Stop politicizing EVERYTHING!!

What a thought provoking OP. Surely this opinion piece was critically important enough that you couldn't wait a few hours to write something about it.

Thanks, and to show I read the citation, here is a quote worth noting from it:

Not everything should be politicized. That’s not to say that there are no political ramifications for events. There definitely are, and we should explore all of them – civilly, without trying to inflame one another against our fellow Americans.

The distinction is important. That’s why I appreciated what Sonny Bunch wrote in The Washington Free Beacon. "Politics is important; political decisions have consequences; and passionately arguing for your preferred political outcomes is nothing to be ashamed of," he wrote. "A politicized life is a different beast, however. It treats politics as a zero-sum game or a form of total warfare in which the other side must be obliterated. It alters every aspect of your being: where you shop; what you watch on TV; what sort of music you listen to; who you associate with. If you're not with the politicized being, you're against him -- and if you're against him, he is well within his rights to ruin you personally and economically. You, the political other, are a leper to be shunned."

I've been arguing about this problem every time I mention the demonizing tactics of moral panic, or the propaganda efforts (repeat a few things over and over to create belief) of most media outlets.

This very Forum has become so divided that members who once agreed to disagree in a friendly way, now spend much of their time using ad hominin's and other fallacies to scapegoat and dismiss.

There is absolutely no room for compromise in this cycle of extremism. No respect, just agree or be labeled and damned.

Little wonder that we have a small number of outliers, the very fringes of society, being emboldened to act out their biases like those examples in Dayton and El Paso.

The question becomes, how to rein this in while still holding to ones principles?

It takes effort, and IMO the first step is one step back to self-evaluate, followed by a re-evaluation of ones foundational beliefs and the evidence used to support them. The next step is to come back to the discourse as dispassionately as one is able, and treat one's opponents with the same respect one demands for oneself.

Otherwise, we end up creating a society so divided by extremes we lose the drive to reach consensus and compromise, and when that option is gone only bad ones remain.

Politics, mass media, social media, a bevy of “news” harvesting apps and widely available media creation tools allow us to see the world the way we want to see it. We can also broadcast our view FAR beyond the confines of our neighborhood, our church and our town. We can validate our opinions in a million different ways and we can invalidate the opinions of others with equal ease. The result is that politics has become a function of personal entertainment. Politics is now all about us and we, if we choose, can be all about politics.

And you give us Townhall.com ..... a well known conservative rag.

Doc have this Sunday off?

I do believe you made the O/P's point.

and you are such a blind partisan that you cant even be bothered to read and understand what you are posting on-kinda making the point of the article.

Wait...you do this **** constantly...so it might not JUST be because you are a blind partisan and are the embodiment of what is written in the article.

Yep...and though I understand the intent of your image you probably should delete it before someone claims you are making a personal threat and not just demonstrating the "kill the messenger" theme.

Killjoy.

If the liberals go first, I'll follow.

Until then, their breath smells like dog poop.

He said he'll be back... what's the problem?

Oh wait, you wrote the above nonsense just to have something to say.

Back to the O/P... Assuming you have vocal friends and family IRL who oppose your politics, how do you handle the corrosive politicizing of almost every aspect of our culture?

Mark Jay Meckler is an American political activist and attorney. He was a co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots before resigning from that group in 2012. Meckler currently serves as President of Citizens for Self-Governance.

And?

You dismiss what he has to say because he isn't on your team...
Congrats, you too, helped to make the O/P's point.

So you ran out the door like a conservative?

One would think that just waiting a few hours to write out an actual post for your thread would be preferable to dropping a link without being around to discuss it. The only one here who's writing just to have something to say is Bullseye.

Then he should have waited to post his thread until then. But, I can see why he had no defense for such a garbage article.

I think you stick to your principles and speak your mind as thoughtfully as you can.

If people in your life can't deal with that, they shouldn't be in your life.

But here, we just beat the tar out of one another.

Silly ad hom.

It's a good article, and criticizes both "sides" equally.

Most ridiculous ad hom EVER?

It's a very good article.

You ask them to cut that part of their lives out of your interactions, and promise to do the same. I have some friends and family who strongly disagree with my politics; they keep it to themselves, I keep mine to myself. If you and your loved ones don't have the self control to accomplish that, just know that discipline is a learned trait. If your disagreement is harmful to an otherwise healthy relationship, you & yours need to put the time and energy into fixing the issue.
