As liberal and conservative alike rushed to sanctify - if not deify - perky plutocrat spokesmodel Cokie Roberts after her passing, I was immediately reminded of who this woman really was, and her true legacy.

In an infamous Nightline interview, Roberts attacked missionary Sister Dianna Ortiz, a woman who survived rape and torture at the hands of US-backed Guatemalan death squads, repeatedly accusing her of lying.

But as shocking to the conscience as WHAT fortunate daughter Roberts did is, the WHY is even more disturbing; this explanation from the original Wikipedia entry on Roberts, modified/whitewashed after her passing:

While working in Guatemala, Sister Dianna Ortiz, a Catholic nun from New Mexico, was raped and tortured by members of a death squad until a US supervisor recognized that she was from the US.[13] Although there was no doubt of Ortiz's torture and ample evidence to corroborate her claims of an American supervisor, Roberts insisted that Ortiz was lying in a 1996 interview with Ortiz on the TV show "Nightline." Roberts' brother, Tom Boggs, working for the law firm of "Patton, Boggs, & Blow," was paid by the Guatemalan military to promote a more positive image of the death squads and the military dictatorship in Guatemala.[14]

Like her sister misogynist Hillary Clinton, Cokie Roberts made her bones with the plutocracy by attacking women victimized by sexual violence, and in the case of Sister Ortiz, extreme sexual violence and torture.

Women like Roberts stand not on the shoulders of their sisters before them, but (like drunken murderer Ted Kennedy frantically attempting to escape a sinking car) stand on the faces of female victims.

To see how a truly admirable feminist and journalist handled Sister Ortiz's ordeal, Amy Goodman's coverage of the heroic missionary's story is included below for comparison:

Yes, one should be VERY careful when "everyone" eulogizes a celebrity who has died.

No celebrity is ever that good!

I was taught that places like DP exist to discuss things like religion and politics, topics difficult to converse about in many other social contexts.

In the case of Roberts - a mouthpiece for warmongering plutocrats - I see no reason to sheepishly bow my head in obeisance to her obscene behavior.

She lived a wildly privileged life, and did nothing of note other than carry water for various repulsive special interests.

I find nothing admirable about her; even her voice was a soulless, grating drone, perhaps appropriate considering a life of service to profane power rather than principled opposition to it.

Your mileage may vary, however.

What is your opinion of the topic?

Do you think her attack on a survivor of a death squad is something to speak well of, or utterly disgusting?

I agree with this; and yes, she was a full on nuthugger of the plutocratic institutions of this country. Much like my post on the Koch brothers, I misunderstand, I suspect to my lament, why these people insist we need to be "customary" when someone dies.

If someone has a ****ty legacy, let's call it what it is. No need to beat around the bush with niceties for tyrants.

You harbour deep seated opinions about the subject; I am not nearly as well read on CR’s career as you seem to be, therefore I acquiesce to your knowledge on the subject. I would have let rigor set in a little more, no need for dickishness.

In the end, Cokie was just one more servant to the status quo. One more "journalist" who did not know the difference between right and wrong, or was just too big a coward to speak the truth.

To be honest I have no idea of who she was

Amy Goodman I do know of, and if she is saying that Cokie was not exactly a shining light of humanity, I would tend to believe Amy Goodman
