Nancy Pelosi Not Budging on Impeachment and Her Colleagues Are Privately Screaming
But it remains the case that only Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will decide whether the caucus moves forward with impeachment. On Friday afternoon, she called on the Trump administration to end the stonewalling on the whistleblower complaint—and promised that her committees will move to get it if they do not comply. But, notably, she did not broach the topic of impeachment.

The comments sparked renewed frustration among the ranks of lawmakers worried that the failure to begin impeachment proceedings has effectively abetted more ethically-dubious activity from Trump.

“She’s still holding back,” one pro-impeachment lawmaker said of Pelosi. “If impeachment isn’t for this, why is impeachment in the constitution?”

Privately, lawmakers put the tally on those who support impeachment at just under 140 members of the House. But that number has been steadily growing over the course of the summer even as Pelosi has said she sees no political upside in its pursuit.
This is truly pathetic. Trump abuses his office to target Democrats and rubs Pelosi's nose in it like a dog.

We've talked endlessly about what Republican leaders will tolerate from Trump, but what we aren't discussing enough is what Democratic leaders are tolerating from him.

They are the majority. There is no excuse not impeach to him. The line has been crossed. Don't give me this "well, Republicans will never convict him" because by that logic, Pelosi shouldn't bring a single bill to the floor, since McConnell will never let it come up for a vote, right?

And don't give me this crap that "kitchen table issues" are the buzz around America, because Pelosi hasn't done a damn thing to make that the Democratic message. No, she's talked endlessly about what a criminal Trump is, and then runs and hides when her bluff is called.

If you're too afraid to impeach a President that is recruiting foreign assistance for next years election to beat you, and is breaking the law to conceal it, you're a pathetic loser that deserves to go down in history as Trump's greatest accomplice during his reign of debauchery.

Psst, here's the secret, the majority of Dems never wanted to bring formal charges or they would never have voted for Pelosi as speaker. And you will be able to tell when they change their minds. There will be a major and very public movement in the caucus to replace her if she doesn't get out of the way. Pelosi is doing exactly what the majority in her caucus currently want. They want to scream and shout in those districts where it is popular to scream and shout, and slow walk this everywhere else.

Voters will decide whether these high crimes and misdemeanors warrant his replacement in about 13 months, while they simultaniously decide if they want to replace the House membership.

I wasn't okay with it until this whole whistle-blower thing came out, then I began to trust her judgement again. She's clever because she's playing it both ways, she's allowing the public to become outraged enough by her reticence that she's actually building a coalition of support from the public. She's been playing this politics game since she was a child, she knows how to work it and she's still sharp as a tack. I put my trust in her the day she said that "Trump is self-impeaching" and I'm certain she knew that sooner or later, and before the 2020 election, that Trump would get crazier and sloppier and eventually do something so egregious that there would be an overwhelming roar from both sides to impeach him.

There is no strategy, she simply doesn't want to do it because she doesn't like political wars.

The idea that "she's playing 3d chess" is delusional. She's made it loud and clear that not only she not playing 3d chess, she's not playing ANYTHING.

Trump is good for the democrats, that's why she isn't pushing impeachment.

Trump is a polarizing force and more people are finding themselves in opposition to Trump. That's more people voting the democratic ticket. Why do you think there are 20 democrat candidates? They smell blood.

Evidently you know very little about Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi is arguably the most politically astute person in D.C.; her political prowess over the decades is legendary.

There's a reason for this; the woman is not only one of the smartest living politicians, she understands democratic voters better than just about anyone on the planet.

Should Trump be impeached for high crimes & misdemeanors? Of course. Does the House have the votes to do so? Probably. Would impeaching Trump mere months, perhaps weeks, before Nov. 2020 do anything whatsoever to assist Democratic candidates maintain their seats in 2020 and garner new ones? Nope. Would Trump actually be convicted by the Senate and removed from office mere months, perhaps weeks, before Nov. 2020? Of course not. Never. Not even if every GOP Senator was promised a personal lap-dancer for life with daily/hourly blow jobs on demand.

So what in whatever God one worships' name would be the freaking point? Democrats have everything to lose, and not even the slightest possibility of winning.

If Trump isn't re-elected, I suspect there will be a line of indictments and arrest warrants waiting outside the WH in January of 2021; problem solved. If Trump is indeed re-elected, then the House has had an extra year or two to get their impeachment investigation strategy in line to convince the general public with incontrovertible evidence that this president is corrupt to the core; if the damned general public doesn't care and has already re-elected Trump, America has bigger problems than any impeachment could resolve in less than a generation. It will prove that American citizens don't care about having a corrupt government as long as the corruption gives them what they personally want.

So y'all tell me, what could possibly be the upside for the Democrats and the American people of wasting the next year on a fool's errand instead of working on healthcare and other issues that we know the majority of Americans desperately want, pointing at Moscow Mitch and the GOP Senate when Americans are denied what they want, and using that obstructionism as a campaign platform for the entire Democratic 2020 Platform?

Yep. You get it.

The only thing Democrats and anti-trumpers know how to do these days is attack each other.

Notice the silence from all of the Democratic candidates when the T-party attacks one particular Democrat, no matter who it is.

For some reason I think Pelosi has a better handle on this than her critics from the peanut gallery. The voters well know Trump’s sins and foibles and his support remains entrenched around 40 percent. He won’t win with that number. Pelosi doesn’t want to boost him with a sympathetic impeachment trial presided over by McConnell who will orchestrate it as an attack against a wronged man. Voter interest will be there for the impeachment hearings in the House but it will be there in spades for that trial. Pelosi is no dope.

Psst, here's the secret, the majority of Dems never wanted to bring formal charges or they would never have voted for Pelosi as speaker.

I don't think she ran for speaker under the promise that she would try her damnedest to block impeachment procedures.

First, Pelosi has had almost a year to work on health care and populace issues, and she's largely sat on her ass. It was Pelosi's choice to talk more about Trump's criminal conduct than social issues, not the more liberal wings of the party. If she didn't really care about corrupt conduct by Trump, she should have said so, and then been honest with her base that she was at that place.

If you don't have the balls to hold him accountable, don't bluff that you will and be called out like a fool.

Secondly, the reason we should impeach is because if we don't, every single last Republican President is going to know that Democrats will never have the stomach for an impeachment, no matter how corruptly they behave. We will be setting a precedent that will take a generation or more to break, just like when we enabled Republicans to keep shutting the government down whenever they couldn't win a democratic vote in the congress. It won't end with Trump and his gang.

Thirdly, the whole idea of just saving an impeachment for a hypothetical second term of Trump is ... really bad strategy. He won't be convicted in a second term anymore than he will now.

Let the Republican party go down as the party that supports fascism, and the Democrats go into 2020 as standing up for the principle that the Presidency not being a monarchy, and no person being above the laws we little people have to obey.

I respect your opinion, DiAnna. I see your perspective. But the time to stand up to tyranny is here.

I know that the myth of her being some political tactician is just bull****.

Republicans have gamed her for years.

Pelosi has no problem with political wars. Pelosi doesn't like losing political wars. She singlehandedly is responsible for OCare. Flipped the House.

Impeachment, be it Kavanaugh or Trump, is a losing battle. And to lose either just before the general is a lose, lose, lose battle.

I know that the myth of her being some political tactician is just bull****.

Please explain how the 'republicans have gamed her for year' and I will explain the accomplishments of Nancy Pelosi and why she's the first female Speaker of the House in U.S. history. Republicans have been demonizing Pelosi not only because she’s a woman, but because she’s a woman who gets it done. What has Pelosi done? So glad you asked.

Pelosi passed: The Affordable Care Act. Oh yes she sure did. Republicans didn't get anything over on her when that passed.

Dodd-Frank: This Wall Street reform was passed as a response to the recession of 2008 with hope that a financial crisis like that will never happen again and in hopes that banks will never become too big to fail.
Credit Card Reform: The Credit Card Holders Bill of Rights issued new regulations on card companies, demanding that they increase transparency.

Student Loans: The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act increases the amount of Pell Grants for college students.

Tobacco Regulation: The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act gave the Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate the tobacco industry.

Food Safety: The Food Safety Modernization Act would give the Food and Drug Administration more power over food producers (passed by Senate, not yet signed into law).

110th Congress:

Raising minimum wage

Hate Crimes Prevention Act

Establishing the Office of Congressional Ethics
Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay: Sought to make sure women receive equal pay for equal work.

Economic Stimulus Act of 2008: Passed to lessen the blow of a recession and boost the economy away from a financial freefall. “The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 put $787 billion into the economy in hope of blunting the effect of the recession.”

The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: Which allowed LGBTQ individuals in our military to serve openly without consequence.

Okay, it's your turn to tell me how republicans have gamed her for a year. Oh, and how's that great new wall working out?

Yes, Pelosi is right more than she's wrong. So what? So is Schumer, and I don't see anyone singing praise for him.

Nobody questions that she's a liberal at heart, but her record of giving Republicans what they want is extensive.

You want a good example of her giving into Republicans that's recent?

House Passes Senate Border Bill in Striking Defeat for Pelosi - The New York Times
Congress sent President Trump a $4.6 billion humanitarian aid package on Thursday after Speaker Nancy Pelosi capitulated to Republicans and Democratic moderates and dropped her insistence on stronger protections for migrant children in overcrowded border shelters.

The vote came after a striking display of Democratic disunity and was a setback for Ms. Pelosi. Until Thursday, she had proved adept at navigating the complexities of a caucus rived by powerful progressive and moderate factions that often work at cross purposes. But their priorities clashed, the liberal flank was vanquished and the speaker — who had put her reputation on the line, calling herself a “lioness” out to protect children as she held out for stronger protections in the migrant facilities that house them — grudgingly had to accept defeat.

The final vote, 305 to 102, included far more Republicans in favor, 176, than Democrats, 129. It left House liberals furious.

This is what she has done throughout most of her career, giving into hostage games.

Had we not blown up her phone during the last shutdown, you can bet she would have given Trump his wall. We know she's capable of it. Hell, she gave Bush a blank check for his wars, helped sweep away his war crimes, AND voted for the PATRIOT ACT, when Republicans slimed her enough with the term "radical".

This is 2019, not 1995, or even 2005. Republicans are fighting like Crips, and Democrats are fighting like they're in a game with rules.

She did the right thing, she's a humanitarian unlike any one of the republicans and went along with that bill for the humanitarian needs of those children and others that were being incarcerated in inhumane conditions. Good for her. There's not a republican on Capital Hill that can touch her record or her decency and fairness.

Dude, she didn't get the protections for the migrant children. She didn't win, she lost. All that happened there was Trump learned that to get more money for the border, all he has to do is put children in ICE custody in filthy conditions, and Pelosi will give him money to simply maintain the status-quo.

That's not winning.

Why would Trump PREFER to put children in custody in filthy conditions? In December 2018, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer agreed to give Trump his full $25 billion wall funding request. THE FULL $25 BILLION!! He refused because he would have to allow a pathway to citizenship for the 1.8 million dreamers. Instead he got nothing so he had to go to Plan B, which was Stephen Miller's plan to demonize, punish, imprison and separate parents from their kids.

That's not winning because everyone loses in that scenario.

I totally agree with you. I'm pissed off about how weak and pathetic Democrats are behaving. Trump is doing whatever he wants and laughing at them. And the Democrats are still holding these absurd hearings with totally uncooperative witnesses.

Democrats are like nerdy hall monitors saying, "Stop, you can't do that. I'm going to write you up," while the jocks give them a wedgie.

If you play scared you lose. You impeach Trump because you believe he is guilty of impeachable acts not because you think it will be politically popular.

Maybe you were not paying attention to her past statements and positions on impeachment, but you can bet the House Caucus was. I recalled them from the last time she was Speaker. Yes there was actually a progressive movement to impeach Bush for lying to get us into the Iraq war and for facilitating torture and rendition after Clinton's impeachment , and guess who was Speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi has ALWAYS held the same standard throughout her tenure. Pelosi'''s no fan of impeachment: Just ask Clinton and Bush

"The day after Democrats swept to power, Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi stood before the cameras and declared impeachment was “off the table.” That was November 2006.
More than a decade later, Pelosi, again facing a restive left flank but one ready to confront President Donald Trump, says she’s “not for impeachment.”
It’s a remarkably consistent stance from Pelosi, who voted against the impeachment of Bill Clinton, tamped down efforts to impeach George W. Bush and now is leading the House through another moment when a vocal part of the electorate wants to end a presidency...….
" Pelosi has been down this road before. She stood on the House floor in 1998 and railed against Republicans for “hypocrisy” ahead of the votes against Clinton. Years later, as the Iraq war dragged on, her left flank led by then-Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio drew up articles of impeachment against Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
The day after the 2006 midterm elections that swept Democrats to power, Pelosi was asked how she, as the speaker-to-be from San Francisco, would handle those pushing the impeachment debate.
“Democrats are not about getting even,” Pelosi said at the time. “Democrats are about helping the American people get ahead, and that’s what our agenda is about. So while some people are excited about prospects that they have in terms of their priorities, they are not our priorities. I have said, and I say again, that impeachment is off the table.”

It did not take political genius for newbie Dems and progressives to find Pelosi's 30 year record on impeachment. They knew it and they voted for her.

As far as I can tell, she is doing exactly what this caucus expected, when they voted her in. I am not nearly as smart as they are, and I saw this House leadership re-election of Nancy for what it has become - a slow acting poison on impeachment. What do we Dems do, once we win the House?

Here is what I said in my thread in 8-9-2018, when she was in the running for Speakership in a newly Dem controlled House

"The first question is whether Pelosi gets the gavel back and it is to be a very complicated question indeed. Several of the moderate or red hued Dems may have to commit not to vote for Pelosi , when in fact that she is the absolute best option to kill future impeachment hearings. Pelosi was adamant against impeachment hearings on Bush and she is against impeachment hearings of Trump. Meanwhile the progressives will demand Pelosi support such hearings to win their votes because that is what they will have promised the base.

Pelosi will try to walk a fine line re-openning the investigations into Russian hacking and meddling and possible Trump connections but discourage any talk that those hearings should lead to articles of impeachment ( exactly what I support myself by the way) while she plots to pack the Judiciary committee with Dems who are likewise skeptical of impeachment"

Hate to brag here - um no I don't!

Pelosi isn’t playing scared. She’s keeping her eyes on the ball. I’ll admit there’s something to be said for the proud feeling of going down in flames of principle, but it’s short lived.

supporting him and voting for him are not the same.

Trump won with 46% of the vote last time. That 40 you speak to will all vote for him. That means that only 6% of ALL other voters need to vote for him. Only 6%.

Trump only needs to convince 6% that they should vote against a DEm even if they don't like him. Seems to me he will be easily reelected.

Nancy Pelosi Not Budging on Impeachment and Her Colleagues Are Privately Screaming

If they all would focus on things like the budget, infrastructure, HC, the border/immigration loopholes and other stuff that is important to the average Americans, they would be doing their job.
Dems, show the country that you can govern. If so, Trump won't stand a chance in the next election. Focusing on a man who is possibly be gone in little over a year is annoying.
