Whoops maybe not!!

Federal arrests of noncitizens have jumped over 200% in the last 20 years and now account for 64% of those arrested, according to the Justice Department.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics said that federal arrests of non-Americans rose 234% from 1998-2018. For U.S. citizens, the percentage rose just 10% over those 20 years.

The newly released statistics feed the Trump administration’s narrative that an increase in immigration, especially illegal immigration, has fed a spike in crime.

Justice: 64% of federal arrests are noncitizens, with a 200% increase

But...but...but... immigrants commit less crime than American-born citizens, right?

Fake news. A hoax. Do you really believe sixty four percent of federal arrests are noncitizens? I don't.

Immigration expert Jessica M. Vaughan said the increase in arrests is due to increasing prosecution of illegal entry and re-entry by migrants.*

They are probably counting those detained for being here illegally in those numbers.

The Bureau of Justicr Statistics says so. That doesn't make it so, but why would they make up stuff that's easy enough to check? I suggest you check. Me? I can believe it, but that doesn't mean it's true. I just don't care enough to check. Those I care about aren't likely to be arrested. The rest of you, who ever you are, are on your own.

If you count them being arrested for simply being here, maybe.

Hmm... who, other than the federal government, can make an arrest based on immigration status? BTW, an arrest is not proof of any criminal involvement.

No maybe about it - that is federal law.

Crossing the border illegally is a misdemeanor and yet many make it sound like these folks are nothing but drug dealers and murderers.

Found the full report in case anyone is interested:

The fve crime types for which non-U.S. citizens were
most likely to be prosecuted in U.S. district court
in 2018 were illegal reentry (72% of prosecutions),
drugs (13%), fraud (4.5%), alien smuggling (4%), and
misuse of visas (2%)

Based on the numbers it appears because we have been steadily increasing our prosecutions of illegal re-entry attempts. It makes sense the more we crack down on immigration at the border the higher the crime rates of non-citizens will be.

The shrug wasnt disbelieve the shrug was because the arrests are for illegal crossing and not violent crimes. Color me unconcerned.

Yes, the majority are illegal crossing with drugs a distant second and violent crime even smaller. It's not really the narrative I think they are trying for.

And the second time someone crosses illegally?

Look, they're not all rapists and drug dealers and gang members, but neither are they all "sparks of divinity" looking to be upstanding residents who support themselves and never game or suck off our system.

Uh ... not sure your point.

The implication the average reader will take is that this stat shows that immigrants are a menace that we have reason to fear more than any other stranger on the street.

If it's arrests for simply being here which are driving up the arrest rate then no spike in crime -- just a spike in arrests for a person simply existing in the wrong country -- and no call for fearmongering.

Driving without a license/insurance is a misdemeanor too but many think that all drivers should be licensed/insured and those violating that law should face legal consequences.

Where are you getting this information that the majority of illegally crossing with drugs? Also only something like 30% of the country approve of the way Trump and Republicans are handling immigration. Soon it will be our turn.

I meant - the majority of offenses are illegal crossings, re-entry, with the second offense of drugs being a distant second. I should have worded that sentence better.

See post #17. Misdemeanors are crimes too and most favor enforcement of all laws. I doubt that many are called fear-mongers for not wanting unlicensed drivers sharing our roadways, but it is illegal none the less.

But using increased arrests of people who are living here peacefully should not be used to feed a narrative that there is a spike in any kind of crime, much less in the kind that Trump is trying to gin up fear about.

Increasing enforcement versus pushing a false narrative about reasons to live in fear .... one doesn't have to rubberstamp the latter to support the former.

I agree, but it is not reasonable to oppose increased law enforcement simply because some moron, currently in office, is spewing rhetorical nonsense.

The "Diversity is our strength" mantra is a misnomer to begin with. Now, before you all string me up, hear me out. The citizens of this great country come from all over the world. That, is true. Our races, ethnicity, religions etc, are quite diverse indeed. BUT, that in itself, isn't what made us the most successful, powerful country in the world. Our love for our way of life, our fellow citizens, and belief in our constitution, our ability to come together as ONE, THAT, is what makes this the greatest country on earth. The ideal, the "melting pot", where the many, are blended together into one. The black, white, brown, yellow, red, christian, muslim, atheist, jew, buddhist, European, African, Asian, gay, straight, trans, and all the rest go into the pot, face trial by fire, and come out Americans all. Do all our differences disappear? Not at all. But I learned in the Marine corps, how strong we felt, united, together. It may seem like an oversimplification, but we were brothers. We had our problems. Sure we would bicker, fight amongst ourselves. Sometimes we got carried away and called each other ugly names. But let me say this, we'd better not hear somebody else call our brother a name. I can remember the pride, and love I felt for my brother marines and their families when we were in a town in some foreign land. I felt like nobody, nothing, could defeat us. We can't loose that. We MUST overcome our differences, and join together as one, and we will power through any foe, foreign or domestic. I know I'm leaving the door wide open for some partisan digs here, but try to rise above it, please. Just this once.

At first glance I thought this thread was about the Republican party. They have been taking all the outcasts of the Democrats, so there is ton of diversity these days.

Perhaps you should go move to a place more monolithic then?
