Number of Americans without health insurance rises for 1st time in a decade

The Census Bureau also said household income rose last year at its slowest pace in four years.

That wonderful 2017 GOP proposal in which 24 million Americans would have lost healthcare coverage.

9/10/19
WASHINGTON — The number of Americans without health insurance edged up in 2018 — the first evidence from the government that coverage gains from President Barack Obama's health care plan might be eroding under President Donald Trump. The Census Bureau also said in an annual report Tuesday that household income rose last year at its slowest pace in four years and finally matched its previous peak set in 1999. The data suggest that the economic expansion, now the longest on record at more than 10 years, is still struggling to provide widespread benefits to the U.S. population. Solid gains in household incomes in the past four years have returned the median only to where it was two decades ago. Though income inequality narrowed last year, it remains near record levels reached in 2017. Last year, the richest 5% of the U.S. population captured 23% of household income. An estimated 27.5 million people, 8.5% of the population, went without health insurance in 2018. That was an increase of 1.9 million uninsured people, or 0.5 percentage point. More people were covered by Medicare, reflecting the aging of the baby boomers. But Medicaid coverage declined. The number of uninsured children also rose, and there were more uninsured adults ages 35-64.

The Census report is sure to play into 2020 presidential politics. Health care is the leading issue for Democrats, with proposals including Sen. Bernie Sanders' call for a government-run system to cover everyone and former Vice President Joe Biden's idea for expanding Obama's law and adding a government plan open to virtually anyone. Democrats are laying the blame Trump, long accusing his administration of deliberately undermining Obama's health care law. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday blamed Trump's "cruel health care sabotage" for the rising number of uninsured people. In a statement, the California Democrat said Trump's ongoing efforts to erode Obama's health law have forced Americans to "live in constant fear of an accident or injury that could spell financial ruin for their families." Trump spent most of his first year in office unsuccessfully trying to get a Republican Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act. He is now asking a federal appeals court to overturn it as unconstitutional. The president also slashed the program's sign-up season ad budget and scaled back funding to help people navigate the enrollment process. Trump also removed a subsidy for insurers, thereby triggering a jump in premiums.

Trump told us in early June that the White House would roll out a new healthcare plan in a few weeks. Well, this is September. Where is it?

Trump has done everything possible to roll back the healthcare coverage gains made under the Affordable Care Act.

It’s pretty sad how little the GOP cares about health care.

I bet we will see posts cheering on the falling coverage rate in this thread before long.

It's a sad statistic but a real one. The U.S. spends twice the amount of other countries on health care but with worse results. The U.S. spends about twice what other high-income nations do on health care but has the lowest life expectancy and the highest infant mortality rates, according to a report by Reuters last year.

With all that's happening in this administration, our health care system needs overhauling and I'm still waiting for the republicans to come up with an alternative plan to the Affordable Care Act without making us pay for it through Medicare and Social Security cuts.

Given CNN's really impressive track record for putting out the most fake news, and their dedicated effort to destroy business and consumer confidence and crash the economy, I'll go with this account:

Rich people in Big Health Care did - that's why they wrote the ACA for flunkies like Obama to pimp.

Those numbers are baloney and include some of the highest earners and lowest earners throughout the country.

Moreover its irrelevant. You can make 100 k a year and still be financially ruined for having the audacity to get sick with cancer.

I'm sick and tired of this debate. Let the goddamned republicans deatroy healthcare so their voters see how much their choices destroy their lives.

100 percent this. The aca is and always was a trash bill

Hopefully it will be replaced by single payer if we can vote enough cultists out.

More proof that you don't even bother to read articles. You just soldier on.

The two articles in the OP are from NBCNews and USA Today. Not CNN.

Those stats were actually due to the ACA. People were unable to use the ACA insurance because deductibles were too high to get help. And, many of those young people that were forced to pay for it or for things they didn't need are the ones dropping off the ACA. Good for them. They are now working and get insurance through their employer which will help them stay healthy since those deductibles are much lower. Leave my medicare and social security alone Democrats!!!

Would like a bit more detail when changing 20% of our economy than the campaign slogan "Single Payer". Details please.

Where is that wonderful White House healthcare bill Trump said would be rolling out in June 2019?

This is September. The last GOP Congressional stabs at healthcare (AHCA/BCRA) in 2017 would have removed healthcare coverage from 24 million Americans.

Talk about hot garbage! Thanks to the late Sen. McCain for deep-sixing that utter mess.

Agreed but that doesnt change the fact the aca was garbage.

Unfortunate. Ironically, our local free clinic announced recently it is closing due to lack of patients because of medicaid expansion gave them more options.

In both parties.

But don't hold your breath...

Understand that you are about partisan trivia. I asked for details. I agree we need to better our system. Just think there is more to fixing a problem which impacts $4 trillion per year than the term single payer.

I also want to make our system work better.

not a "fact"
while I agree it was not the answer its better than what we had and SMART HONEST nonpartisan politicians would simply keep working on improving it for the american people (just like ANY plan is going to need) but no we cant have nice things (if it was the other guys idea) in todays political climate

The entire argument is about insuring the poor, right? Most people with company plans are relatively happy. Subsidized health care should be administered by the welfare department. The welfare department is geared to help you get a better job. That is your solution. Get a job with benefits.
I find the lowest income people are true blue democrats who belong to a party the fights for increased immigration to keep wages down. Even the stupidest poverty pimp understands labor shortages force companies to train, offer higher wages, and get creative in attracting and retaining employees. The best medical plan wont cure stupid.

We have a medical structure problem that lags in providing expensive benefits to people who aren’t paying for them. Cut down on letting people in to steal your job, and vote for someone who will protect your wages.
