Trump threatens to lift tariffs on Chinese goods to 30% amid escalating trade war

President Donald Trump on Friday counterpunched against retaliatory tariffs announced by Beijing earlier in the day, pledging to hike the rates importers must pay on Chinese-made goods even higher.

Trump said the US will raise tariffs from 25% to 30% on $250 billion in goods that are already being taxed starting October 1.

....

Oh goody. That will bring China to heel.

This is getting actually scary.

How much more of this will Republicans let him do before they agree to impeachment or say it's time to trigger the 25th Amendment?

Scary how? Are you an investor?

I'll repeat. We need to deal with China now, or we never will.

If you are concerned about the economy because of Trump's actions against China, then you have just confirmed how powerfully pervasive Chinese industry is in our economy, and how dependent we are becoming.

If THAT doesn't concern you, then IMO it should. So blame it on Trump if you will. But his actions are only showing up the problem we are dealing with, and should deal with while we have someone with the will to do so.

What are you so 'scared' of? If anything should scare you its the idea that Trump should be impeached or removed over this. Thats insane. China is the threat in this instance, not Trump. You need to get your priorities aligned with reality.

I think most of us are concerned because Trump has no plan and no idea how to get out of the hole he is digging.
Every expert on Chinese culture will tell you bring to force them to do something with this type of tacit is going to fail.

And if I shoot myself in the face and need a trach tube to breathe, that shows I was too dependent upon breathing through my mouth.

No, tossing multiple hand grenades into the global economy and bringing us to the edge of recession doesn't prove anything about our relationship with China.

But Trump thanks you for pretending that the indiscriminate damage that he is doing makes any kind of sense.

So when all the corporations move their manufacturing to Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Djibouti, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Nigeria, or any of a hundred other third world sweatshop havens, will that help us any? Because if you think Trump's trade war with China is going to either correct the trade imbalance or bring manufacturing back to the USA in droves, you are partaking in delusional thinking.
Any tiny bit of manufacturing that did come back here will be highly automated, or even completely so, and it is doubtful that more than a thimbleful will anyway, given the choices overseas.

Oh wait, almost forgot Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador!

Scary? How?

It's better to take on the ChiComs now while we still have a prez that will.

I'm celebrating. :2party: It's Friday night, the family is getting together for some BBQ'ed steaks, beer is cold, weather is unbelievable, life is good. :rock

It is PRECISELY because he has no plan, just screeching, yelling and tweeting. Just BLUSTER.
I am on board with pressuring China to act proper.
I am not on board with entrusting the plans to a deranged idiot from reality TV.

What you have confirmed is trump has not ability to negotiate squat. When the economy tanks the blame fall on trump and the Repubs head, the Democrats thank you

He is so screwed for November 2020.

This has freaked the majority of the nation out to the core, as they watch the 'Master Negotiator' prove he knows nothing about economics, and gets closer and closer to doing serious damage to the markets.

That 56% that routinely disapproves of him is ready to vote him out right now. It won't matter if it's Biden or Warren, they're ready for any mentally stable adult to take the wheel, and end this dangerous tyranny that Trump practices.

I know the election is over a year out, but it's hard to see Trump surviving this mess.

Stocks are back down to Christmas 2017 levels. That Trump economy is Huuuge!

Stock prices are not "the economy" any more than soybean or Big Mac prices are. You should be happy because Trump is raising federal taxes instead of cutting them.

Here's something we need to realize.
Remember how it became clear how long range and short range strategically capable the Russians were in the last election by setting off each side against each other over here? All they needed was to provide an excuse.
Red China is no less capable than Russia.
Red China certainly knows what to do and the reaction to expect from the media, big business, and common folk (like here on DP) against Trump in order to get him to capitulate on trade.
I expect so far they would be pleased.
Looks like they had those groups sussed ... Trump might be a different animal though.

Do you have any idea what Biden's or Warren's poisitions on trade with China are? If so, how do they significantly differ from those of Trump?

Xi is playing the long game, strategically. Trump is in way over his head, and too stupid/stubborn to accept advice from actual experts. If he continues playing tough guy it won’t end well.

^^ That.

If Trump had combined his determination with competent strategy, he could have accomplished a lot with China.

But he didn't do that. And China knows what Trump is afraid of -- Christmas shoppers facing high prices and losing farmer votes.

You can always use Google instead of baiting.

Who's dealing with who? D'ya think maybe China will teach the US to not upset the apple cart?

Trump is determined to make this as big of a mess as possible, and China can do more to their own to win this while all Trump can do is complain and start a Twitter tirade about the Fed.

Sanders has it right when he says the solution to the outsourcing of jobs to the Chinese is to move to cut federal contracts and subsidies to the corporations that do so. This idea of getting into a tit for tat trade war will never work, as China can always match our tariff, and then tolerate the economic pain longer than we can.

Xi understands that Trump is afraid of the economy vomiting up some of it's lunch because of the trade war and hurting his reelection chances, so they are holding his feet to the fire in a war that he never should have started in the first place. China can tolerate this pain for two years, no problemo. That the idiot we have the WH doesn't understand this, speaks volumes about his intelligence.
