Explainer: What tools could Trump use to get U.S. firms to quit China? - Reuters
Trump does have certain ways of forcing Companies to stop doing business with China as can be seen in the article above. Using tariffs is one thing, but declaring a natinal emergency, cutting off companies who disobey his order from doing business with the Fed or using a 100 year old war act to stop the companies from doing business with China seems highly unlikely. I wonder if even the GOP would allow Trump to use any but additional tariffs? What do you think?

I thought we were all opposed like to "socialism" and such.

So long as Trump says/does it then it is Trumpism, not socialism. So all good, bro!

I think trump has enough left in his tool bag that he doesn't need to resort to declaring a national emergency or applying other laws...yet...but it's nice to know that he can take that step if the need arises.

One thing is for certain...he has given US companies ample warning about his intentions through rhetoric and actions. If they continue to do business with China and get kicked in the teeth, they only have themselves to blame.

Well, so much for big federal government not interfering in free trade and the free market...

When talking about the actions of China, there is no "free trade" and "free market". That is what Trump is changing.

Why not let private industry decide that?

You're right, he is changing free trade and the free market by taxing American companies.

It’s interesting that the party of free trade, free markets, small government, and fiscal responsibility, is now fighting so enthusiastically to destroy all those things.

Why not let private industry decide that?

Because China won't let them decide. They want to call the shots. That is what Trump is changing.

All those American companies have to do to avoid those "taxes" is to move out of China.

They can choose not to do business with China. If you have a bad customer, you can refuse service.

I bet you still think “trade wars are good and easy to win” and healthcare is not that complicated.:lamo

Up till now it's been more beneficial to those US companies to do business with China, even with the restrictions. But those restrictions stifle free trade and harm other American businesses and American workers.

So tell me...would you rather US multinationals continue to make piles of money while Americans suffer? Or would you rather those US multinationals move out of China, still make piles of money...and Americans benefit?

Trump chooses the latter and, as President, he is doing everything he can to benefit Americans. The multinationals can make their own choices.

I'm surprised that you, as a liberal, care more about the plight of giant multinational corporations than about small, medium and large US businesses or American workers.

US farmers are “multinationals” now?

Nope. We all know that both of those are difficult, considering the massive opposition both abroad and at home to both, but that's not going to stop Trump from working to deal with them. The American people deserve his efforts.

You voted for someone who thought they were both easy to solve and the only reason no one did it before was because liberals are stupid.

You still think that?

Some US farmers are giant multinational corporations.

They are all getting hurt. Badly.

Still think “trade wars are good and easy to win”, and liberals didn’t do it because they are just weak and stupid and hate everyday Americans?

It’s interesting that the party of free trade, free markets, small government, and fiscal responsibility, is now fighting so enthusiastically to destroy all those things.

So why isn't the party which has been skeptical of free trade, free markets, small governments and fiscal responsibility supportive of Trump?

So why isn't the party which has been skeptical of free trade, free markets, small governments and fiscal responsibility supportive of Trump?

Because they are not skeptical of all free trade and free markets or fiscal responsibility.

But that party is not the one who has been saying the free market is mankind’s salvation and the magic answer to everything.

“I am not for big government. I am not for small government. I am for smart government.”
-Barack Obama

Or...they could just wait another year for Trump to leave office and pass on the taxes to the consumer in the interim.

Which do you think they'll do?

I think Trump was misled and didn't realize the amount of opposition he would be facing. He's since found out. He knows the difficulty. But that won't stop him from doing his work.

Trump has said that ALL of the previous politicians were stupid when it comes to China and world trade. He didn't just single out liberals.

And yes...I'll still vote for him. Not only do I agree with his goals, the alternative is unacceptable.

Which do you think they'll do?

If they pass on the taxes to the consumers, they'll lose money. The consumers will chose other, cheaper products.

If they want to bet on whether Trump wins next year or not, that's their choice.

What do I think they'll do? Depends. The smart ones will abandon China. The stupid ones will stay. Darwin's law will take effect.

I think that if Trump doesn’t reign in his inflammatory rhetoric towards China and shift away from a zero sum negotiation strategy to a win-win one, both economies will continue to suffer, but China will win because Xi has all the time in the world and no voters to appease.

As for additional measures Trump might take, I don’t see a win there either. Lawsuits blocking or at least delaying would ensue and again, won’t move China.

If Trump was smart he’d work towards building a coalition of allied countries to take on China, increasing pain on Xi while spreading out (lessening) burdens on individual allied countries.
