Buying Greenland: Trump haters mock the idea, but China is paying attention

Lets face it....DonDon has finally lost it completely and the garbage is finally flowing from his addled brain to his idiot mouth completely unencumbered, unbridled and unhinged. If they don't enact the 25th Amendment now, they never will and of course they won't.

The locals don't exactly live large off of jobs in the coal mines. The US already enjoys the strategic advantages of Greenland. If Trump wants to exploit the mineral resources, he should negotiate for them openly. Not just unilaterally try to buy them.

No, the locals don't, but don't pretend the benefits of investments of the TVA, for example, haven't been beneficial for residents. Programs like that require large investments that private ennterprise will not contemplate for obvious reasons. Likewise, I seriously doubt the Greenlanders would object to modest improvements in their economic outlook, infrastructure, and protection from the predatory Chinese.

So why didn't your idiot-in-chief talk to te Prime Minister of Greenland?
How stupid do you have to be anyway to offer to buy a country?

Actually the US tried to do it twice before.

And buying and selling parts of countries used to be a fairly normal practice.

Granted it’s not going to happen here because most countries now recognize that the inhabitants of a land have at least a limited right to self determination and Denmark specifically recognizes the same in Greenland as a matter of law.

So we can’t buy Greenland though Greenland could certainly become part of the US if the Greenlanders, the Danish government and the US government all agreed to it.

I really can’t fault Trump’s intentions. There are some pretty obvious reasons to want Greenland. The question does indicate yet again that he lacks understanding of history and international relations and law etc but at least he asked someone who could give him a straight answer before announcing that he was tendering an offer on Twitter.

Nothing to see here. Trump thinks he can buy Greenland from the Denmarkians the same way he can buy an old lady's house to build a s****y golf course.

They’re called Danes. Not Denmarkians.

You’re welcome in advance.

Trump out in the sun for 40 minutes now. Somebody get him back inside before he nukes Denmark. Seriously, DonDon is finally gone entirely.

Trump:
"I am the chosen one" Looking up at the heavens no less.

Get the hell outta' here DonDon.

Again, its 25th Amendment time. Now or never.

We are talking about exploiting natural resources. Not government investment in infrastructure. As far as I know TVA was not a result of investments by the coal industry. Appalachia made a lot of rich people richer, yet it has remained one of the poorest regions in the country.

This raises the question:

What else is China trying to do with Greenland? Are they making bids on the natural resources? If that's the case, then it would be in the interest of the US to prevent that by making our own bid for the resources...and what better way than to completely take over all of Denmark's responsibilities and controls concerning Greenland and their resources.

With this consideration, the idea of Trump making such a deal with Denmark is a good thing.

China would gladly loan them more than they can pay to build a port or an airfield, then when they default turn it into a military base, putting their nuclear missile submarines in port.

This ain’t your grandfathers world anymore. The maps haven’t changed just the players.

Yes. And China has done this before in other countries.

We know Trump doesn't want this to happen. I wish we knew Denmark was smart enough to not let this happen.

No way would Congress ratify such a purchase. A simple phone call to Pelosi would have confirmed it, and he should have done at least that before opening his mouth.

You are probably right about Pelosi.

I've seen nothing from Pelosi to make me think she cares about the economic and national security of the US. In fact, she has taken steps to diminish our economic and national security.

Look at how she keeps avoiding putting the USMCA up for a vote. Look at how she keeps blocking efforts to deal with illegal immigration.

What is being mocked is:
- Trump saying he is considering it
- Trump saying its not on the front burner
- Trump saying we are just looking at it
- Trump canceling a trip to Denmark to meet with a NATO ally BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN HIS BUY GREENLAND GIBBERISH

Cuckoo, Cuckoo, Cuckoo. Trump's mind is gone.

Also Danish PM was entirely within her rights to say it was an "ABSURD IDEA"[to them].

The world does not revolve around you Bozo the President. Denmark clearly does not want to entertain your whacko diversions and they don't want to encourage whacko notions from other nations.

Well, he has sure trolled the crap out of the TDS’ers. Now people are talking about it and the national security implications. He’s has used the left to bring Greenland to national attention.

Where are the global warming weenies warning and worrying about Trump and it’s USA ilk melting Greenland?

I guess the Danish PM didn't consider China owning an airport in a NATO country next to a US military base an "absurd idea".

So government exploitation is different from private exploitation?

I'm going out to exploit my garden for a bit now. I'll focus on exploiting the tomatoes. I stagger the planting times so I can exploit them suckers all summer long. Evil me.

Really, there is no reason to even go that far, where are we going to borrow the money for a purchase of this magnitude? From the other country that would love to own the land?
Another episode of ready, shoot, aim with this administration.

Say that Trump is literally Hitler and that everything he proposes is because he's a Nazi!

SAY IT!!!!

:2mad:

Why?
Do you feel foolish doing it all by yourself, in like every thread, so you need others to post the equivalent of throwing their **** too?

From a practical standpoint to buy Greenland would take perhaps 1 trillion dollars, along with $1 million for each resident of Greenland. Denmark would have a massive influx of cash which could provide a $50 billion dollar boost to government coffers every year if they just save it. Each resident of Greenland would have $1 million to move or to stay as new USA residents. That amount of money could be raised easily by the US.

Note I expect the main reason Trump wants to buy Greenland is to make the US the biggest nation on earth (not sure if Greenland would do that ) and have his name attached to that in the history books

TVA was started in the 30's. It used a system of dams to control flooding in East Tennessee and provide much needed electric power. It brought us stability and economic growth. It has never been exploitative. Your conflating it with exploitation of coal by private industry is ridiculous and dishonest.

Except you have no clue if Denmark would have accepted China's terms for the loan. You are entirely assuming that Mattis swooped in to save the day and convinced Denmark to self fund which they apparently did, meaning they already had the money to fund the project and were just looking for somebody else to fund it.

NICE TRY!

PS...what are the strategic consequences of the amount of business we do with China before we start throwing stones from our glass house.

There are plenty of good reasons to buy Greenland....all good reasons for Denmark being unwilling to sell TO ANYBODY!
