.

But don't even think about hurting her. Slap a woman? Everyone then gets to see that man beaten and stomped into the floor. Hurt a woman, cut a woman, beat a woman - one of the women of the club - away from the club. You better run and run far because a couple of merciless professional thugs are coming after you and they are going to hurt you - real bad. Won't kill you. But it'll be the worst beating of your life and likely put you in the hospital for a while - and you may not like looking in a mirror after that. If you truly seriously and permanently harmed or disfigured the woman your nuts might be ripped off.

People on this topic REALLY don't know what the hell they are talking about. They think this is about high dollar escort women, women like Pretty Women, sleazy women on street corners watched over by sleazier pimps, and Old West brothels. Most prostitutes are poor. Most prostitutes aren't all that attractive - attractive ones sell sexual enticement and sexual come-ons and no actual sex. Most prostitutes are drug addicts. Most prostitutes are part time. Actually, married folk tend to be more circumspect. Most of those studies surveyed call girl services in urban areas, which today dominate the industry. The surveys also including happy ending massage parlors, the more obvious face of the industry. The relative impact of cheap prostitutes thanks to the meth and opiate usage is today of minimum impact on the industry as a whole. Think about Elliot "Black Socks" Spitzer and his $4,000 an hour cheap call girl episodes. Both minimal extremes of the industry.

Bar and Hotel girls are the same working women used by the call girl services. Street walkers are mostly a thing of the past due to gentrification of urban centers and the arrival of the internet as a medium of prostitution commerce. The day of the $20 crack whoa is history, even tho the meth crisis may still keep the cost of a BJ down.

Neither the NYPD nor the Boston PD targeted religious communities for sexual predators until both the NYS BCI and the Massachusetts CIB produced analysis of arrest records and convictions showing the predominance of sexual predators coming from religious communities about 10 years ago. A profiling that has proved effective. It is a pattern that has proved out nationwide. As one vice detective put it, "It may not be that religion is the cause, but that it creates a curtain for predators to hide behind."

Your message is all fantasyland. Not 1 in 1000 prostitutes would participate in any government program or requirement. What percentage of prostitutes in Nevada do you think work in a brothel?

Sex trafficking, including of children, has been studied to compare stats where prostitution is legal and is not. I'm not looking it up again, since every 2 or 3 months this identical topic is still again a new thread.

Something anyone with an IQ over 60 could guess, sex trafficking including children is rampant where prostitution is legal. OBVIOUSLY it is easier to stop a business that inherently is illegal than stopping one that is not.

Find a location with a dozen drugged up young women being sold to a dozen men a day? If prostitution is legal there is no case unless the drug addicted women will talk. If prostitution is illegal all that need be shown is that the person is operating the prostitution ring - whether the females will claim it was not consentual or not. Since the government isn't going to assign a 24/7 police officer to each woman and put each women in the FBI witnesses protection program, few such women would dare testify the she did not consent to being a gang-rape prostitution.

Unfortunately, it's always about the money. They want more taxes, knowing they get none when its illegal. What is going through the mind of people who desire to legalize prostitution? It need be mention if you have to pay her for sex, it means she does NOT want to have sex with you at all. Rather, it means your with money would be a sexual predator against her for being poor.

Paying someone who needs the money to clean your house is not the same as paying someone to suck your ass and swallow your s... because she desperately needs the money. More relevant is that you openly advocate for legalizing sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is causing a person to think their job is conditioned upon sex or being a sex object even if no sex involved. You want that fully legalized.
