This is what Democrats have done to the city I once lived in and loved.

It is what Leftist compassion looks like. Seattle, SF, Baltimore, Chicago... proof it’s not a one-off Leftist caused problem.

Have not watched the videos. I am sure you are correctly portraying what would be seen.

That being said, whether it is homeless or the horrible lives many have to live in our inner cities is a tragedy. My preference would be to discuss potential solutions rather than make this a partisan issue.

The "Great society" solution which we began 60 years ago clearly will not fix these problems. We need new ideas, not slogans or partisan attacks.

I don't want to speak for conservatives, because I am certainly not one of them. But my impression is that their solution is to remove all social safety nets. They seem confident that if you just leave these people on the street long enough without helping them, either they will die off or learn to work harder. Problem solved.

I don't know, but it strikes me as an oversimplistic view of how poverty happens and how spirals of poverty propogate. I guess it IS about freedom- but it sounds to me like the freedom of the jungle. There is something very ugly about it to me. It's not a freedom in any good sense of the term. It doesn't seem humane or how a modern civil society and developed economy should function.

Segregation plus poverty = some people wind up behaving badly? Who knew! ;)

No you certainly do not speak for conservatives, to say we want these people to stay on the street without helping them and hope they will die off - Problem solved, is inane. The homeless here is out of hand and growing because all those who are homeless from other states who can get here do so because of the better weather conditions than those states. There are massive efforts into cleaning up these areas and helping those that want to be helped, oddly enough many do not want to change. For those who do want help and those who do not, we do the best we can but it is a huge problem, not just in the downtown area of LA but in all the surrounding cities. If you have a solution that is better than the efforts being made now then make them known, I am sure everyone would love the help to solve the problem.

Sure there's a solution. We just need more money from higher taxes, totally legal marijuana, gun bans and strong environmental laws.

If only California had the courage to try some of those things...

How did you extrapolate that to "Leftist cause problem"? Homelessness has always been a problem, I remember when I was a child ridding the bus (my mom didn't drive) through "OLD Downton" and seeing the "bums" camping in the doorways of old abandoned buildings. It was sad to see then and when I see homeless people now it's still sad. But "Old Downtown" is now the most happing place in the city, renovated and very upscale. No bums there now, panhandlers are everywhere but they live in other run down areas now. That was in the 50's and 60's, my point is homelessness is a difficult problem to solve in a free country. You can't force someone to be sane, off drugs, motivated. Whatever their problem is you can't make people do better especially when good paying jobs with benefits and the capital to create them have been shipped overseas. It was Regan's voodoo economics that did that, not Leftist liberals.

Homelessness is America's problem, not liberals or conservatives but something we all must face and find the humanity to deal with it. We need more drug programs, more shelters and more literacy and job training. If that's bigger government we need it, something the "Rightists" are totally against.

Stop allowing people to take take drugs in PUBLIC. enforce laws

Stop allowing people to drink in PUBLIC. enforce laws

Lots of these homeless are dangerous drugged out Mentally crazed Zombies.

But Dems don't know what the problem or solution to "HOMELESSNESS" could be.

I agree with everything you say 100%. But I have never heard any conservative blame the homeless problem in LA to the weather being better there. Usually you hear about how it's because of the libs are mismanaging the place, and helping the homeless with social programs, etc... the insinuation being, apparently, that the real problem is having welfare programs for the poor and so making them dependent, kind of like feeding bears or something. So their solution, from what I understand, is that if you cut the social safety nets for these folks, they will finally learn to go and find their own food, like bears or something.

It seems to me though that the problem of poverty and homelessness in LA is a little more complex than that.

That is not a catch-all, that is just one of the things that increase our homeless count, Hawaii has the same problem, oddly enough many people can scrape up enough for a one way ticket and move in there. LA is forcing low cost affordable housing requirements even onto neighboring cities. That will help some who are on the edge still have a home to stay in but, that of course does not address all the conditions. The streets are filled with needles and waste from those who prefer where they are and there little that can be done to help them because they do not want help. We help all we can but, there are situations where we can not. It's not a political problem despite some who want to make it that way, it's a people problem of all persuasions.

We don’t seem to disagree on much at all here. What gets me upset is when conservatives politicize this problem and try to make it out to be an example of what happens when liberals run a city.

It's sad.

The two-year-old kid wandering around naked is Third World bad. Or at least, it was.

Oh because it's SO much better in conservative cities. :lamo

But conservatives are all racists, remember?

Progressives cities should be fully integrated, because progressives are so tolerant of other races. Yet there are clear dividing lines in cities like Detroit and Boston showing how white liberals refuse to integrate with blacks and Hispanics. Seems to me progressives are just as racist as conservatives.
