Trump plans ban on sale of flavoured e-cigarettes - BBC News

Mr Trump told reporters vaping was a "new problem", especially for children.US Health Secretary Alex Azar said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would finalise a plan to take all non-tobacco flavours off the market.
There have been six deaths across 33 states and 450 reported cases of lung illness tied to vaping.
Many of the 450 reported cases are young people, with an average age of 19.
Michigan this month became the first US state to ban flavoured e-cigarettes.

There's nothing a federal ban can't solve

Sensible. Vapes kill 5 people, ban them.

Guns kill millions, SELL MORE!

The death of one is a tragedy.

Nevermind 480,000 yearly deaths from burned tobacco....

Yet another idiotic overreaction that will make things worse, not better. Vaping isn't killing anyone. A contaminent in a tiny tiny tiny subset of total vape products is, and thus far only 6. 6 total vs. 480,000/yr.

Naturally, the American reaction (whether D or R) is "ban them all!" We have no concept of scale.

We have a concept of it with guns though. We don't ban those - and we shouldn't. This authoritarian idiocy has to end. We need to sew up this division and make some amendments to the constitution so some of these issues are not endlessly decided by the SCOTUS.

In the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, this is a move I can support. Though I’ll be curious to see if the libertarians and “keep the gub’mint out of my personal business” conservatives that are enamored with Trump support it.

I think it’s a good idea.

I’m sick of the cynical advertising from Jewel Labs that positions their nicotine delivery system as smoking addiction cure.

Just as I’m sick of watching these guys blatantly market to high school kids with flavors, and wrap themselves in lab coats when they are just a subsidiary of Phillip Morris!

IF we had done something about the cynical marketing of opioids when there were still this few deaths and reactions, we’d be a lot better off now!

Dems...so triggered. I truly enjoy your pain...everyday:2wave:

You think it's a good idea to turn all the people who quite smoking cigarettes back to smoking cigarettes, and you want to turn people who started with vaping and turn them to cigarettes for their nicotine fix?

It's a terrible idea. Exactly the sort of terrible idea we always embrace to make ourselves feel better so we can say we're "doing something" when what we're doing is actually make a bad situation worse. It'll start with flavored e-cigarettes and it'll cascade if it gets momentum. And then we'll be back to every nicotine user chasing lung cancer.

I am in favor of regulating who vaping companies are allowed to market to and age restrictions on who is allowed to buy, and I'm even ok with regulating where vaping oils are allowed to be sold, within reason. Outright banning is going too far. If an otherwise law abiding adult of sound mind wants to smoke flavored oils, that is his or her risk to take.

With all due respect (and I mean that sincerely, as I usually very much enjoy your posts on here) - I think you’re overacting.

This isn’t banning vaping or going to make people who quit smoking go back to smoking. It’s merely a ban on the flavored vapes which are an unsubtle attempt by a predatory industry to get kids hooked.

Naturally, I’d want to see the complete details of the plan before I signed on completely, but in theory, I really don’t have a big problem with this proposal.

Vapes don't kill people, people kill people.

It's the beginning. And plenty of other people ARE talking about banning vaping in general. This has been gaining momentum for some time.

And why shouldn't adults be allowed to use flavored products? Why does the fact that some shops illegally sell to minors mean nobody gets to have it? Why not just focus on enforcement against shops and against any companies violating any laws in order to try to encourage sales to minors?

We always attack things with sledgehammers. Like the opioid crisis. We now have a fast-rising number of doctors who will not prescribe or prescibe less out of fear that the government will wrongly target them as a pill mill doc. The end result is increasing of numbers in horrible chronic pain being made to simply suffer, and that's all in the name of fighting the opioid crisis.

Yet what was the problem? It wasn't opioids generally. It was doctors who weren't careful enough, pill mill doctors, and pharma companies (Perdue in particular, no?) who hid evidence and tried to pass these off as perfectly safe. As with vaping, the answer isn't just take stuff away from everyone. It's focus on the bad actors that caused the problem in the first place

Because it is very clearly an attempt to get kids to use them. It also encourages non-smokers to use them who may otherwise not have. It is predatory marketing aimed towards kids and non-smokers. Also getting rid of favors may help discourage further use by current users. Many places are looking to ban menthols for similar reasons.

GOP prior to 2017 looks alot different from this big government overreach party.

Careful - you’re starting to sound like the “slippery slope” arguments against gun control (obviously a completely different topic, but the logic is similarly false IMO).

These are much better arguments against the proposal IMO. And admittedly I come into this discussion with a prevailing anti-anything that the tobacco/smoking/vaping industry does predisposition. So while I’m personally in favor of it, I can totally understand the arguments against it.

Anyway, I still think the funniest part of this is that it was proposed by a supposed “Conservative” (who we all know is really only playing one on TV) and it will be lauded by conservatives and libertarians alike.

What about flavored alcohol?

I smoke cigars mainly, but on occasion I use a pipe vape and I like having flavors why shouldn't I be able to purchase and use what I choose?

Ask the vape companies why they feel the need to market to children and non-smokers.
