NC GOP rocked the legislature with a surprise vote. What exactly happened, and why?

In a nutshell, this is what happened.

North Carolina legislators made national news Wednesday when they took a vote on the state budget with many Democrats absent. The move prompted protests in the General Assembly in downtown Raleigh. It generated a video of a lawmaker’s angry outburst that quickly went viral. And it drew criticism from people across the country.

Wednesday morning’s controversial vote was over a state budget written by Republicans in the legislature.
The House and Senate passed the GOP-written budget, but Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed it on June 5. Republicans don’t have a supermajority in the House or the Senate. In order to override Cooper’s veto, they needed Democrats to vote with them or wait until a day when enough Democrats were absent to give them the edge they needed.

Democrats say many of their members missed the morning session because they were told verbally that there would be no vote on the budget.

The republicans tried to sneak in the vote with many democrats not present to veto the bill, they had been told that there was NOT going to be a vote on this bill and that's why many were not there. But, all the republicans were, of course. Two democrats were at a 9/11 commemorative event. This is another DISGUSTING display by sneaky, corrupt republicans. They've learned well what Trump has taught them. 'Be sneaky, do what you need to do to win, and **** them all if they don't like it.'

Pi, do you not check the forum before posting redundant threads?

Just curious - some people post from phones and have limited views of the forum.

But yeah, two criminal parties.

If it bothers you so much, why are trolling in all of them instead of just one?

Lazy-ass democrats not showing up for work ...

I did check, I missed it. So what

You do it constantly; some regard this as a form of spamming as it drives other threads down in view.

But as I said, two massively criminal parties; freaking out about one strikes me as an irrational reaction.

My personal rule of thumb is that whenever a republican accuses someone of something, it's a good idea to look closely at them and those around them, because one of those people has done, is doing, or will do something very similar.

Usually has done.

They're not very imaginative.

I agree its a bull**** move and vote.

Let this be a lesson to the Democrats in that legislature.

You cannot trust what those Republicans say. They will lie to you. They will deceive you. They will trick you. And their constituents will cheer them on when they do.

Now, you will not learn anything the second time they pull this kind of crap. Keep that in mind, and behave accordingly.

This was pathetic. Only 9 of 55 Dems were in the chamber, during a session where each day Dems had to specifically ask if votes would be taken that day, because the Speaker put the override vote on the calendar each and every day for weeks but never held the vote because Dems had showed up to sustain the override. One Dem showed up after her cancer surgery to ensure this very thing did not happen.

These members must have been deceived into leaving that day, or these lopsided attendance numbers would not exist.

When will Democrats learn that Republicans are utter lying slimeballs and not trust them on anything? I'm sick of these 'Democrats lost because they believed Republicans' stories.

Remember when Congressional Republicans held committee meetings in secret, locked rooms without telling Democratic members when and where they'd be? That is who they are.

See — now this is what I’d like to see a heck of a lot more of — from both tribes — calling out your supposed side when you think it’s wrong. Well done.

ANY legislature. ANY government. The only place I haven't heard of this happening is on the Supreme Court, because there they can just be openly corrupt, and not need to lie to the other justices, only in their rulings. But I've little doubt if they DID face where deceiving the more liberal justices would benefit them, they might. Hell, what was Bush v. Gore but an utterly dishonest theft of the election?

Always love the false equivalency from 'centrists', it's like clockwork. I'm sure glad to see Bill Cosby admit he raped those women, now I'd just like to see them admit they raped him, too.

At least we’ve always voted for our candidates since I first voted for McGovern, as ALL Republicans ALWAYS do for theirs.

Unlike the several factions of the left who’ve been MIA all decade. I’m seeing several new BROS factions from the left. You?

I can't tell what you're talking about, but I'm nearly always against anyone who uses 'bros' in their argument.

What would strike you as a rational reaction to this kind of politics?

Ooo - that's a toughie...

Withdrawing support from both criminal gangs?
