“My life would be a lot easier if I hadn’t taken China on. But I like doing it because I have to do it,” he said, maintaining that the stock market could be 10,000 points higher if he hadn’t.

Trump admits his trade war could lead to recession but says ‘I have to do it’

Yes, the market would likely have been 10,000 points higher if he hadn't taken China on. Trump actually got something correct. The market also could very well have been 10,000 points higher if he had taken China on in a sane way. No, he did not have to take on China in such a destructive way, which still shows no light at the end of the tunnel. No, we did not have be to teetering on the edge of recession. No, he didn't need to push hundreds of farmers over the edge when they were already straining to keep their farms.

Trump "likes" doing it because he likes to break things and then take credit for "fixing" them. He told us in advance that he was fine with crashing economies because then people would be desperate and he could make deals. He really doesn't care how much pain he causes -- how much we regress before he declares that he "won" -- he just likes to break things and get attention. Like a two-year-old.

Biased opinion piece.

The arsonist fireman has always been this way. Nobody makes money on a Trump deal except Trump. He takes the cream of the top and lets the rest sour. He risks little or nothing of his own. Without his nether deals with Deutsche Bank, he couldn't get a $300 line of credit. Some day, we'll see the black on with truth of his finances and real wealth and know what a fake, which he has always projected onto others, he is.

As beefheart likes to say.....Trump is non compos mentis.

It's a direct quote from Trump himself admitting his stupid Trade war is bad.

So you are saying the "opinion piece" from the O/P is not biased? He's making a guess based on a Trump comment...
Maybe instead of saying he is biased, we'll just say the author is speculating.

Stocks are up 29% under the Trump presidency...
Trump said, If the trade war is successfully resolved, the Dow could rise to 30,000 points.

Where did he admit his "stupid trade war" is bad? He didn't.
He said the stock market would likely be higher if he didn't take on China's theft of our intellectual property and trade deals but he feels it was time that a president took this problem on.

I'll wait for your concession.

Biased, and correct.

I've changed my mind and I'll leave out the biased and incorrect part.
The author is merely speculating based on a Trump comment from yesterday. He's hypothesizing.

There is no way of telling if the author's speculations would be correct.

Trump never said the above.

Here's what he said,

“Somebody had to take China on,” Trump told reporters during a White House visit by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, when asked about wide-ranging tariffs he has imposed on imports from China. “This is something that had to be done. The only difference is I am doing it,” he said.

“China has been ripping this country off for 25 years, for longer than that and it’s about time whether it’s good for our country or bad for our country short term. Long term it’s imperative that somebody does this,” he said.

Trump, who is seeking re-election, again dismissed such fears, saying: “We’re far from recession.”

I can't get around the WaPo paywall. Can you proved the quote from the article in which Trump admits his trade war could lead to recession?

Thank you.

The author is playing loose with Trump's actual words.

The title of the WA Post article is misleading..."Trump admits his trade war could lead to recession but says ‘I have to do it’"

“I am doing this whether it’s good or bad for your statement about, ‘Oh, will we fall into a recession for two months?’ The fact is, somebody had to take China on,” Trump said.

“Whether it’s good for our country or bad for our country, short term, it had to be done,” he said, repeating that “whether it’s good or bad, short term, is irrelevant.”

“My life would be a lot easier if I hadn’t taken China on. But I like doing it because I have to do it,” he said, maintaining that the stock market could be 10,000 points higher if he hadn’t.

“Somebody had to take on what China was doing to the United States economically,” he said. “It should have been done by previous presidents.”

Donald Trump said:

"Trade wars are good and easy to win."

"Nobody knows more about trade than me."

“Nobody knows more about taxes than me, maybe in the history of the world.”

“Nobody’s ever been more successful than me.”

“I understand money better than anybody. I understand it far better than Hillary, and I’m way up on the economy when it comes to questions on the economy,”

"I think I know about the economy better than the Federal Reserve."

[FONT=Atiza, Georgia, serif]We should trust this guy. He has an undergraduate degree in economics from Wharton. He said that he graduated at the top of his class. (Unfortunately, he refuses to produce his academic records, and somehow he was not included among the people who graduated with honors.) No, matter.

He filed for bankruptcy 5 times and was going for 6 until billion dollars loans were underwritten from still unknown entities. Unfortunately, Donald Trump who promised to open his financial records, won't open his financial records.

None of this matters. Trump is quite obviously a genius, brilliant. He knows stuff. A lot.

Trust Donald Trump.

I know. I've read the entire transcript of the presser. I know what he said. I just wanted the OP to tell me what quotes the writer provided. Then I was going to show exactly what Trump said...in context.

But you essentially did that for me. Thank you.

My pleasure but you'll be waiting a very long before you get a straight answer from the O/P but I'd imagine you already know this. ;)

Paraphrasing a reporter’s question, Trump said, “Your statement about, ‘Oh, will we fall into a recession for two months?’ OK? The fact is somebody had to take China on.”

The whole world has complained about China's trade practices, intellectual property theft, and currency manipulation. Trump has been the only one in the world to have the balls to do something about it. Yes, it hurts short term but the left would have you believe it only hurts US consumers and no one else. China is getting stung pretty damn hard. Funny how the left claim they want American consumers to buy American and yet when Trump's trade wars force Americans to buy more American (and the higher prices that come with it), all of a sudden the left attack Trump for it.

You 'conveniently' forgot to mention during that interview, Trump also gazed towards the sky and declared " I am the "Chosen One." IOWs, the stable genius declared himself to be the Messiah, J.C.

People haven't been buying more American, they're just buying the Chinese products at higher prices. Because even with tariffs, Chinese manufacturing is still cheaper. I can understand the motivation to want a better trade deal. But we seem to have made zero progress towards achieving that.

Of course he did. You can deny it, but it doesn't change the fact Trump most definately declared himself to be the 'Chosen One.' It's your credibility on the line when you deny facts because they don't fit your personal narrative. Feed 'Trump/Chosen One into any search engine and watch if for yourself.

Let me ask you something.
What if, say perhaps, we continued this trade war until something gave way and American manufacturers started to consider bringing their factories back to our shores?
Do you think we would see a major drop in prices coupled with a flood of new jobs?
Because here is what I see:

1. American companies move more factories out of China and into (A) Vietnam, (B) Sri Lanka, (C) Bangladesh, (D) India, (E) Malaysia, (F) maybe possibly here to America but 90% of those domestic factories would be overwhelmingly automated.

2. Prices not only don't drop, they get higher and STAY HIGHER because those companies would do what they always have done re outsourcing:

(A) Take a nice tax cut because they justify the costs of moving their factories, and (B) simultaneously double dip by passing along those same costs to the consumer.

Now, I know that folks on the Right are fond of talking about free markets and how "enlightened self interest" will guide prices down and spur competition but I argue that self interest has never been enlightened, and can't be and never will be, because self interest is always superceded, usurped, negated, and otherwise bullied into submission by bullies and always has been because HUMAN NATURE isn't as noble as free market gurus wish it was.

No matter how free the libertarians insist they are, there is always someone with more money, more muscle and more guns who will drink your milkshake, eat your lunch and slap your girlfriend around while you take a quick smoke break out on the balcony so that you don't lose it all and get to keep a few scraps in the aftermath.

And there's your "libertarianism" in the cold light of day.
I got mine, screw you.

The keyword is "may" cause short-term pain; a couple of months.

What do you want him to say when asked?
He tells the truth, and people like yourself never will give him credit.

No pain, no gain.

I don't see the word "may" in that quote.
