Bulletproof backpacks have become another back-to-school staple

Bulletproof backpacks have become another back-to-school staple

Crayons, glue, pencils, bullet-resistant backpack.

For some parents, that’s what a back-to-school shopping list looks like this year.
Guard Dog Security’s ProShield Scout backpacks are stocked for back-to-school season at Office Max and Office Depot stores and on the retailers’ website. Signs on the display say, “protection in session” and “bullet resistant backpack.” The office supply stores are not alone. Homedepot.com and other retailers also sell the brand.

“The backpack has been a popular item,” Yasir Sheikh, president and founder of Skyline USA, the company that makes Guard Dog Security products, said in an interview. “We have sold out a few times this year.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did anyone ever believe that bulletproof packpacks would be a hot seller for kids returning to school? In my day, all we had to worry about was a nuclear explosion which would vaporized us. I think that's more preferable to worrying about a man coming down the hall of a grammar school with a semi-automatic weapon firing as he walks.

Fifty years ago, civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer spoke before the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, and her speech became one of the most pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement. The big takeaway from her speech are words that still resonate more than 55 years ago. "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired."

The same can be said about gun legislation. People have just about reached a breaking point waiting for Congress to enact gun legislation that's not merely a panacea to shut up activists, this country needs meaningful legislation like red flag laws and a national assault rifle ban.

Today, Trump is walking back his promise to get enhanced background checks made into law. defend current US gun control measures, stating "we do have a lot of background checks right now." Trump will pivot and pledge to build mental hospitals to put all those crazy white terrorists in institutions probably run by friends of his like John Kelly who has been profiting from running the detention center in Homestead, Florida. This is a big joke on the American people. Trump is completely controlled by the NRA as are many other republicans in Congress.

Here's a guy testing out the ability of a child's backpack to stop a bullet from a handgun at close range.

1. Red flag laws already exist.

2. We already had an "assault weapons ban" which didnt do anything so it was allowed to expire.

I don’t think the fact parents are being sold on the need for “bullet resistant” backpacks is a commentary on gun control as much as a commentary on capitalism and the power of emotional marketing. :(

I am tired of your constant whining about my 2nd Amendment rights. So we are both sick and tired. How ironic.

You want to change the Constitution then convince the people to do it. Until then expect every end run you try to be blocked. No mas. No more compromise.

1. Red flag laws already exist.

2. We already had an "assault weapons ban" which didnt do anything so it was allowed to expire.

The national assault weapons ban expired, that needs to be resurrected in every state in the country and never allowed to be repealed or have an expiration date like the last one.

Just 14 states have red flag laws, fourteen -- not 50. Neither Texas or Ohio have red flag laws. As a matter of fact, just days ago, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine proposed a red flag law for the state of Ohio and it was overwhelmingly supported in the GOP Ohio Senate and nearly totally opposed in the GOP Ohio House.

A more effective policy would require every buyer, of any age, to obtain a license that includes a registration of all purchases and at least a modest training program. Every person who drives a car has to have a license and drivers education, we should expect the same for anyone wanting to buy a firearm. There should be legislation passed for gun-violence restraining orders. Such a law would allow family members or law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily bar an at-risk person from buying firearms. Police should also be permitted to confiscate their guns. Guns could also be made with fingerprint recognition just like a lot of cellphones have.

There's many ways that gun violence can be addressed but people always give up and say 'oh there's nothing anyone can do about it'. Well, they're wrong.

I'm sick and tired of you having to listen to our 'whining' about your ****ing 2nd Amendment right when our own people are being slaughtered by white terrorists, young men sick emotionally after lingering around hate-filled social media websites. I'm tired of your anger against people like me who are sick of your groaning the same old **** "my 2nd Amendment right!!". Bull****, when your rights trample on the rights of innocent people then I really don't give a **** about your guns.

Can we just call it fear mongering

I can't believe it's anything other than genuine fear that the parents of small children and those children themselves have. I have seen a 8 year old girl ask Corey Booker what he will do to make sure she doesn't get shot in her school. This isn't fear mongering, mass massacres have created the fear, nobody else. Of course capitalist companies will devise ways to cash in on those fears, but the fear is real.

People that are this fearful should home school their children.

I believe that little children should never be saddled with the fear of being ripped apart by a madman with an assault rifle. WE NEED STRICTER GUN LAWS, PERIOD

That's the most ridiculous argument ever made. You don't want this fixed and recommend that children be home schooled. It's mind-boggling how unrealistic and out of touch with reality that is.

Don't worry. Schumer is working on banning body armor.

My rights dont trample anybody else's rights. You just isist on taking them because of YOUR insecurities. Well too ****ing bad. I am not relinquishing my rights for you or your insecurity. I dont give a damn about YOUR safety. Thats YOUR problem. Learn to deal with it like the normal people have. So I guess we feel the same way. Again. How ironic.

You saw a child being used as a political prop.

The article is nothing but political propaganda designed to invoke an emotional response to ban guns.

They article does not mention how many of these packpacks have been sold. I bet more zombie apocalypse survial gear is sold than these ridiculous backpacks but im not gonna start worrying about that either.

Aren't you a big brave soldier with all your assault weapons. That makes you a real man, right?

When I was in high school our district banned any backpack that wasn't mesh or clear plastic as a result of a kid bringing in a toy gun that was mistaken for a real one. Maybe that policy should be revisited by more districts

No he (humblepi) is not saying that. He's tired of the Lapierre doctrine of gun policy! There are MANY free, capitalistic countries that have very strict gun legislation, some of them have existed longer than These United States. I'm reading a series of books on the Revolutionary War by Shaara that has been very educational on what it took for These United States to become THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA. The hardships all of the "rebels" and I mean anyone NOT sympathetic to King George and his knuckleheaded parliament went through to birth this NATION is almost unbelievable to someone living now.

BUT! To your point, the Second Amendment is about THE Founders, and MOST AMERICANS, of a Standing Army that they feared would put them right back into the chains of despotism they were/had fighting a war for their freedom from a despot. IF they were alive today they would think it crazy that so few have controlled gun policy. ESPECIALLY in light of the carnage we've been subjected to by maniacs using modern military weapons.

You won't believe it, but I respect the passion you put in the above post.
However, Heller, ever heard of it (?), pretty much makes it crystal clear that law abiding citizens have the unfettered protected right to defend themselves.

Long story short, the left is not going to get American's guns and here's why:

Things CAN change. Go back to 1934, when Constitutional gun legislation was passed.
